Had an appointment booked today and I've been looking forward to it for months.

On arrival I had to have my temperature taken and was told it was too high to be allowed in.

I laughed as I assumed she was joking since I felt fine, I Wfh and haven't been anywhere!!
Not even a supermarket.

She told me it was 37.3 and she would have to cancel my appointment!!!!

I am so upset, I've had to rebook and she has nothing for 8 weeks 😣

I called the Dr as I thought I must be coming down with something without knowing, but the GP told me that this was a normal range temperature and particularly for that time of day (app was 3pm)

So what wasn't I allowed in 😢

I felt like a kid at Christmas today going to the salon, I cried all the way home that my appointment was cancelled! 😖

I'd be laughed off the phone by the receptionist at my doctors if I called and said I am wondering if I might be unwell but some totally unqualified person said I had a temp! There's no way I'd get to speak to an actual doctor!

DontDoItGeorge · 18/07/2020 13:23

@heartsonacake Do you work in a funeral parlour? I think your employees must be dead or in need of urgent medical attention!!
For goodness sake please at least buy a new thermometer and have a little read about what the normal temperature is for a living human.🤦‍♀️

RowboatsinDisguise · 18/07/2020 13:28

😂😂😂 Temperatures of 33 and 34!

Another health professional here who can confirm that 37.3 is a bog standard, average day to day temperature for a healthy adult. It’s on the warmer side but easily explained by warm weather, taking a brisk walk etc.

We went to a local attraction recently and had temperature checks on the door. I thought this was hilarious as they were using a non-touch forehead thermometer on a freezing cold, wet, windy day. Literally no one was going to have warm forehead skin. The whole thing was a farce!

RowboatsinDisguise · 18/07/2020 13:30

Just checked mine under the tongue FWIW. It’s 37.3! Have been out in the sun. Not infectious or dying.

Brockaslass · 18/07/2020 13:40

I get morphine fever due to the medication in on and my tempreture is always around 38. Thank God the don't check round here for tempreture I'd get nothing done. I don't feel unwell due to it. But I always appear hot.

Randomfires · 18/07/2020 14:27

At my sons school the forehead monitors routinely say the kids are 34 or 35 degrees so god knows how they’re of any use to anyone. Maybe they have a low cut off? Doubt it

DontDoItGeorge · 18/07/2020 15:31

@heartsonacake here you go...I'd .buy a new thermometer I'd I were you.....

mummabear1967 · 18/07/2020 16:44

Yes I’m sure that was annoying for you OP and having to wait for 8 weeks will be even more annoying but you have to understand we can’t afford to take big risks at a time like this.

If your temp was over the threshold, then I think it’s only better to be safe rather than sorry. You may not have other symptoms but your temp could well mean that you have Covid, you just don’t know.

What if you actually had Covid and they allowed you in despite your high temp? You could spread it to someone. Yes it’s very frustrating and I’d be a bit pissed off myself, but it’s for everyone’s safety. Can’t afford to take any chances at all.

TempsPerdu · 18/07/2020 17:13

@mummabear1967

But what about all those who, like me, have a temperature that stays permanently above 37 degrees? I’ve been taking mine regularly for the past couple of months and it’s consistently between 37 and 37.5. Haven’t been unwell in all of that time and have no underlying conditions. Do we just not get to enter hairdressers and other public spaces for the duration of the pandemic?

Topseyt · 18/07/2020 17:29

@mummabear1967 She didn't have a high temperature. She had a normal temperature. 37.3° is very much within normal range, as given on the NHS website.

The hairdresser is turning away people with normal body temperatures who are bringing perfectly good business into her salon.

She is also using an under the tongue thermometer, which is a questionable practice given the hygiene issue and the way Covid 19 usually spreads.

mummabear1967 · 18/07/2020 17:45

@Topseyt well if her temp is normal then she would need to complain, excuse my lack of knowledge but I haven’t read the NHS website so I did not know that 37 was a normal temp.

I didn’t read the thread properly but if salon needs shut down if it is using that kind of thermo

DontDoItGeorge · 18/07/2020 17:52

@mummabear1967 she didn't have a raised temp!!! Her temp was normal.
The hairdresser needs to educate herself about what a raised temp is before she tells people they are too hot

mummabear1967 · 18/07/2020 17:53

@DontDoItGeorge yes I’ve discovered that so OP needs to ring and complain and ask to be given another appointment ASAP.

I’m more concerned that the hairdresser is using an unhygienic thermometer. It needs shut down

Azaleah · 18/07/2020 18:05

Sorry folks, but this thread is hilarious and thanks for this, I really needed it Grin. The irony is that anyone can be infectious without a high temp, so it's utter bollocks to rely on temps, unless you do have a high fever, in that case you must be very brave or strong to go to the hairdresser (not to mention very stupid).
OP, you should let your hairdresser know they have been the subject of this thread. Send them a link.

Yes, under the tongue is horrible.

user1490954378 · 18/07/2020 18:34

There is no way I'd be letting a hairdresser put a thermometer under my tongue anyway, but honestly the OP could complain all she wants, but the hairdresser was probably just being over cautious. I think I might be too, if I was running a business where I had people coming in and out all the time, who myself and my staff were having close physical contact with. It isn't so completely not understandable. Saying you don't understand the 'justification' is a bit OTT. Justification for what? The fact you were turned away because they just got it wrong? Jeez, they are bound to be a bit on edge about it all and I'd be a bit miffed too, but I wouldn't think it needed justifying, I'd just go home and do it myself! The OP can easily learn how to colour her hair at home. I learned to do mine, and I'd never done it before either! I haven't had my hair cut in ages and it isn't the end of the world. Just tie it up and learn some new styling for longer hair.

Iwillstayfree · 18/07/2020 19:02

Taking a temperature is a medical procedure and requires training in interpreting normal fluctuations in temperature. Ovulation and menstruating increase your temp as do hot flushes. It is ridiculous that hairdressers, waitresses etc are now taking temperatures of the public!

Playmysong · 20/07/2020 11:00

My normal temperature range is 35.8-36.2c. Don’t know why it is lower, but it is. If I have a temperature of 37c I consider it that I’m running a low grade fever!

It's because your thermometer is inaccurate (most are).
lilgreen · 20/07/2020 11:48

Mine is 36.3 most days I have tested under the tongue.

That's just rubbish. Some people do have a lower temperature, like me. It is often between 34.8 and 35.5°.

Last year when I was in hospital for a week my temperature never went above 35.9°. They used different thermometers and different methods - under my tongue, under my arm on my forehead and got nothing past 35.9°. (I have hashimoto's disease and wonder if that is contributing factor.)

TheLegendOfZelda · 21/07/2020 20:27

I was just going to say ...it can be undiagnosed underactive thyroid. Yours sounds under medicated maybe, 8T8w?

Rayn · 21/07/2020 20:31

Possibly they made a double booking. They would not have wanted to sit around not earning for a couple of hours x

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 22/07/2020 14:52

This thread has been worrried OP, I have my first hair appointment since March tomorrow night and for research purposes took my own temp at the weekend using my thermometer for work (I work in community nursing so know what temp is normal) it is a tympanic one and my temp was 37.2. My temp is always around the 37.0 to 37.5 mark as far as I know so I must run a little hotter? I don’t know but I know that I wouldn’t be overly concerned until around 37.8.

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 22/07/2020 14:55

Nhs inform even says a fever is 37.8
