So you're telling me that people like me who have been shielding have to enter into a world where everything is open once shielding officially ends on the 1st of August? Effectively throwing vulnerable people in the deep end for the sake of the economy?

Basically, I am afraid so.
crosseyedMary · 17/07/2020 12:57

The main obstacle to vaccine rollout is how long it takes to safely test
We have all been primed to be desperately awaiting a vaccine and to see this as the silver bullet solution
Boris has no real compassion for the well-being of the minions but he has to give the appearance of caring in order to get us back to work so that we can start generating profit
there are very powerful incentives for Boris to gaslight us into thinking that the vaccine is much safer than it is

Yep. Sad

Viviennemary · 17/07/2020 13:02

Waste of time.

KayEngel · 17/07/2020 13:02

@labyrinthloafer loving your attitude. I expect your the sort that wants masks & lockdown forever

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 17/07/2020 13:02

I'm actually sitting here in tears having seen the briefing.

I have been working from home since lockdown started

My productivity is 200% plus every day.

I can do my job from home and I'm doing it well

I have asthma, I'm obese and have long term health anxiety.

The thought of being told to come back to work in an office of 1500 people makes me feel like I should just end my life now.

What about unions? Will they step up here?!

BoxAndKnife · 17/07/2020 13:04

Effectively throwing vulnerable people in the deep end for the sake of the economy?

I see the usual suspects are all over this thread with their tedious Tory cheerleading.

The advice from Whitty and Vallance is in direct contradiction to Boris's announcements today. Are you ok with that?

crosseyedMary · 17/07/2020 13:05

People like me who have been shielding
You think that you have been shielding to keep yourself safe, the real purpose of your shielding is to protect wealthy landlords, make sure CEO still get their bonuses etc.

MarshmallowManiac · 17/07/2020 13:05

Total shitshow, putting the blame on employers Shock Mass gatherings and even stadia in the Autumn!! Well, what can you expect from Boris Angry

KayEngel · 17/07/2020 13:06

Some people have become so scared they are trapped. Shock Is anyone on here actually happy that Boris is hoping life can return to normal soon. Ffs what is wrong with hope.

crosseyedMary · 17/07/2020 13:07

Iremember
Many many people feel EXACTLY like you do, add your voice to theirs, there is strength in numbers!

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 17/07/2020 13:08

Iremember - if your office has 1500 people I think it's highly likely that not only will there be other staff similar to you, statistically, but also that you have in-house H&S staff and (hopefully) union representation too.

A responsible employer will undertake a risk assessment looking at all angles - H&S staff specialise in this! - and will issue guidance accordingly. This may take some time, so until then, try not to worry too much.

MrsWarleggan · 17/07/2020 13:09

Also very handy to say "back to the office" at the start of summer holiday's when schools are closed (understandably so for teachers) and they are not even open for keyworkers. Luckily my employer (local authority) pre empted this announcement and sent out an email to all staff saying "if its working, stick with it". I feel afraid for those with less understanding employers 😞

user1573957284738 · 17/07/2020 13:09

A lot of people seem to have become desensitised to the loss of life and trauma caused to those hospitalised etc etc, so I don't think there will be much robust pushback on what are transparently economic policies.

It makes me angry that they're pushing people to return to offices unnecessarily like this. All that shite about productivity and "not the same as face to face" (I thought the advice was to speak side to side...)...

If offices follow the "covid secure" guidance people won't be having meetings or face to face discussions or having conversations in corridors or any of the other tenuous "benefits" of being office based. So other than for people who genuinely need to be there what does it achieve?

labyrinthloafer · 17/07/2020 13:09
@labyrinthloafer loving your attitude. I expect your the sort that wants masks & lockdown forever
You know nothing about me.

I am talking about our shambles of a government.

Sorry, meant to say that I fully agree with the bolded quote and my question was the the cheerleaders who believe De Pfeffel cannot put a foot wrong.

Gawd, a glimpse of sunshine and my brain is melting today Grin

I missed it at 11..Why isn't there going to be a Coronavirus Show later?

Polkadotties · 17/07/2020 13:13

I want me life to get back to normal. I want my sister to have her planned wedding in October and get to go on her honeymoon after quite frankly a very nasty year for her, not Covid related.

I want my normal life back and I want to keep wfh. My productivity is up, my mental health is brilliant, I’m saving money on transport and spending it locally

crosseyedMary · 17/07/2020 13:13

Boris's attitude to the work from home policy will do him as much damage as his attitude towards Dominic Cummings
He's transparently self-serving and that's never a good look ☹️

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 17/07/2020 13:13

Unfortunately my employer is a government department, and therefore I think it will be a "lead by example" situation.

If it comes to it I'll just go off sick until there's a vaccine. Or they can sack me and I'll take them to tribunal. I am not going back into the office

crosseyedMary · 17/07/2020 13:14

Maybe there should be a thread for people who want to continue working from home and would like to collaborate on strategies to make this happen?

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 17/07/2020 13:15

@KayEngel

I think most people realise that Boris hoping that life can return to normal and the reality are not quite the same thing.
BoxAndKnife · 17/07/2020 13:16

Thankfully my company has no intention of getting people back into the office any time soon, if they are happy at home.

They also have a prime piece of central London real estate they've been planning to sell for years - this has given them the push to do so.
