Am I OTT or do other people just not care?!

Tonight on social media, I've seen several posts from "friends" (and by friends I mean Facebook friends, people from school who I've not actually seen or spoken to in a long time) who are having parties with absolutely zero social distancing.

One particular person has posted videos of people in her house, easily 20 people.
All doing karaoke, drinking shots, dancing.

Another post from a separate person is a picture being in a pub hugging three girls captioned "missed my besties"

A work colleague posted a picture of her young niece saying she's staying over at her house, again hugging her.

I don't mean to sound like the "fun" police. I know we've all desperately missed our friends and families, but the situation is never going to improve unless we follow the guidelines.

I have a 4 month old DD and I've love nothing more than for her to have a cuddle with my mum and her other grandparents, but I just wouldn't allow it.

I desperately miss my friends, I'd love to have them over and hug them, but I wouldn't do it.

Am I being over the top? Am I right for feeling pissed off at people just not following the rules?

I just feel like it's going to drag things out even longer if people just do as they please 😔

I feel the stark reminder that there have been over 44,000 deaths from Covid should be enough for everyone to have some respect for the dead and those at risk of dying from Covid in the future to follow he guidelines. Gratuitous socialising and leisure activities may cost lives in the future. i can't believe how easily people forget clapping for the NHS and the people who have died. Quite shocking to me.

Shell4429 · 06/07/2020 17:40

My son invited me to join him and my granddaughters for a drink in a pub garden. It was really easy to socially distance but many people, if not the majority, weren’t. They were in groups close together, saying hello and hugging people they hadn’t seen for a while. The pub landlords and staff went to a lot of trouble to make it safe but they may as well not have bothered.

Bizawit · 06/07/2020 17:40

Look at the stats. It’s over. Move on and moan about something else.

sounds like my friends 30th I was at on Saturday night! was fucking brilliant

yeah you are being over the top op

Hi - it’s really interesting. The risk is low for many, but what no one’s really noticed yet is that for a good proportion (5-10%?) of otherwise healthy people the virus wrecks your life for months.

I was blithe about getting it pre lockdown - lots of socialising and shopping. This is the curse for fit, healthy not-elderly adults - your immune system doesn’t know it’s gone and you remain exhausted fighting a phantom illness. (That my non-scientific conclusion!)
Anyway, OP, I’m not sure it matters as long as R remains below 1, and you manage your own risk. But I sure as hell wish I’d tried harder to avoid it back in March 🙄

I am pretty sure it has been noticed as its talked about on mumsnet constantly

And this is why we in lockdown now!
Hi to everyone from Leicester!
Rest of the country will follow!

CambsAlways · 06/07/2020 18:00

Well I’m high risk and I’m not hugging anyone or going in anyone’s house, they come round and I see them in my garden

marcusian · 06/07/2020 18:08

I think its worth remembering that the mortality rate for people who go onto full hospital intubation is c.50%. It can also severely and permanently damage several internal organs.

You ask 2 different questions, YANBU to take care of you and yours. Best not to worry what other people are up to, they have been clearly told, if they still want to take silly risks before anyone has a vaccine is here, thats their CF choice, and nothing you say will make any difference. Remember more of them will defo get ill, so stick to your guns, and feel sorry for rather than angry with them.

This is what shocks me about the people so determined to stick their head in the sand. Leicester is in lockdown, areas of Spain back in lockdown, many parts of America entering into free fall, R in London reported to now be over 1. It's crazy.

A second peak or wave really scares me because I don't see how we can go back into lockdown again. The economy surely wouldn't cope so how on earth will it be managed? Frankly I don't want to have to find out. Are people really incapable of just reigning themselves in and following so slightly inconvenient rules for a time?

I don't see how the R can be accurate when there was just over 300 cases today. Nationwide cases and community transmission are so low at the min...what are they basing the R on?

jwpetal · 06/07/2020 18:16

Every family has to make the decision that is best for their family. To be honest, we met with friends this weekend. We have followed the rules up until this weekend. We all checked to make sure everyone was well. We all made the decision that it was ok to do. Our kids were so happy as were we. It has revived our energy. We wouldn't do it with any other people are now back in our cocoon.

Hearhoovesthinkzebras · 06/07/2020 18:19

I don't know but it was reported over the past few days that R is over 1 in London.

Jeeperscreepers69 · 06/07/2020 18:20

Just discovered we have a new case of corona at the nursing home........ Its been clean for weeks. 2nd wave????

AquaTech · 06/07/2020 18:20

This might sound stupid, but how come the BLM protests didn’t cause a second wave / large spike in cases?

How do you know they haven't? Cases have levelled out, rather than continuing to decline, Leicester is in lockdown, other cities are causing concern. How do you know that isn't caused by the protests or beach goers?

In my mind, the beaches and protests would initially only have caused a small number of infections - would they be significant enough to be picked up? But then if they infected others and then they infected others that's when you would see the big increases in cases but that's what, eight or nine weeks down the line for three generations of transmission?

Timeforredwine · 06/07/2020 18:27

I havent read the full thread just your question. My personal opinion is as yours. If you go on gov.uk and read the statements in full plus fingerprint of each rule, whether the government are right or wrong (and lets be fair they havent been great) people appear to be going about their business without a care as if the pandemic was a dream. I've stuck to everything rigidly so as to protect myself and family. Regardless of how old you are, your health etc as far as I'm concerned there is a nasty virus, one that kills, and it makes my blood boil when I've only been to the supermarket a few times but find other people dont bother with testing, have people round hugging them. I would love to be able to hug family but am taking no chances. I am fully aware of mental health as trained. The government got a lot if it wrong and I have no time for anyone who takes this virus lightly. God help us if there was, God forbid, a war people would be crumbling. It beggars belief.

I thought the cases had dropped off dramatically? Am I missing something? Today they were in 300s, last monday 600s, the monday before 700s. I thought they were reducing.

The Zoe app last week reported that cases had stopped declining. I guess we have to just wait and see which way it goes.

ILoveTotoro · 06/07/2020 18:39

I've got 2 p/t jobs and just gave one up to make sure I can be the designated health and safety person in my family. I no longer trust the government or other people to keep my family safe, so I'll have to do it

LOLOLOLOL where to start with this

They reported that they had levelled off the week before last. Last Thursday they reported another 30% drop.

Two men in a boat.

One's drilling a hole in the floor.

"What are you stressing about?" he yells, when he sees the second man's horrified face. "Fuck's sake – I'm only drilling on my side!"
