If masks are made mandatory in England, will this put you off high street shopping?

Nope. I am pregnant and wear mine already. I would love to see others wear it and keep everyone safe.

Dolmolandsnowdrops · 13/07/2020 15:58

I will definitely start going shopping again if masks are being worn by most people. It feels much safer somehow.

mencken · 13/07/2020 15:59

no, although I was never a shop-for-fun type anyway. But if masks are mandatory I will feel safer when doing the essential errands. And if it keeps out the 'muzzle' types, all the better.

should be some official way of identifying the exempt, though, to prevent abuse.

MrsJonesAndMe · 13/07/2020 15:59

Yes, but I'm only doing food shopping at the moment. Everything else on line.

MarshaBradyo · 13/07/2020 16:00

I was pleased to hear on R4 Waterstones won’t expect retail staff to police it, he rightly said they wouldn’t be expected to deal with conflict from the few aggressors.

CountFosco · 13/07/2020 16:00

You should have enabled voting, would've interesting to see at a glance.

SunflowerProsecco · 13/07/2020 16:02

It would make me feel safer so I would be more likely to go shopping.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 13/07/2020 16:03

Mumsnet is probably not very typical though - it is inevitably going to over represent people who are comfortable doing things online, which means they have other options when it comes to shopping.

ProfessorRadcliffeEmerson · 13/07/2020 16:04

Yes. I want to see people's faces, masks make me feel as though I'm living in a dystopian novel.

TheLegendOfZelda · 13/07/2020 16:04

It would put me off, yes. I'm not the greatest loss to the shopping world though. It's a measure to improve confidence, more than anything, so I would guess the opinion polls led towards more people being happy to go out if everyone was wearing a mask
To me ..more people = more dangerous. You lot all come out, I go back in.

Keepdistance · 13/07/2020 16:06

No- more likely to go.
It's summer now. But in winter wouldnt you rather not be SI again because youve caught a non covid cough. As youll have to wait for the results. And turn around time will increase if everyone is ill.
Plus hoe expensive is a test for the gov?
WHO thinks it is airborne inside. But even if it isnt as i say there may be other temp causing illnesses.
Your kidswould have to be off school too as you SI as a family.
Plus obviously tests are 25% false negative so even when you do the right thing and stay off till you get a negative you could go back too soon.
Unless they get the spit tests going the swabs aren't probably that pleasant vs wearing a mask?

When temps drop outside we might find that it is more contagious outside too?

My claustrophobia doesn’t prevent me getting a Covid test (I’ve had one, it was fine). It does prevent me covering my nose and mouth.

Sunshinegirl82 · 13/07/2020 16:09

I find masks incredibly claustrophobic and uncomfortable so even though I understand the argument for making them compulsory I won't do any activity that requires one that not absolutely necessary.

I certainly wouldn't got to the shops just for a wander round, browse and coffee like I would have before. I wore one for 20 minutes to get DS2 some shoes at the weekend, I was ripping it off as soon as I was out of the shop and then we just went straight home.

HarrietOh · 13/07/2020 16:09

Yes - feel like I can't breathe wearing on. I'll stick to online shopping where needed.

You can't ignore a cough just because you were wearing a mask to the supermarket. Your mask isn't going to stop you getting standard coughs and colds in winter - is that what you meant?
cologne4711 · 13/07/2020 16:14

No it wouldn't. And if it stops people from faffing around in shops, so much the better.

MNers who don't live in the UK - is there this much debate over masks where you live? And if not, why are the British so childish about it?

openplankitchen · 13/07/2020 16:14

Yes.

Sadly we won't be going shopping anywhere that we have to wear a mask or queue outside.

I hope this isn't going to be the end of our highstreets for good :(

Underhisi · 13/07/2020 16:14

No because I already wear one but I'm still avoiding it as much as possible because of people not bothering to social distance rather than lack of masks.

PurpleDaisies · 13/07/2020 16:15

Yes. I’ll be doing all shopping online.

tinierclanger · 13/07/2020 16:15

No, I’d be more likely to go.

BoingBoingyBoing · 13/07/2020 16:17

No.

The handwranging from the anti-mask brigade is hilarious though.

"I can't breath through this thin bit of entirely porous cotton!"

Free choice not a thing in your world? If I don't go shopping, what's it got to do with you? Or anyone else?
PersonaNonGarter · 13/07/2020 16:19

Yes, it will put me off. It will put most people off a bit to varying degrees. No more pop to the shops.

Masks aren’t that comfortable so everyone will want their shopping to be completed faster = spend less money. Plus, masks are not friendly, and they change the atmosphere.

Fosler · 13/07/2020 16:23

Yes.
They are very unhealthy. There is a huge amount of bacteria in your nostrils so you would be breathing it out into your mask and breathing it back in again, repeatedly. As someone who suffered an extremely painful sinus infection for months there's no way I'm wearing a mask.

MxEWeatherwax · 13/07/2020 16:23
