Hair dresser wouldn't let me in!!

Had an appointment booked today and I've been looking forward to it for months.

On arrival I had to have my temperature taken and was told it was too high to be allowed in.

I laughed as I assumed she was joking since I felt fine, I Wfh and haven't been anywhere!!
Not even a supermarket.

She told me it was 37.3 and she would have to cancel my appointment!!!!

I am so upset, I've had to rebook and she has nothing for 8 weeks 😣

I called the Dr as I thought I must be coming down with something without knowing, but the GP told me that this was a normal range temperature and particularly for that time of day (app was 3pm)

So what wasn't I allowed in 😢

I felt like a kid at Christmas today going to the salon, I cried all the way home that my appointment was cancelled! 😖

@bluefoxmug

how did they measure the temp. our office uses ear or forehead thermometers. with the ear kind they use 36.9 as cut off, with the 'speed gun' forehead kind 37.5.
Why do they use that as the cut off? Have they read the instruction manual?? It goes up to 37.5 (or 37.6, can't remember) as normal via ear. Mine is never below 37. I test it daily.

Here's a simple table for us all to refer to. You could give it to the hairdressers as well, op.

"The first thing I did when I got in the car was google temperature range and it was clear 37.3 wasn't a cause for concern"
Why did you then call the doctor?

It sounds like the hairdresser has chosen a cut off that is perhaps a bit lower than it should be. I get that you're disappointed but I think crying and ringing the doctor is overreacting. The hairdressers are just following their own very new policy and finding their feet. Have some cold drinks before you go next time.

TheLegendOfZelda · 16/07/2020 07:18

@betteliefsen

Yabu, you weren't being allowed in because you had a temperature. Your supposed right to a hair appointment is nothing compared to her business and loss of income. Get a grip.
But she didn't have a temperature?
MistakesOwned · 16/07/2020 07:18

I walked to the salon last week as it was a lovely day. Won’t be taking that risk again if it means I might work up a bit of a rosy glow.

DishRanAwayWithTheSpoon · 16/07/2020 07:20

37.3 is normal. Its not a fever. Especially if you have just walked in or stood outside in the sun

I think you should ring them because otherwise they are going to end up turning away all their customers!

2155User · 16/07/2020 07:21

All my energy in this thread has gone to laughing at @heartsonacake who thinks that a temperature of 33 is normal, thinks the NHS website isn't a good source of information and disregards everything because they work for a multinational corporation

eaglejulesk · 16/07/2020 07:24

Find another salon. The hairdresser may soon find she has no customers left if she is going to over-react like that. I'm not in the UK but I haven't heard of hairdressers here taking people's temps once they were allowed to re-open.

MistyMinge2 · 16/07/2020 07:25

2155User same here.

Multinational corporations are never ever wrong you know Grin

IsItGinOclock1 · 16/07/2020 07:25

This thread makes for amusing reading, who knew taking a temperature with a thermometer was so difficult. We've got ops hairdresser who thinks 37 is high as you point out totally normal, they should have let you in.

Then we've got heartsonacake who thinks a body temp of 33-34 is normal 😆 "We haven't had anything like 37". Where is your office based, Everest? I think your fancy company needs to invest in a better thermometer, either half your workforce have hypothermia or your thermometer is crap. Sounds like it's over 2 degrees out.

We have a digital at home that you can use on your head or in ear. My husband took our temps the other day (can't even remember why, I think one of the kids asked him!) 3 of us were 36.6 and one was 37, all fine. Ours flashes red and beebs if it detects a fever, no beebing at normal body temp! It does also vary from head to ear, I think in ear is more accurate.

Jilljams · 16/07/2020 07:26

Find another hairdresser.

IsItGinOclock1 · 16/07/2020 07:29

I meant to say 37.3, definitely not a temp.

Icequeen01 · 16/07/2020 07:30

We have to take our temps everyday at work and have been since lockdown. Our cut off is 37.8 which according to the NHS site is a fever. I often have 2 or 3 staff in (including myself) who are around 38.4 (but I've noticed it's us more mature ladies!). That does sound a very low temp and I literally would be turned away 9 times out of 10 with such a low temp.

verybritishproblems · 16/07/2020 07:31

@heartsonacake hypothermia starts at 35! I’m sure you’d be well on your way to death at 33, bearing in mind 32 is on the edge on mild hypothermia and under 28 is severe resulting in organ failure.

isabellerossignol · 16/07/2020 07:35

@2155User

All my energy in this thread has gone to laughing at *@heartsonacake who thinks that a temperature of 33 is normal, thinks the NHS website isn't a good source of information and disregards everything because they work for a multinational corporation*
And who doesn't trust the NHS on this because the link was posted by a random on the internet. Grin.

I'm not saying that the NHS have never got anything wrong but I'm fairly certain we can trust them on basic information like this.

mum2jakie · 16/07/2020 07:36

I'd be very annoyed and would take my custom elsewhere personally, rather than the risk the exact same thing happening in 8 weeks time! There are plenty of hairdressers in need of business.

loulouljh · 16/07/2020 07:37

I would find somewhere else. I am not going back to my usual nail lady as she wants to take my temperature. I am not that desperate to have my nails done that I am going to do that. For me it is OTT and would ruin the enjoyment of it.

eaglejulesk · 16/07/2020 07:40

So I think I’ll stick to believing them over someone on Mumsnet linking a random article.

A quick look on Google would tell you that the temps you quoted as "normal" most certainly are not, and several health workers have also tried to tell you that.

spiralflower · 16/07/2020 07:40

I was once in hospital ready to have surgery and my temperature was 37.4 - they said that was on the border and that at 37.5 they wouldn’t have gone ahead. So I can see their point.

DubaiDublin73 · 16/07/2020 07:42

@HeIenaDove

I wonder how this works with menopausal women.
Exactly ... I'd never get in if it was at the 'wrong' time.
LunaNorth · 16/07/2020 07:42

Does anyone know if heartsonacake works for a large multinational company? Only, s/he hasn’t mentioned it...

ListsWonderfulLists · 16/07/2020 07:45

That's ridiculous! I do wonder about my temperature though as I am never below 37. 37.1 - 37.7 is my normal. Just taken mine right now with an ear thermometer and it's 37.6. Been checking it regularly for months what with Covid and I just never go below 37 ;-/

MaudesMum · 16/07/2020 07:45

Oh, brilliant, something else to worry about. I'm menopausal and frequently have hot flushes, which get worse in hot weather, when I'm rushing around and when I'm stressed. In the "new normal" I'm going to be spending my life being refused entry to places.

CloudsCoveredTheSky · 16/07/2020 07:45

You couldn't get a haircut? I'm so sorry, that is terribly upsetting. How utterly horrendous for you.

Longtalljosie · 16/07/2020 07:46

@heartsonacake

They were right not to let you in; it’s important they take extra safety precautions.

I take my employees temperature every day; I’ve never had any of them being anywhere near 37. Highest I’ve had was 35; most are around 33-34. Your hairdresser will be seeing the same, and she doesn’t want to take a chance.

I don’t think you’re using the thermometer correctly!
Whenwillow · 16/07/2020 07:46

This thread has amused me, particularly @PhilCornwall1's replies!
OP, I'd have been miffed too, though like you, wouldn't complain. But I completely get that it's annoying. And also a bit disconcerted to be turned away.
Some of the replies on here have been harsh! If you hadn't been anywhere for months that would really add to the weirdness of the situation.
