If masks are made mandatory in England, will this put you off high street shopping?

@BrowncoatWaffles

Yes - because I wear glasses and have yet to find a mask that doesn't steam them up if I wear them for more than a few minutes. If I wear the mask and not the glasses I won't be able to see anything.

So online shopping only for me for now. But I'm not sure that's a bad thing - and I totally support the introduction of mandatory masks.

Browncoat same here, but there seems to be no accommodation for visual impairment or solution. It's rarely discussed, but a serious concern.
Thirtyrock39 · 14/07/2020 08:34

Wearing glasses- push the mask up higher so it sits inside your specs-stops the steaming up
I've worn masks since the start of lockdown in all shops and felt a bit self conscious as am often the only one - really pleased they will be mandatory

If masks are so important why is it only mandatory from 24th July and why only almost 5 months since start of covid19 in uk? Didn’t govt initially say there was no real benefit to wearing them? Incorrectly fitting masks ( probably most worn by general public tbh) allow fluid particles out of side, behind, above and below when coughing.
Don’t think the govt really know what to do. This is window dressing.

a) People need time to buy them. b) Evidence about the main transmission routes has increased over time, it's now clearer c) Our government has been behind the curve in following that evidence; countries like Vietnam that introduced masks early have had much lower case rates.

Just because the government picked the wrong course before, doesn't mean we have to stubbornly continue down it.

"How will you manage medical appointments?"

People with exemption don't have to wear them at medical appointments.

Other things have been implemented earlier oh maybe it has something due to the summer term in English schools ending by 23rd July

I think you'll find the school term ends on 18th July but yes, cue numerous more threads/debates about how school teachers are being thrown to the wolves by not being allowed to wear PPE, just when we thought we finally had a bit of clarity regards to school arrangements for September.

sleepingpup · 14/07/2020 08:51

Mandatory masks will make me feel BETTER about shopping.

A SAFER environment for everyone in the shop.

For your average person, without extra needs, wearing a mask is not that difficult. And you get used to it.

Just look outside the UK where it is happening already all over the world.

Obviously different areas finish school at different times. My DC finish today. The area next to us finishes on the 24th.

Well, your local school might. It seems unlikely though as that’s a Saturday.

Schools here and many others across the country don’t finish until the 22/23 as the PP correctly stated.

I actually find it bizarre that there are so many people who blithely insist they "can't breathe" while wearing a mask. You might want to get that checked by a doctor, unless you have a medical condition (either physical or mental, and yes I'm including pregnancy).

Studies have shown there are no difference in the amount of oxygen levels you access with or without a mask on. It's the same.

BakedBlossoms · 14/07/2020 08:57

I couldn't teach in a mask though, no way. I don't think that's unreasonable.

Springersrock · 14/07/2020 09:07

Yes, it will put me off.

I’m really claustrophobic and masks make me panic, so I’ll stick to essential stuff in actual shops and do anything else on line

Norugratsatall · 14/07/2020 09:25

Sadly yes. I find them hot and unpleasant (I'm mildly claustrophobic) particularly in warmer weather so will go in next week to get bits and for one final browse and then no more...

That said, I'm not sure footfall will be affected, as those - like me- who decide to stay away, will be offset by those who feel safer now. I hope so anyway as obvs would like high st to survive this.

Badbadbunny · 14/07/2020 11:22

Maybe time to change occupation then. Covid is going to be with us for a long time yet. We all need to get used to the new restrictions and can't avoid going to work/shops etc.

NameChange84 · 14/07/2020 11:28

BakedBlossoms

I can easily teach in a Visor. Is that an option?

BakedBlossoms · 14/07/2020 11:31

I did years ago, thank you!

Teachers will not be wearing PPE.

Teachers don’t have to wear masks. She doesn’t have to change occupations. If they introduce face covering visor is better anyway.

Comefromaway · 14/07/2020 11:56

My dh and his colleagues will be teaching in masks.

epythymy · 14/07/2020 12:53

What's the result of the poll? I'm on the app and it doesn't say and it won't let me log in on browser for some reason

epythymy · 14/07/2020 12:53

Oops wrong thread ignore that!
