Looks like the Worldometer predicitons may be proven correct!!!

Polkadotties · 17/07/2020 11:50

Can’t believe they are going to allow las gatherings in football stadiums but not allow more than 30 to a wedding. As long as the football yobs get what they want Hmm

Polkadotties · 17/07/2020 11:50

Mass gatherings, not las

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 17/07/2020 11:54

@whereistherum

I may have missed it, but was there anything said about public transport for non essential use?
www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-53441912

The prime minister said people may use public transport for journeys immediately, while advice for employers will change from 1 August.

We are in Wales and confused as it where we are for trains and buses here.

There are family and place in England we'd like to get to via public transport - so it is partly good news for us.

Meruem · 17/07/2020 11:55

What concerns me is it's all about the money now. While I appreciate the economy needs to get going again, the whole "go back to the office" thing is so people will buy lunch! Not because it's any safer. We seem to be lurching between various extremes and BJ hasn't got a clue!

Chaosreigns123 · 17/07/2020 11:56

So true. He makes alot of blunders. There was a great one a while back when he said 'virus'' instead of 'vaccine' so it was something like he hoped the virus would be rolled out to everyone...blah blah..and he suddenly realised what he said and corrected himself!

Haha I remember that one. Think he said they were hoping to create a virus 🤣

He's dreadful isn't he.

Wtf was he going on about bubbles with grandparents? That's only ever been a rule for single parents hasn't it?

None of it makes any sense. We clearly can't depend on this government.

I'm getting ready to hunker down for a long winter.

BabyLlamaZen · 17/07/2020 11:57

Anyone who waits until November will not be able to hug their families. They know that.

Ellie56 · 17/07/2020 11:57

It's like we don't actually have a prime minister. We don't have a prime minister Fizzy. We have a Prize Wanker.

LarkDescending · 17/07/2020 11:57

It’ll all be over by Christmas. Hurrah!

Boris is really phoning it in from a different planet, isn’t he.

Yellowbutterfly1 · 17/07/2020 11:58

And now an urgent review into Public Health England by Matt Hancock as he’s just realised numbers haven’t been at all accurate.

BabyLlamaZen · 17/07/2020 11:58

Yeah it's pretty obvious it's all economical. Like really obvious. That's why you have to make your own judgements.

MrsWarleggan · 17/07/2020 11:58

Has he seen the state of a train on footy day???! FFS.

LadyOfTheImprovisedBath · 17/07/2020 11:58

large gatherings in sports stadiums are planned from Autumn

I have to admit I don't why this is there - especially as it could impact on schools if there were spikes in local numbers.

That's probably as I have kids in school and one doing GCSE - I suppose I'd think differently if I was employed by such a place. Maybe job losses were just too big in the sector if they don't.

Justjoinedforthis · 17/07/2020 12:00

@Yellowbutterfly1I know this is so nuts - those figures have always been died WITH not necessarily OF. Has Hancock only just realised that? It's incredibly hard to pin down one cause of death in a lot of cases.

Chloemol · 17/07/2020 12:01

Can I suggest people either rewatch on iPlayer or wait until the speech is published via gov.uk so they can read facts in slow time and listen again to make sure the facts they are spouting are in fact right, then join the discussion

happypoobum · 17/07/2020 12:01

Total shitshow.

cologne4711 · 17/07/2020 12:02

the whole "go back to the office" thing is so people will buy lunch

Completely ridiculous. Yes - pay thousands of pounds for a season ticket to go into the office so you can buy lunch too.

Or spend money on petrol to get to work every day when many people have been managing absolutely fine at home. Those who haven't, can go back the office but I don't see how it's going to work with unreliable school attendance and no wrap-around care.

It will also increase air pollution which isn't great with a disease, which among other things, attacks the lungs.

Boris really is a twit.

The80sweregreat · 17/07/2020 12:03

I haven't heard today's briefing but it beggars belief to blame the office staff for wfh when they were told to do this and many have children too who could not go to school ! Just blame everyone else is the mantra!

cologne4711 · 17/07/2020 12:03

The prime minister said people may use public transport for journeys immediately

I could have done with this a week ago when I visited my mother and ended up having to drive because GWR were playing silly buggers about whether I'd be let on the train or not because I'd not pre-booked my journey.

labyrinthloafer · 17/07/2020 12:05

You can suggest it but it really is not a requirement Grin
TheHoneyBadger · 17/07/2020 12:06

So add grandparents to your bubble which could include a whole year group at school plus everyone your child encounters traveling to and from school? Err no don’t do that.

LondonJax · 17/07/2020 12:06

There's a woman on LBC radio at the moment who manages someone who has underlying health conditions. Her team member works in a call centre. She's worked perfectly well, from home, for the whole of lockdown. Her productivity is great. So the middle manager, the woman who called in, told her member of staff that she should continue working from home. The senior management though say that Boris says get back to work so it's everyone in. The woman on LBC has argued the point that the woman has underlying health conditions and does her job more than well from home as the first rule of risk assessment is eliminate the risk as much as possible - working from home is the minimum of risks. Nope, it's now company policy to get back into the office 'because they say so' so the middle manager and the worker are now facing a disciplinary if the woman with underlying health issues doesn't come inn. All to protect overpriced sandwich bars or whatever.

Surely it'd be better to say 'look, if you work from home, take a break from the PC at lunch time as you should, nip to the high street and buy a takeaway coffee. Support your local coffee shop'. My local coffee shop gets the cash instead of the one nearer my work that way. What's the difference?

As it is I will absolutely refuse to buy in a coffee shop or sandwich bar for the foreseeable future. I'm taking my own lunch and keeping my money in my pocket. It's my little 'you're not telling me how to spend my cash' rebellion.

The man's a fool. The chief scientific adviser says work from home. Johnson thinks the employer knows better than the medical people we've relied on all this time.

The fact that you are suggesting we need to do this shows how shite Johnson is. Policies should be clear and easy to communicate, not a mass of contradictions and muddle.

Exactly what I think.... so office workers buying sandwiches and coffees is more important than their health it would seem.

How is working in an open plan office with rows and rows of desks and people sat next to/opposite each other safe, yet masks in open shops will be mandatory?

BoJo jabbing his finger into the podium when making ridiculous points makes him look and sound even more ridiculous.

None of this makes sense.

But it nicely detracts from the lack of enquiry into the government handling of COVID.

Vallance is speaking before the Lords this afternoon. Suspect the chances of Boris being thrown under a bus are quite high now we’ve given up on even pretending to follow the science.
