Is anyone else sick of the mask brigade?

I am going to be wearing a face covering from the 24th.
However I’m getting sick of the constant steam of ‘shaming’ on social media especially.
The latest is a passive aggressive meme being shared which says ‘if you don’t like the mask, you definitely won’t like being intubated in the ICU’
I’ve just seen another one on a local page in the style of queen’s ‘we will rock you’. Basically “you’re a big disgrace, spreading your germs all over the place” blah blah blah.
I have anxiety and panic attacks and I am going to struggle wearing one, although I’m going to try my best. There are those who really won’t be able to for various reasons - asthma, copd, autism, other mental health issues and I bet they’re reading these posts feeling awful about themselves.

OP posts:

On MN there seems to be a huge contingent of people who are unable to wear masks (as I dont know them and it's an anonymous forum, then I have to assume these are all genuine and real reasons)
I'm interested if, in countries where mask wearing has been very common well before covid and they're cited as "just getting on with it", is there the same number of people who cant wear a mask and are therefore excluded from various places, or confined to their homes?

SockYarn · 19/07/2020 08:18

YANBU, OP. There are lots of people who can't wear a mask. They shouldn't be shamed by people who don;t have a clue and virtue signal by posting shite on social media.

"Wear a fucking mask" in the July version of the "stay in the fucking house" from March. The same people who were shrieking about "covidiots flocking to buy easter eggs" are the same people who are now shrieking about masks.

Fuckinellitsme · 19/07/2020 08:22

And for those that are exempt many of them will probably try visors

Visors are actually as bad or worse for many who are exempt.

Fuckinellitsme · 19/07/2020 08:24

@AdoreTheBeach

Stop being a selfish tw__ and wear the mask. Then these meme wing bother you.

Frankly I simply can’t comprehend people being so fu__ing ignorant not to wear them. This coming from someone who suffers anxiety and panic attacks. I had to practice wearing them before going out (Figure out which mask I could tolerate) and use self sitting methods to avoid hyperventilating. It can be fine if you WANT to wear a mask.

Wear the ducking mask. Care about your fellow human beings.

I'm not a selfish twat, fucking ignorant and uncaring of my fellow human beings, thanks.

I just have a medical condition which means I can't wear a mask.

SockYarn · 19/07/2020 08:26

I also think a lot of posters are missing the point - this isn't about wearing a mask, or not wearing a mask. The laws are clear and you should wear one in the shop or on public transport, unless you're exempt.

It's the sanctimonious preaching about it, the posting aggressive memes and pictures on social media for some weird reason. That's the problem. Unless you've been living in a cave we all know the rules already so what are you trying to achieve by haranguing people about it on social media?

Sockwomble · 19/07/2020 08:28

I don't think there is a huge number. Mask discussions will attract people with particular experiences. Most counties will have exceptions and exemptions although hostility from other people may force them indoors. Some countries have poor records with regards to disability rights with people being generally forced indoors or put in institutions so people with disabilities such as severe learning disabilities (350 000 in the UK) are rarely seen out.

worzelsnurzel123 · 19/07/2020 08:39

I’m in Scotland and in supermarket yesterday there were several people without masks, some within same family of varying ages- I suspect they perhaps decided not to wear them or had an exemption ( though hard to imagine the latter would be the case in one family). No one seemed bothered in the slightest and there were certainly no vigilantes screaming at them that they were killing people. What I DID notice was many with masks constantly touch their face nose, mouth, ears to adjust the mask, then touch shopping . There’s no social distancing amongst shoppers either. Masks only work if you socially distance too. In some ways they might be making things worse as they give the impression of safety when they aren’t effective alone without the other rules in place.

Stellakent · 19/07/2020 08:39

Sockyarn I agree. The social media thing is driving me mad. Just wear your mask and let me wear mine and shut up!

stayingaliveisawayoflife · 19/07/2020 08:49

If people are having trouble with glasses make sure your mask has a nose bridge. If not you can buy stick in ones pretty cheaply from Amazon. I also got an anti fogging cloth again from Amazon which is used by bikers. It's not perfect but it does work short term. It's also great for opening the oven and still being able to see!

OutwardBound2016 · 19/07/2020 08:59

@Sockyarn, yes absolutely but according to MN we must all troop off to the shops immediately and obediently walk around for hours with our mask on!

To the invincible unmasked brigade - genuine curiosity - if you or your love ones family, friends inadvertently got infected, would you still go against science and rules? You know the same ones that the globe outside of England seem to see more ideal to help save lives.

Still anti face coverings given this possibility?

Still anti face covering definitely. I won't break the law and will wear one. Not anti science, I've read a lot of research and none of it is remotely convincing that us wearing masks in shops specifically will further reduce the remote chance of transmission.

And if I, a relative or someone I know gets Covid, the chance of it being from an hourly weekly shopping trip is next to zero. We were all doing it when the bug was much more prevalent and we will continue to do so. Keeping mostly safe distance, not spending periods of time close to anyone and washing and sanitizing hands regularly.

HeIenaDove · 19/07/2020 15:32

hot and sweaty, the way you describe it, being overweight, doing lots of exercise close to bed time, thyroid disorders, the menopause being just some of them. Don't put up with it

I live in a flat on the top floor Its JULY. These flats get very hot. Unless..............everyone in these flats has the conditions you describe. Id also better tell my parents next door neighbours who were having a garden party last night till very late that they must be suffering from the conditions you describe.............oh and my 25 year old niece who i was also with last night and the supermarket workers i spoke to yesterday about the weather and the taxi driver too. I/we must all be suffering from the conditons you describe.

All these people must have one or more of those conditions.

You and the posters like you seem very keen on a race to the bottom . But arent very keen on emulating the good bits from other countries like the cooling face masks from Japan or free ones being given away at pharmacies like Italy. Only the shit bits. I wonder why!

sleepingpup · 19/07/2020 15:52

Its not the same as having a mask on that has cooler packs inside. That STAY cool Christ Almighty.

@HeIenaDove

Have you seen those little light bubble cool packs or those disposable cool packs? They could def be adapted onto masks. If it got to be really hot.

"necessity is the mother of invention " after all.

HeIenaDove · 19/07/2020 16:08

@sleepingpup Thats a good idea I wouldnt mind that

Catspaw123 · 19/07/2020 16:55

Went in Tesco yesterday and a customer shouted at me asking why I wasn't wearing one. I don't have to yet but didn't reply tbh. Not entirely sure but think she took a photo on her phone so I'm probably on a Facebook group somewhere. She held the phone up as if taking a pic not sure if she actually did

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 19/07/2020 17:15

Not keen on the cooling masks because that unnecessary plastic and cooling chemicals. I have some fabric masks I can wash and iron.

I don't know why you see it as a race to the bottom, it's not convenient but neither is infecting others with COVID. You are very compassionate in some cases, but not in others. it seems.

HeresMe · 19/07/2020 17:26

Once masks become compulsory next week the next thing will be is the person's mask good enough and enough plys, I'm calling this now.

HeIenaDove · 19/07/2020 17:30

Bullshit Chardonnay. A race to the bottom harms everyone. I dont want people with medical conditions challenged if they cant wear masks. How is that not compassionate? Have i said i wont wear anything? NO. Have i said that no one should wear face masks NO. I would not mind being first in line to test a vaccine. Wouldnt bother me. Im not anti mask Im not anti vaccine. im anti discrimination though. You are the one placing eco worries above deaths from Covid.

Speaking of discrimination...................here is a post that appeared on another thread.

I may have missed it but has there been a demand for children to carry their birth certificates when they are in shops? Exemption applies to children under 11 - some children look young for their age, some look older. Presumably those who favour a rigorous burden of proof being placed on those with medical exemption feel just as strongly about age exemption and would want to apply the same conditions. If not, I wonder why

Interesting point.

HeIenaDove · 19/07/2020 17:32

@HeresMe Already seen that on Twitter.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 19/07/2020 17:36

So why is it a race to the bottom?

I'm confused. Wear a mask, so others won't get your germs. How is that a race to the bottom? You are saving people , compassionately, selflessly, anonymously, obvs. You are the hero of your lunchtime, and everybody else's lunchtime. No bottoms there.

HeIenaDove · 19/07/2020 17:40

"Wear a mask, so others won't get your germs"

I am Read my previous post again and stop gaslighting.

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 19/07/2020 17:47

So how is it a race to the bottom? The saving lives by keeping your germs to yourself business? Aren't you glad to part of it? A lean mean life saving mask wearing machine?

HeIenaDove · 19/07/2020 17:52

Its a race to the bottom to expect people to cut up old socks for face masks, (Its particularly poorer people who are being expected to do this) when other countries are providing them for free or cooled ones for summer

DO BETTER!!!

HeresMe · 19/07/2020 17:53

@HelenaDove

What happened to worry about what you do you can't worry what others only what you do.

The mask Nazis and some of them are are proper scary.

HeIenaDove · 19/07/2020 17:55

I adhered to the lockdown Didnt go and see my elderly mum for months despite her crying down the phone. I have disposable face masks. One reusable mask And visors.

Do you really think people will adher to a second lockdown if they keep being told that whatever they are doing it is not good enough? And im speaking generally.
