Had an appointment booked today and I've been looking forward to it for months.

On arrival I had to have my temperature taken and was told it was too high to be allowed in.

I laughed as I assumed she was joking since I felt fine, I Wfh and haven't been anywhere!!
Not even a supermarket.

She told me it was 37.3 and she would have to cancel my appointment!!!!

I am so upset, I've had to rebook and she has nothing for 8 weeks 😣

I called the Dr as I thought I must be coming down with something without knowing, but the GP told me that this was a normal range temperature and particularly for that time of day (app was 3pm)

So what wasn't I allowed in 😢

I felt like a kid at Christmas today going to the salon, I cried all the way home that my appointment was cancelled! 😖

Re under the tongue thermometer or under armpit ones, I was given one of these when I first started in community nursing. I realised that it was giving me nearly the same reading for everyone and so I complained to my manager that this was not good enough and we needed the tympanic ones. Got one soon after and no issues since

ravensoaponarope · 23/07/2020 09:17

I'm sorry they cancelled your appointment and you were so upset. When you've been looking forward to something for a long time, it's really upsetting to be told it's cancelled and to then fear you are seriously ill.

I had a hospital appointment this week and they didn't take my temperature, I was just allowed in. I find that concerning.

booboo24 · 23/07/2020 16:18

My body temperature is always around 37.3, it's normal for me, so I too wouldn't be allowed anywhere in that case! I've worried about this a lot as I know I have a slightly higher body temperature all the while

DontDoItGeorge · 23/07/2020 23:20

My temp was 37.5 at work today. (Nurse) Nobody was worried and I was allowed to go about my day. The cut off is 37.8 in my trust.

@TheLegendOfZelda

I was just going to say ...it can be undiagnosed underactive thyroid. Yours sounds under medicated maybe, 8T8w?
I am having monthly blood tests for hashimotos disease as my TSH levels are really erratic apparently (between 2.1 and 12.8)can this cause a very low, normal for me, temperature? I've also put on almost 2st on weight the last 5 months despite eating and exercising as normal. Would love to hear if you know about TSH levels. Thanks.
8T8w · 25/07/2020 14:20

That was badly worded!i have monthly blood tests after being diagnosed as it is still fluctuating too much. I don't read up online about medical conditions because I really don't want to be scared by what I read

DontDoItGeorge · 25/07/2020 15:57

Well this will make you laugh. I went to the hairdresser this morning, at the door I was asked to gel my hands which I did. The owner said she needed to do my temp, ok I said. She zapped me and it was 32, she wrote it in the book along with my name and phone number.
I said hold on if my temp was 32 I'd be extremely ill or dead😯 She said oh really, and laughed. She did it again and it was 35. I said oh I'm only hypothermic now!
Honestly she had no clue to what a normal temp should be and was just noting down all these random temps in a book!
Its ridiculous! At least google what a normal temp is ffs😠

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 25/07/2020 19:44

@DontDoItGeorge, I am sure she appreciated your remarks!
hope she wasnt the one cutting your hair!

Prime example of the “good British common sense" that Boris Johnson keeps banging on about Grin

DontDoItGeorge · 25/07/2020 19:58

@CrowdedHouseinQuarantine should I have said nothing? Surely you agree that if someone is taking your temperature then they should at least know what the norm is?! She even wrote 32° in her notebook.
I have no objection to having my temp taken but at least know what you're doing!
And no, she didn't cut my hair.

Quackersandcheese3 · 25/07/2020 20:05

Maybe don’t call and complain but ask them to explain. Say you spoke to gp and a temp of 37 is considered normal .

CrowdedHouseinQuarantine · 25/07/2020 20:09

no @DontDoItGeorge, i dont think they should be expected to understand a temperature tbh!
they know their higher limit,
they dont actually need to know the meaning but you told them, the way you tell the story doesnt show you in a good light but it is probably in the telling

DontDoItGeorge · 25/07/2020 20:46

@CrowdedHouseinQuarantine
You seem to be under the illusion that I was horrible to this person! I wasnt atall, as I said in my post, she laughed when I said 32 meant I'd probably be dead.
The lady who cut my hair thought it was funny too. There was no malice on any part.

MinorArcana · 25/07/2020 21:08

@CrowdedHouseinQuarantine if they don’t understand what a normal temperature range is, then they shouldn’t be taking temperatures.

Someone who knows what a normal temperature is would understand that 32 degrees is dangerously low. And they’d understand that if a healthy looking customer showed a temperature of 32 degrees, then it’s likely that the thermometer is not being used correctly.

If they don’t understand that, and therefore don’t correct how they’re using the thermometer, there’s a very real chance that they’ll allow customers with genuinely high temperatures into the hairdressers.

Popc0rn · 25/07/2020 21:10

@CrowdedHouseinQuarantine

The only mandatory thing hairdressers actually have to do according to government guidelines is wear a visor. Everything else is optional. If they are choosing to take peoples temperatures, but not bothering to check that...

a) their thermometer works/they know how to use it, and
b) they know what a normal temperature range is (so that when it reads 32 they know it can't be right unless their client is dead, and that they need to check it again)

...then what is the point in them choosing to do it in the first place? Either do it right or not at all.

@DontDoItGeorge was quite polite about it to me!

GreekOddess · 25/07/2020 21:13

My normal body temperature is 37.5 it's sometimes higher but never lower.

DontDoItGeorge · 25/07/2020 21:17

@Popc0rn and @MinorArcana thankyou! Common sense does reign after allSmile

PJ6M · 25/07/2020 21:29

You cried all the way home? You are joking right? 😂

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/07/2020 22:30

They are stupid. Even if used correctly the accuracy is around +-0.2c anyway.
