Had an appointment booked today and I've been looking forward to it for months.

On arrival I had to have my temperature taken and was told it was too high to be allowed in.

I laughed as I assumed she was joking since I felt fine, I Wfh and haven't been anywhere!!
Not even a supermarket.

She told me it was 37.3 and she would have to cancel my appointment!!!!

I am so upset, I've had to rebook and she has nothing for 8 weeks 😣

I called the Dr as I thought I must be coming down with something without knowing, but the GP told me that this was a normal range temperature and particularly for that time of day (app was 3pm)

So what wasn't I allowed in 😢

I felt like a kid at Christmas today going to the salon, I cried all the way home that my appointment was cancelled! 😖

Also. When I got home, I took my temperature and it was 36.9 - this was 30 minutes after she'd taken it.

I've taken it a few times since and it's not been above 37!!

YABU - surely better safe than sorry. If you're not going out anyway can you just buy root concealer?

Singerleon · 16/07/2020 00:59

Yes that temperature is not a fever! I’d call and complain and explain what your GP said

But my temperature was in the normal range. I don't understand why I wasn't allowed in.

I would completely understand if I had a fever but the Dr said that's not a fever!!

They’re just being thorough and responsible - imagine they let you (or someone else with a raised temperature) in who did happen to have coronavirus, you’d be annoyed that you were exposed to the virus/become ill/need to self isolate etc

It is very annoying that you have to wait another 2 months though. I think I’d probably look at another salon.

But my temperature wasn't raised, well not according to the GP. She said average temp is 37 but each person varies throughout the day and my temp was in the normal range.

I completely understand their procedure and I'm glad they're taking precautions but I don't really understand why I was refused.

SengaStrawberry · 16/07/2020 01:05

But OP didn’t have a raised temperature. That’s a normal temperature as confirmed by her GP!

OP find another salon I’m sure someone will be able to squeeze you in sooner

Mnhealth202020 · 16/07/2020 01:05

But a salon is a private business, they can revoke your invitation to enter for any reason they want (provided it’s not discriminatory). They are not working to the same standards as the NHS or your GP, so if they feel that as your temperature is too high you pose a risk to them/their other clients, they are entitled to refuse access. They haven’t done anything wrong.

But surely they should know what a normal range of temp is and not just go by their own guesses. A quick google tells you that 37.3 is normal!

Even if they’re wrong, they’re allowed to refuse to let you in though.

By all means call them and complain - really hope you’re able to get a sooner appointment. Or just go elsewhere as their customer service is a bit shoddy

Yes I respect that. I just didn't really understand their reasoning or justification behind it.

And depending on the result of your complaint, think about leaving a review of your experience because I’m sure others will be interested!

I’m thinking that perhaps your salon might be overzealous, as they don’t want to be out of work again/without income if they catch anything.

I do feel bad complaining, I've been going there for years and never had any issues, but I just felt like they'd been completely unreasonable.

The first thing I did when I got in the car was google temperature range and it was clear 37.3 wasn't a cause for concern so I just couldn't understand why they wouldn't let me in.
I didn't ask them what their cut off was but I'm guessing 37, surely then they will be refusing others if people's temperature fluctuates throughout the day!!

I've never dyed my own hair otherwise I would've just done it myself!! ☹️

A quick google tells you that 37.3 is normal!

And a quick Google says the NHS advise 37 degrees.

Are you seriously going to complain, that in the middle of a frigging pandemic, a salon was being ultra cautious? It's a high risk place, hence why they have only just opened. You've just said you don't go out anyhow.

Your salon will have lost money from that decision to try to protect their other customers.

The NHS says the "average" body temperature is 37° but up to 37.5 can be considered normal!!

Pack your neck with ice packs and go elsewhere!

My daughter is always hot, so will never get her hair cut!

missmcfee · 16/07/2020 01:30

And no, I'm not going to complain.

I'm happy that there are people taking precautions, it's what needs to happen, but just really didn't see what I couldn't go in if my temperature is in the normal range and that's even by NHS standards.

37.3 is a low-grade fever.

My work checks our temperature on entry and anything 37.5 or over means you can’t enter.

My usual body temperature is 36.6.

My usual body temperature is 36.6.

Im reading a document now on the NHS which says 37.5-37.9 is a low grade fever. 38 or above is a fever.

The GP today didn't tell me I had a fever and I've checked it myself a few times since, it's not been over 37.

I don't usually check my temperature but if 37.3 is my normal range, I'm never going to be allowed in!!! 😢

So does that then mean your work allows people to work with a low grade fever?

A lot of hairdressers are open now, find somewhere else. Have a cold drink before you go in. Or do your own hair, it's not rocket science.

Nobodyputsdaisyinthecorner · 16/07/2020 02:05

37.3 is an absolutely normal temperature. I’m a worry wart but even I think that’s ott. I’d find another salon.

Pixxie7 · 16/07/2020 02:06

The hairdressers are working to guidelines, their probably ver nervous as well, you can’t really blame them and they don’t needs the custom at the moment.

AnneOfQueenSables · 16/07/2020 02:17

If 37 is their cut-off then you don't get in with a temp of 37.3. It doesn't matter if you're only 0.3 above. It doesn't matter if your temp fell within half an hour. What matters is the information in front of them at the time and that was your temperature was over their threshold.
There would be no point in taking temperatures if they were going to say 'oh but it might fall in half an hour' or 'oh but it's only a bit over it'.
You must know this. Swallow your disappointment and admit you've over-reacted.

3cats · 16/07/2020 02:19

So does that then mean your work allows people to work with a low grade fever?

What it means is that different places have different criteria. The NHS says 37.8 or over. My work says 37.5 or over. Your hairdresser maybe thinks 37.0 or over.
