There seems to be no acceptance at all that many perfectly ordinary, law-abiding people will wear one but with genuine misgivings as to their utility and potential unwitting side-effects
Agreed - this is my position. I don't believe they do any good and no-one has been able to point me to any real evidence that they do. And I will avoid going places where I have to wear a mask
@MessAllOver Thu 16-Jul-20 22:30:24
@PhilCornwall1. You are absolutely entitled to go into a shop without wearing a mask if you have medical (including psychological) reasons for doing so. I certainly won't be joining the mask vigilantes to shame you and I think it's awful that people are doing this. You do indeed have the 'right' to shop. But it does increase the risk for the rest of us and someone could catch Covid and die a painful death as a result.
It only raises the risk if they have it and the chance of that if they are continuing to social distance is miniscule.

no one does nuanced debate
Hmm! Whilst I agree with most of what you say. would that have carried more weight if you had said 'few' or similar.

I will wear a mask. My only concern is those without a medical condition claiming to have one so they don’t wear one
None of your business

@Lindy2
I expect other people are also literally sick of being infected by non mask wearers.
Not happened to me, yet, oddly enough.
Unfortunate if you repeatedly find yourself infected by other people. Terrible bad luck.
Not happened to me - or to anyone I know either. Not likely to either with only 1/4000 being infected and unless they are ALL asymptomatic in which case what the fuck are people worried about far fewer than that out on the street not knowing they are ill.

One of my grandmothers did. To hear her talk one could easily believe all these things were done only to her, and everyone else was having a high old time.
Why does that remind me of someone on MN

I’m surprised no one considers the risk of infection in these discussions. 1 in 3900 people had covid when the announcement re wearing mandatory mask was made. So the chances of catching it in a shop are really quite small for the average shopper.
My big issue is that there seems to be a general assumption that everyone potentially has covid and therefore mask wearing must be mandatory. It’s a complete fallacy which I personally find ridiculous.
and me - see point above
@MessAllOver Sat 18-Jul-20 13:59:54
But people with Covid don't have a big sign tattooed on their forehead saying that they have it. Many don't have any symptoms at all. So it makes sense to assume everyone has it to limit the spread.
No it doesn't - If 1 in 4000 have it then the chances are low. Any of those that are ill with it won't be out and about (and if this is a terrible disease, most will be very ill - and if most aren't very ill then it's not a terrible disease) so maybe 1 in 8,000 or 10,000. Then, on top of that, you have to be in close contact for a period of time to catch it.
Makes no sense at all to me.
I'll wear one if I go somewhere I legally have to, masks won't protect me or anyone else because (a) I won't be close to anyone for any period of time and (b) I haven't been anywhere to catch it.
It won't mean we get back to normal any quicker because shopping isn't a risky behaviours anyway BUT whatever. I don't even know why I have bothered because whether you agree with me or think masks are magic going to reduce otherwise certain transmission what I say won't change your mind.
