Leicester facing full lockdown

According to the BBC www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leicestershire-53206506.
Anyone living there - how do you feel about this? Personally I would feel terribly trapped, almost like I was being punished, like when teacher's used to keep a whole class behind due to the behaviour of a minority.

Near me, a middle aged woman snuck along the back alley at night, visiting vulnerable parents ,having got off the train from London. Nothing to do with ethnicity! Bloody selfish behaviour. All sorts of people gently and quietly doing exactly as they please from Day One.

woodhill · 29/06/2020 18:02

To be fair though if her parents needed her and had nobody else.

Parker231 · 29/06/2020 18:13

Nothing wrong in visiting her parents. She may have been helping with their care, taking shopping or medications. I’ve been doing the same with two sets of elderly neighbours.

Jourdain11 · 29/06/2020 18:52

@iVampire

They can't just announce a sudden lockdown

Yes they can. Whether they do is another matter, but the emergency powers exist.

And if the hope for preventing a second peak is by agile local lockdowns when there are clusters/hotspots, then it is exactly the sort of this we should be seeing (and supporting)

I think it has to be on no notice, to minimise the numbers heading off to second homes, other family etc

Yes, exactly - because that was what happened in north Italy and partly why it got so bad.

I also suspect they considered locking down London earlier than elsewhere and only didn't because they realised they'd delayed too long and lots of people had already gone.

Chaotic45 · 29/06/2020 19:03

@randomer thank you. I find it hard to say this stuff because if misconstrued it cools be taken as a negative against people of these faiths.

It's not meant that way. I'm an atheist but have some understanding of their faith via devout friends, and via attending for weddings and with scout groups. In some ways I'm extremely envious of the community that their faith provides and I'm so many ways it's a positive.

However I really worry that unless the 'powers that be' really begin to understand the issues here they will be unable to effectively stop the spread getting further out of hand. Many of these people literally will not listen to the government, both deliberately because they have no respect or trust in them, and accidentally because they didn't listen to the news or read the papers.

randomer · 29/06/2020 19:21

I can scarcly be bothered but no , the daughter should not have got on a train and traveled hundreds of miles to visit frail relatives. Luckily we have a good scheme run by a local hub, which delivers essentials.

I thought we were supposed to adhere to certain rules. Now I find it is a free for all and people could do as they wished from day one. what a farce.

Chaotic45 · 29/06/2020 19:23

@Jourdain11 it is different now though- because everywhere else is still in some sort of lockdown. So it's harder for the people of Leicester to move out elsewhere as happened in Italy. We also don't tend to have holiday or second homes lined up in the same proportions as those in London might.

IMO many members of close knit communities in Leicester would be very unlikely to go elsewhere as they are very tied to home.

nagynolonger · 29/06/2020 19:29

The younger members of the communities are like all young people they meet up in parks etc. The big difference is they live with grandma and grandad.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 29/06/2020 19:51

It is indeed a farce, and though this particular thread's about Leicester it's not just there - the same applies throughout, whether that's idiots crowding onto beaches, football fans celebrating, folk protesting, a mass rave or something else

I only wish I knew what can be done about it, but almost any suggestion falls flat in the face of those who just won't listen

Toddlerteaplease · 29/06/2020 20:24

@agelikewine, my parents are in Thurmaston. About 1/2 a mile from the city border. I image that you are correct they those 'villages' will also be included.

Chaotic45 · 29/06/2020 20:39

@nagynolonger sorry - I haven't explained properly what I meant by 'elsewhere'. I meant elsewhere as in dashing off to another town to escape a possible local lockdown.

You're absolutely right, in so many cases they do live with grandma and grandpa and possibly grandpas sisters too.....

Chaotic45 · 29/06/2020 20:47

So how are us people supposed to know what has been decided? Do we stay tuned to the news channel? What a kit those without them news channels' ? I'm not sure how everyone can be expected to follow any new rules if they don't know what they are?

danni0509 · 29/06/2020 21:06

Matt Hancock in House of Commons now regarding Leicester locking back down.

confusedandtired99 · 29/06/2020 21:08

Matt Hancock just said children are being particularly affected by this outbreak in Leicester? So he’s also shutting the schools. Does anyone know about that?

danni0509 · 29/06/2020 21:11

I just said the same to my dh regarding the children being particularly affected comment. Need more info on this.

1happyhippie · 29/06/2020 21:14

I’m watching it live on sky news now.
Non essential shops to close, schools to shut, no easing of lockdown this weekend and shielding residents to remain home.

I missed a bit about schools? Just caught Hancock saying something about a significant number of cases in schools? Is this right?

LittleRen · 29/06/2020 21:14

It’s officially locked down...

StealthPolarBear · 29/06/2020 21:15

Stricter lockdown measures for Leicester. I feel this will get out of hand quite quickly

PseudoBadger · 29/06/2020 21:17

He said a significant number of cases in children, or that children were being particularly affected

Keepdistance · 29/06/2020 21:19

I was thinking so if bame people are more affected younger are they then more contagious? Are the kids more contagious?
Or are the gov saying the Leicester kids are more ill?

Someone in a class of 15 with maybe more than 1 contagious person would get more ill

Bodes well for 240 in a bubble.
Why cant we have a cautious government?

Babyroobs · 29/06/2020 21:20

Leicester schools to close on Thursday. My dd has just started back one morning a week on a Wednesday but I probably won't let her go this Wednesday as dh is shielding.
My hairdresser has just spent weeks re-arranging everyone's appointments and now will have to stay closed. It must be so frustrating to put so much work in.

1happyhippie · 29/06/2020 21:20

Thankyou @PseudoBadger
I thought I heard something like that.
Will be interesting to hear a bit more on this.

Whattheduck · 29/06/2020 21:21

He said schools would stay open for children of key workers

Redolent · 29/06/2020 21:21

Kawasaki syndrome affects BAME populations more but not sure this is what’s happening here.

Bubbles of 240 are a ludicrous idea. Especially when the whole idea of a bubble is to mitigate risk and minimise disruption if someone tests positives.

Viviennemary · 29/06/2020 21:21

It does seem a sensible move. But they need to restrict travel and stop people coming in from abroad who have not been tested. Otherwise it's s complete waste of time.
