Had an appointment booked today and I've been looking forward to it for months.

On arrival I had to have my temperature taken and was told it was too high to be allowed in.

I laughed as I assumed she was joking since I felt fine, I Wfh and haven't been anywhere!!
Not even a supermarket.

She told me it was 37.3 and she would have to cancel my appointment!!!!

I am so upset, I've had to rebook and she has nothing for 8 weeks 😣

I called the Dr as I thought I must be coming down with something without knowing, but the GP told me that this was a normal range temperature and particularly for that time of day (app was 3pm)

So what wasn't I allowed in 😢

I felt like a kid at Christmas today going to the salon, I cried all the way home that my appointment was cancelled! 😖

They have a limit for temps... Wear a hat next time & stay cool!

TrixieMixie · 17/07/2020 18:02

Menopause, hot flushes and exercise can raise your skin temperature but don’t raise your core body temperature by much. I run 6 miles into work each morning and am also menopausal but even though I present to the electronic thermometer immediately after running, my temp is always 36.5. Neither exercise nor menopause should result in a ‘fever’ level temp reading. Which is over 37.5. I do get a shower at work btw!

Bizawit · 17/07/2020 18:08

YANBU that’s ridiculous. Your temperature was normal. The world has gone bonkers.

DanceItOut · 17/07/2020 18:09

How bizarre. Dh went to a barber and they didn’t check his temp, didn’t require him to wear a mask, one of the staff (Not the one cutting DH) was wearing a mask with his nose uncovered, they didn’t clean anything down between customers, though they did have customers wear disposable plastic gowns rather than regular ones. Didn’t even sweep the hair between customers. When he came out I was like “why didn’t you say something to them? Like ask them to wipe down the stuff before you just took a seat straight after the last person?” He just shrugged and was like “didn’t want to be awkward, no one else said anything” so I’m a bit surprised the salon was taking temperatures but yes 37.3 isn’t a temperature, above 37.5 is considered raised fever is usually over 38. Think they were being a bit over eager with the thermometer

Bizawit · 17/07/2020 18:09

@linsey2581

I work in a dialysis ward and we don’t allow anyone in that has a temperature that is over 37.7. Sorry but your hairdresser is correct to refuse anyone that has a raised temperature. Better safe than sorry.
Huh?? But OP’s temperature was 37.3 which is a normal temperature. 37.7 is an elevated temperature.
WatchoutfortheROUS · 17/07/2020 18:09

I'd not have rebooked to be honest but made an appointment elsewhere

Jack80 · 17/07/2020 18:10

Can you not book a mobile stylist. I would also call and say you was turned away and you called your gp and have also checked your temperature at home and it was fine like the gp stated.

cologne4711 · 17/07/2020 18:14

Menopause, hot flushes and exercise can raise your skin temperature but don’t raise your core body temperature by much

But your core temperature does rise over the course of your monthly cycle, along with your resting heart rate. Mine goes from about 62 to 70 and then drops down again. I don't know what my temperature does, but my hairdresser did let me in.

Mom2my2 · 17/07/2020 18:15

37.3 is well within the normal range of body temperature, especially if done on a warm afternoon. Most store bought thermometers are not regularly calibrated like the ones used in medical settings, so may not even be 100% accurate.

Hair dresser are just being over cautious. NHS guidance for self isolation is temperature above 37.7 I think. But they are a private business & they may have set their own guidelines & their prerogative to refuse.

However your reaction seems over the top & disproportional - call GP, cry on the way home- it’s just a missed hair dressing appointment !
Either do your roots yourself as past posters have suggested or book with another salon who has an earlier appointment available if it’s that important to you. GP can’t get you into a hair dressing appointment Shock
People haven’t been able to access routine hospital appointments & are struggling to cope with pain/discomfort etc- And you call GP about hairdresser not letting you in for a temperature of 37.3 Hmm

Clarey12988 · 17/07/2020 18:17

37.3 is a completely normal temp. 37.8 and above is classed as a fever. Theyre going to be turning alot of people away if 37 is thier cut off 🙈

Lisa82sim · 17/07/2020 18:20

I would complain. Id actually go back and question them on their knowledge of what a healthy range temperature is according the the government guidelines and NHS... I'd ask them what temperature they were cutting off at and if it was 37.3 I'd be wanting to know why... She's a hairdresser, not a Dr. She's their to cut hair, not decide her own made up theory on what a fever is. After that... I'd find myself a new hairdresser. There will be alot of people rejected if she keeps that number up. Maybe you could have asked her to use a different thermometer too for a second check.

nannybeach · 17/07/2020 18:20

People keep saying on here "but she didnt have a temp," of course she did, even if you are clincially dead you have a temp for some time, what they mean is an abnormal one

Bramleyapples13 · 17/07/2020 18:24

I think there's a lot of places and people that are now having to do stuff they've had no training in and don't know the full details of things. It sounds like they're being very cautious. But there's plenty of other hairdressers if you can't wait eight weeks.

nannybeach · 17/07/2020 18:25

I have taken my temp during a hot fluish it was 36, you core temp does not affect your skin temp, I can be so hot my hair sticks to my scalp and itches.

ProfessorPootle · 17/07/2020 18:28

My temperature is over 37 most of the time, it’s just how it is naturally between 37 - 37.5. I’m not planning on going to hairdressers or anywhere else as I’d never get in.

I had a temperature with suspected Covid and it was 40.3.

bubblebubblebubbletrouble · 17/07/2020 18:31

I'd have thought 37.3 is in the margin of error of accuracy for most thermometers & wouldn't think it was high.
On the other hand salon owner perfectly entitled to put in any criteria she wants to protect her/himself & the staff.

eeyore228 · 17/07/2020 18:41

It can be debated all we like but essentially they are the ones cutting hair and if they are worried then they use their judgement and right to refuse service. Some people are still really worried (whether we agree with it or not) and are being very cautious. I’m the end it’s a haircut so not really the end of the world.

Celestine70 · 17/07/2020 18:42

YABU.

JBEM4 · 17/07/2020 18:44

I own a salon and won't be taking temps of my clients purely because I am not a medical professional and therefore not qualified to determine what a clients normal temp is and a higher temp could be for a number of reasons.
I understand their caution but that's a bit too far in my opinion.

RUOKHUN · 17/07/2020 18:48

37.3 is not a temperature!!!

LovelyIssues · 17/07/2020 18:54

What!? A fever is 38 or higher!?? My average temp sits at 37.5/6

Astressie · 17/07/2020 18:56

I would complain. Had day surgery (general anaesthetic) booked at the hospital. my temperature ranged around 37.3-37-5. Nurses thought I might have to go home even after self-isolating for 2 weeks and having a negative covid test. The surgeon did not even consider it as being an issue and said would only think about cancelling if it was 38. my blood pressure was high after surgery - not surprising. Go back and tell them what your doctor said.

Bizawit · 17/07/2020 19:02

Can’t believe all the people on this thread who think this is fine Hmm. 37.3 is not a fever!!!!

Ezzabean · 17/07/2020 19:04

I think they are being overly cautious, I work in a hospital & we only treat anyone over 37.8 as suspect covid. 37.3 is a perfectly normal temp.
I’ve been working through the pandemic in a ward with covid patients & to be honest, I find some of the precautions people are taking as a bit OTT & not actually scientific or evidence based. They are way more extreme than the precautions we take when actually working closely with someone we know to be covid positive.
