missmcfee · 16/07/2020 00:56

Had an appointment booked today and I've been looking forward to it for months.

On arrival I had to have my temperature taken and was told it was too high to be allowed in.

I laughed as I assumed she was joking since I felt fine, I Wfh and haven't been anywhere!!
Not even a supermarket.

She told me it was 37.3 and she would have to cancel my appointment!!!!

I am so upset, I've had to rebook and she has nothing for 8 weeks 😣

I called the Dr as I thought I must be coming down with something without knowing, but the GP told me that this was a normal range temperature and particularly for that time of day (app was 3pm)

So what wasn't I allowed in 😢

I felt like a kid at Christmas today going to the salon, I cried all the way home that my appointment was cancelled! 😖

37.3 is a normal within range temp.
I work in a hospital and have my temp taking every day. Mine has been as high as 37.5 and I've carried on working
Our cut off at work is 37.8 any temp this or above and you are sent home.

murakamilove · 17/07/2020 19:26

For COVID PHE advise is 37.8 and above.

Iliketeaagain · 17/07/2020 19:31

I have had a shitter of a week and this thread has properly made me laugh.

Sorry you couldn't get your hair cut OP - I would have cried too.

But staff with temps of 33-34 and never higher than 35, made me laugh so hard my belly ached. Imagining a hairdresser full off hypothermic clients 😂😂

westendgirlx · 17/07/2020 19:34

I work in social care and the unsafe limit is over 37.8 degrees. Clearly your hairdressers hasn't a clue! I'd book somewhere else. They upset you unnecessarily. My hairdressers took my temperature and it was similar to yours and let me in

PseudoBadger · 17/07/2020 19:37

Absolutely no official guidance recommends temperature checks for businesses.

OverTheRainbow88 · 17/07/2020 19:39

Did you walk there? Or cycle? That’s what I’m Worried about kids having thier temps taken then rejected from school as lots will cycle in then feel hot!

Mikki69 · 17/07/2020 20:13

heartsonacake... You need a new thermometer! If it's consistenly reading at 33-35 that's classed as a Hypothermia!!

Sailingblue · 17/07/2020 20:40

A lot of people can’t take the temp right. When I went in for my baby’s jabs, the lady doing it at the door didn’t have it in her ear right and noted down it was 35 which was clearly bollocks (I’d taken it earlier and it was normal so I didn’t correct her). If they were getting it wrong in the GP, normal businesses will make regular cock-ups if they try and temp test. I certainly wouldn’t want someone doing an under the tongue one on multiple clients.

Hay fever seemed to raise mine. My usual normal is 36.8 ish but when my hay fever was up it was 37.3-37.5. I possibly had COVID earlier in the year as I was hitting 38.5 and felt horrid.

OverTheRainbow88 · 17/07/2020 20:52

I also find the forehead ones always make my kids temp higher than the ear one

user1490954378 · 17/07/2020 20:56

You are right, it is normal. Maybe they made a mistake in what they though wasn't normal, but it's their business, they can say no, and honestly I can understand that they might just have been a bit over careful at the moment, and who can really blame them?! Just get a home colour kit and crack on with it yourself. I do mine like shampooing my hair, I don't even do the sectioning the hair thing, and it's really easy. Do mine in the bath with a mirror propped behind the taps to see that I've soaked up all my hair, and then soak while I'm waiting for the dye to take, then empty the bath and shower the dye out. It works fab. Do your patch test though, as obvs it is important.

believinginangels · 17/07/2020 20:59

missmcfee I could have written this, except it was an emergency dental appointment. Their temp gauge showed that I was 37.5. Their rule was 37.1 and they won't treat me until I have a negative test! Bearing in mind that 37 is within the normal range, it's ludicrous (in my opinion) - the agent on the 119 test help-line told me that they don't consider it to be a fever until it's 38 degrees. My husband's average core temperature using our home (professional standard, according to the box) thermometer is 37.3 so he wouldn't pass any tests! Mine at home is between 36.7 and 36.9.

Usernamerequired · 17/07/2020 21:13

My temp can fluctuate anywhere between 36.4° to 37.6°, this is normal for me due to medical conditions. High when having a hot flush and around 34° on a odd day. Maybe they didn’t have a proper thermometer. Did the only check once. Was it an in ear one and correctly sanitised i wonder. Phone and complain, they are not medically trained And do not know what it the norm for you-then get a new hairdressers.

catsarecute · 17/07/2020 21:14

The hairdressers are clearly over-reacting on that one, I wouldn't count anything under 37.5 as a temperature. I'm sorry you were disappointed. Although I do think it's good that they are taking temperatures - but they need to get their guidelines right on what they count as a temperature it, and use a non-contact thermometer (no way would I be putting a thermometer in my mouth in a salon!). I think that, like mask wearing, temperature checks could become a useful safeguard as levels get lower in the community. It worries me that it's not in the guidelines for schools to check temperatures when they go back full time - I think some schools have been doing, but they're not advised to, and my son's school is not planning to check temperatures :-(

Lovely13 · 17/07/2020 21:22

May be cool down before entering next time. Fan, cold drink. I am usually super cold, but then get a hot flush. Maybe you had the same?

purplebunny2012 · 17/07/2020 21:52

@Coffeecak3

Skin temperature is different to body temp and varies with the environment. 33° c is normal with an infrared thermometer.
Yes, but saying they haven't seen anything near 37 is naive. It's comparing apples with oranges
Riv12345 · 17/07/2020 22:02

Under the tongue?

We haven't used the under the tongue method for years!!!

AllTheUserNamesAreTaken · 17/07/2020 22:17

I’d be destined to have my natural colour mousy hair (which since lockdown I have discovered also has grey! 😩) as my temperature is always above 37 and DS is rarely below this either. We’re both very warm people.

They’re due to do temp checks for kids and parents at DS kickboxing classes. Looks like we’ll have to have the air con set to flipping freezing in the car on the journey there!

3Blues · 17/07/2020 22:40

In my case... 37 plus is a fever and I'm really ill. I think we all agree, including you OP, that their assessment was correct albeit disappointing.

caringcarer · 17/07/2020 23:09

It feels bad because you have looked forward to it so much. Calm down and ring and ask if you can be put on a short call list. If another person has similar to you and they will not let them in they may agree to call you up if you can get there at short notice. Try not to hurry around as it will just make you hotter.

DontDoItGeorge · 17/07/2020 23:22

@3Blues But their assessment wasnt correct! 37 to the majority of the population is a normal temp.
I sit at 37.4/37.5 and that's within normal range.
37.8 and above is a raised temp.
The hairdresser has every right to decide who she let's in her shop but her knowledge of what is a normal temperature is wrong.

Thats the take i got From the thread

Most people seem to agree that its up to the hair dresser but she’s working with the wrong info

JFM27 · 17/07/2020 23:37

I wonder how they treat menopausal women and women on tamoxifen like ,me.I get hot all the while.god knows what my temperature is i never take it.One of reasons i hate facemasks is my tendancy to overheat.

Surely peoples temperatures do vary.

staceyflack · 17/07/2020 23:39

It was bloody hot today! Your hairdresser was totally over the top. Love from registered nurse of 30 years. Xxx💐

copperoliver · 18/07/2020 00:16

I would not book with her again I'd find someone new. This would have annoyed me so much, I would not want to go back. X

shergar · 18/07/2020 01:22

Your salon are obviously idiots, but why on earth would you call your GP in case you’re “coming down with something”? You’re a functioning adult; do you honestly think NHS staff have nothing better to do, particularly during a pandemic? Hmm
