Leicester facing full lockdown

According to the BBC www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leicestershire-53206506.
Anyone living there - how do you feel about this? Personally I would feel terribly trapped, almost like I was being punished, like when teacher's used to keep a whole class behind due to the behaviour of a minority.

[quote Chaotic45]@Redolent I don't think anything will stop the likes of that one infected selfish person. But stopping the vast majority would be a huge step in the right direction.

Yes it would be very helpful, I agree. But it’s still a ticking time bomb nonetheless. Someone gets unknowingly infected at a restaurant in Coventry on Saturday night, they go out to the pub the next day, stay the night with their in-laws on Monday (all permitted). Then repeat for one or two other pub goers on Sunday. Before you know, you have another cluster brewing, and it’ll be 2-3 weeks before that shows up in the data. At that point, the virus has raced ahead and you’re playing catch up.

It’s why it’s so hard to keep control of the virus, especially in democratic societies where we enjoy so many freedoms.

Costa is indeed denying the map, however I'm wondering if the exclusion of Blaby in the lockdown is an issue, with a large number of hairdressers and non essential retail in the village I'm wondering if he's trying to get Blaby included to stop people coming in from the city and the surrounding areas.

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 29/06/2020 23:51

Really really shallow non-issue in the grand scheme of things but do you think the coffee shops that had started opening for takeaway will close?

I really like coffee shop coffee. It's the thing I missed most for the first 12 weeks of lockdown and the ones near me only started opening again in the last week or so.

Matt Hancock said all non essential shops to close, if a coffee shop has only just re-opened it obviously wasn't an essential shop so will need to close.

It does seem a bit shallow, yes, to be thinking of yourself rather than the business owner who could be losing her/his livelihood.

I send my best wishes to the vast majority of people in Leicester and its surrounding areas who have been doing the right thing.

I find it staggering that the lockdown announcement is made but without the sort of fundamental detail such as the specific area covered by it. I can completely understand not proving it before the parliamentary statement but surely part of that should have been an announcement along the lines of :

"the specific areas covered are.....and the official map defining this will be published on PHE or wherever website by X time. Links to this will also be available on the website of every local authority in Leicestershire - city council; county council; every district council."

Surely its not rocket science?

boys3 · 29/06/2020 23:58

not providing it even; so staggered I could not even complete a coherent sentence.

OneNewName · 30/06/2020 00:00

I'm really pleased something has been done and hope they do the same here if necessary.

Chaotic45 · 30/06/2020 00:02

An enormous thank you to @everythingthelighttouches for tracking down an MP's official page which confirms that the map of affected areas which is supposedly from PHE is fake!

So I can now confirm that no one has any idea which areas are covered by the restrictions. The government appear to have gone to bed leaving thousands of people in utter chaos having no idea if they should open up, or travel to work tomorrow. What happened to prioritising people's mental health?

I accept it's not possible to have all the answers but the areas affected must be known and the areas required to lock back down must have been decided.

They have also missed the chance to tell huge amounts of people not to attend morning worship before work tomorrow. Perfect!

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 30/06/2020 00:03

Ok @TerrapinStation don't get your knickers in a bunch, I was only asking. If you read back you'll see I've expressed my concerns about business owners on several occasions.

Coffee shops are food outlets and could have stayed open for takeout and delivery throughout the entirety of lockdown but chose not to in most cases while they did fit out and came up with procedures, so I don't think it was a completely unreasonable question.

Sharing this impassioned/interesting comment from Reddit, esp re: factories:

“ Good. I will give my own personal experience where the problem lies within my own community.

  1. Selfishness - People are hiding their symptoms on purpose, "it's only a fever" then they go to work and spread it to 10 people. Nothing gets checked at work. You're lucky if the bosses buy them hand santiser. You're lucky if someone uses a tissue when they sneeze.
  2. Shops - e.g. Shops like Kooners on St Saviours Road - the gap at the queue is at about 40cm, the aisles are about 1m wide, there's one right at the front of the entrance that's about 50cm wide. I wish I had a photo to share.
  3. Factories. Fuck you Boohoo, Fuck you Pretty Little Thing, Fuck you Missguided. These guys sales hit the roof when the lockdown started and guess where they make their clothes? Shitty Leicester factories who have been running at 150% capacity since the lockdown. They have no concept of social distancing. Shut these placed down now.
  4. Schools. So what if a kid gets it they don't get ill do they? Fine but how many especially asian families live together as a unit with grandparents. Stupid to have ever opened them up.”
Chaotic45 · 30/06/2020 00:06

So amongst my friends I have a dentist, a golf club owner, a cafe owner, several shop owners, devout Christians, Muslims, Hindus and Sikhs, cleaners, an optician, teachers- nine of whom know what to do either because their places of work aren't listed or they have no clarity wrt location.

Chaotic45 · 30/06/2020 00:08
  • none not nine!
AgeLikeWine · 30/06/2020 00:14

The lockdown map has now been published. It’s on the Daily Mail website.

The lockdown area is the city of Leicester and its immediately contiguous suburbs. To the North & West of town, the M1 / A46 is the boundary, so Birstall, Glenfield & Beaumont Leys are inside but the Charnwood villages are outside. To the south of town, the boundary is the end of the conurbation south of Oadby & Wigston.

crosseyedMary · 30/06/2020 00:15

Factories who have been running out 150% capacity since the lockdown
For once we are faced with some of the real costs of these cheap clothes 😞

WorstGovtEver · 30/06/2020 00:15

This government is so useless. It's actually terrifying.

Go a little bit further upthread. Read the link i put there about benefit sanctions and then try to do some critical thinking.

TorysSuckRevokeArticle50 · 30/06/2020 00:17

@Chaotic45 I'm keeping an eye on Leicester city council twitter feed in the hopes they'll put something out overnight.

At a guess, golf club, dentists will close

Food/hardware shops would be 'essential' so can stay open
Other shops would be non-essential so closed
Cafes, if they can do takeout/delivery safety MAY be able to stay open

This is just based on the March-June 14th guidance

What I'm finding difficult to grasp is how they'll prevent people going from say Braunstone to Blaby, if Blaby ends up outside the lockdown zone. 10 mins up the road by car or you can walk/bike it down the great central way bike path.

crosseyedMary · 30/06/2020 00:20

people are living in very stressful and precarious situations☹️
we can't expect them to weigh their options the same as those whose lives are more comfortable

HeIenaDove · 30/06/2020 00:21

For once we are faced with some of the real costs of these cheap clothes

Trouble is people on a low income cant afford to buy the more expensive ethical options Its called the cycle of poverty.

Imagine the Hmm from some of the middle class right wingers on here if someone on UC was shopping at Karen Millen or PeopleTree.

GabsAlot · 30/06/2020 00:23

how is this going to work are they going to block all routes in and out-not possible is it

id like to think people will just abide by it but everyone was already fed up of it all

FT ran a piece on labour exploitation in Leicester’s textile factories:

No need for the aggression. I shared a Reddit comment.
HeIenaDove · 30/06/2020 00:24

Benefit sanctions are being reinstated as of this week @Redolent
And many people claiming are IN work. Refuse work/extra hours = sanction.

One major thing that is helping to spread Covid are the past and present Government policies of the past ten years.

Chaotic45 · 30/06/2020 00:25

@AgeLikeWine no map has been published according to our local MP's and councils. The daily mail has unsurprisingly not checked its facts, or somehow got hold of something not realised to us people of Leicester who haven't the foggiest idea what to do.

HeIenaDove · 30/06/2020 00:26

Ah in that case i apologize

Its about what id expect from Reddit.
