Leicester facing full lockdown

According to the BBC www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leicestershire-53206506.
Anyone living there - how do you feel about this? Personally I would feel terribly trapped, almost like I was being punished, like when teacher's used to keep a whole class behind due to the behaviour of a minority.

I lived in Leicester for 3 years and live about 10 miles away from the centre and have done since birth. I can't see the people of Leicester taking it lightly and not sure how many will stay as a lot of people commute to London from Leicester. I hope it doesn't reach this area as we have a low amount of infections as the majority of our population are students and have gone home so we haven't had a huge amount of infections.

So why are the press reporting on camping in the hills and people on the beach 'flouting' rules but not people keeping going to places of worship in large groups

Given that the latter spreads the virus and the former not so much

Is it because it might be seen as racist?

I mentioned from personal experience that people I know continued going to ‘unofficial‘ collective prayer at the height of the lockdown. I was attacked and rubbished on here, called a liar etc
Orangeblossom78 · 29/06/2020 16:13

If you even mention anything related on race / faith on here you may be called racist sadly, which leads to lack of discussion.

Cantdecidewhich · 29/06/2020 16:17

I live in Leicester, does anyone know when we are next due an update on the latest decisions please?

okiedokieme · 29/06/2020 16:21

Latest is that pubs, restaurants and hairdressers reopening to be delayed by 2 weeks possibly but council want to see the full information before deciding whether to do this across the city or just in certain areas. Based on the test results by postcode it's pretty localised, what isn't public is what the make up of those testing positive are except they are younger that typically seen. Nobody is suggesting hospital admissions are up. There was a queue at the testing centre a few mins ago.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 29/06/2020 16:22

I think you may have just answered your own question, Orangeblossom

It's absolutely right that officials are sensitive in dealing with cultural matters, but it can also raise issues in dealing with things like this virus, when a little more rigour's necessary

The really sad thing is that they simply can't win. If they go in hard and insist on compliance against the community's wishes they'll instantly be called racist, and if they don't act and more people die they'll be racist again for having "neglected the community"

taptonaria27 · 29/06/2020 16:25

If I lived in Leicester (I don't) I'd be behaving as if we were back in lockdown in order to protect myself and my family.
We did it the first time, set up home working, schooling, food deliveries/ occasion supermarket shopping no hairdressers etc.
It wouldn't be so difficult for us to go back to it for a couple of weeks

okiedokieme · 29/06/2020 16:27

@Orangeblossom78 unfortunately this is the case. People have not locked down in certain parts of Leicester, I see it with my own eyes, even barbers trading openly. The streets are busy currently (I just drove through)

okiedokieme · 29/06/2020 16:30

@NotWantingToOffend

It's only one bit of Leicester apparently, I wouldn't worry. I managed to get the figures for my area and there's been only 1 positive test in 2 weeks and that person was working in Birmingham and catching trains so who knows where she caught it. I'm doing my shopping on the west side!

Orangeblossom78 · 29/06/2020 16:31

Just seen it pointed out on the BBC that if pubs and cafes are open outside but not in the town, then of course that would mean people will go there instead and it would just result in more movement... makes sense.

Orangeblossom78 · 29/06/2020 16:33

So why have the police not stopped that happening (barbers etc)

They came to our communal garden over reports of people gathering and we had to have a sign and to use it separately, so why have they not done something before this I wonder.

Adelais · 29/06/2020 16:36

I live just outside Leicester so not sure if my village will be included in the lockdown, I’m hoping not! Both me and dh work in Belgrave one of the worst affected areas and of course many from the village work In Leicester so not sure how they will decide the boundaries for the area to lockdown.

Dd is supposed to be going back to school next week and tbh I’ll be gutted if she can’t.

rosie39forever · 29/06/2020 16:47

@NotWantingToOffend I think we may live in the same place and my main concern about extending the lockdown in the city is that when the pubs and restaurants open on Saturday we will be inundated with people leaving Leicester to come to our town.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 29/06/2020 16:56

So why have the police not stopped that happening (barbers etc)

What would you have them do though, if people simply won't be told?

Let's suppose someone turns up, soaks up the inevitable accusations of racism but insists the premises are closed anyway

The instant they leave there's every chance the owner will simply re-open ... what then?

Redolent · 29/06/2020 16:57

Yes...way to spread the infection to low risk areas.

Fines should perhaps have been large enough for people not to risk it.
randomer · 29/06/2020 17:02

I find your remarks very sensible and sensitive @Chaotic45

Puzzledandpissedoff · 29/06/2020 17:04

Good idea on the face of it, but again what happens if - as in my own city - it turns out that some communities would attract more fines than others?

Orangeblossom78 · 29/06/2020 17:06

Well I guess fines? The police here are out patrolling and I saw them in a shop just because the owners were checking it 'in case any were opening' - can't imagine any actually opening in the lockdown.

randomer · 29/06/2020 17:06

Its a weird one isn't it " the community". The Muslim Community, The Sikh Community. There must be shades and nuance, as there is everywhere.

nagynolonger · 29/06/2020 17:12

No announcement until later tonight. Wonder why.

EdithWeston · 29/06/2020 17:16

Hancock expected to address the house soon.

My guess is that it'll have to be the whole city or not at all.

With checkpoints for routes in and out (Welsh model) to minimise people just popping over to other nearby towns.

This is what local lockdown means. It's never going to be convenient, it's always going to be hard on businesses, and it's always going to feel unfair to those just inside the zones. And this has been such an important part of how to control the numbers - we all liked it well enough when it was theoretical, and when it looked as if it was the means to hasten the easing of restrictions. Now it's actually real, suddenly the comment changes to how shite and unworkable it is

@PuddleView - the Rutland figures were always a bit of a nonsense, because of no hospital. And I'm not sure they have disaggregated Rutland residents from other counties figures thoroughly.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 29/06/2020 17:17

There must be shades and nuance, as there is everywhere

Indeed there are, and I'm equally sure there'll be countless folk just as horrified at the choices made by some of their own community members. They might even feel some are "letting them down" in attracting criticism upon thoroughly decent people, and they'd be right

Unfortunately those aren't the views held by too many of the small shopkeepers, barbers and all the rest who've simply ignored safety requirements and gone on doing exactly as they please

EdithWeston · 29/06/2020 17:20

Hancock's statement postponed, because there is a Cabinet meeting about to begin (according to SKY). Reason for Cabinet meeting not known, could be Leicester, could be other stuff too. No statements now expected until 9ish

Leicester's mayor has been in Whitehall meetings all afternoon, they said.
