Leicester facing full lockdown

According to the BBC www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leicestershire-53206506.
Anyone living there - how do you feel about this? Personally I would feel terribly trapped, almost like I was being punished, like when teacher's used to keep a whole class behind due to the behaviour of a minority.

It’s nothing to do with behaviour, it’s to do with local infection rates. I’d be fine with local lockdowns for a limited time to get infection rates under control.

Juanmorebeer · 28/06/2020 12:31

I'm not sure yet but seeing as it's been on all major media does that mean it is going to happen? Arrrrrgh.

Redolent · 28/06/2020 12:31

It’s unbelievable that they haven’t acted yet. Information about this started to emerge over a week ago, five schools have since been closed. But apparently 658 positive tests on 16th June isn’t enough and they’re still ‘analysing the data’.

Move quickly and you’ll have to lock down a much smaller area.

Now wait for the rumour mill to start spinning, people to crowd into supermarkets to panic buy, others leaving the city and potentially taking the infection with them..

Ifailed · 28/06/2020 12:31

I get that, apparently centred on some food-processors. Still find the concept oddly creepy, maybe have seen too many 50s SciFi films.

I don't think Leicester is facing "full lockdown", for a start despite saying local lockdowns could be used, government has never said what that looks like or given local councils the power to do it.

There may be some localised closures, that's all. They're not going to stop people travelling in or out. How could they?

Hazelnutlatteplease · 28/06/2020 12:33

Local lockdowns are the price for nationwide freedom.

This is what the local lockdown looked like in Germany ( applies to 350,000 inhabitants, so less than Leicester’s which is just short of half a million):

Schools and kindergartens, bars, fitness studios and museums, which had gradually begun opening their doors again, were forced to close and people are once more limited to meeting up with just one other person outside their household.”

Obviously we haven’t eased as much as Germany but if they’re going to implement other similar rules they should do it asap.

starrynight19 · 28/06/2020 12:35

Councillors on tv this morning saying they don’t have the power to do local lockdowns.
Will be interested to see how this might happen. Hopefully it’s not another one of those things the government say that never actually happen.
Seems bizarre they are still watching what’s happening and not doing anything ‘yet’.

ChipotleBlessing · 28/06/2020 12:35

Of course they’ll stop people travelling in and out. That’s what a lockdown is.

FourTeaFallOut · 28/06/2020 12:35

Absolutely relieved that they dealt proactively with an outbreak and that they weren't arsing around doing fuck all again.

sofato5miles · 28/06/2020 12:36

I have been in a city that locked down for 3 weeks, as in, we couldn't travel to other towns in the area for two weeks then now we can in our 'county' but not outside. There are road blocks. Personally, i think it is sensible. It is about containment and invariably as things improve restrictions are lifted.

UltimateWednesday · 28/06/2020 12:37

I know that's what a lockdown is, which is why I said there won't be one. They're really not going to create a ghetto in Leicester.

roarfeckingroar · 28/06/2020 12:37

Leicester has one of the highest BAME percentages - way over 50% IIRC. Potential link?

Parker231 · 28/06/2020 12:41

The Home Secretary, who does have the powers, has said it is being considered.

HesMyLobster · 28/06/2020 12:41

We're in Leicestershire, but about 16 miles from the city centre.
I'm really hoping the lockdown area will be small enough not to include us (if it happens)
Does anybody know if it's likely to be the whole county or just the city?

Ifailed · 28/06/2020 12:44

If they put road-blocks around Leicester, then that would include the M1 & M69 (just been looking at a map). There are loads of roads in and out of the city, so presumably the military would have to get involved, likewise for footpaths?

It is concerning that there are outbreaks that have led to the closure of several primary schools.

I hope there is proper investigation into the transmission there before schools reopen more fully - especially before secondaries go back as teens become rather more ill with it than smaller children

It looks as if the concern might be that all these hotspots, which are close together, could coalesce into general community spread across the city

UltimateWednesday · 28/06/2020 12:49

Are they going to prevent people who live in Leciester but work elsewhere going to work or vice versa?

FrugiFan · 28/06/2020 12:51

If they're going to lockdown they need to get a bloody move on because the longer it is left, the worse it will get and they will have to lockdown larger area.

The government said they will have local lockdowns where necessary but now that it's actually a possibility they're fannying around and wasting time rather than following through. Useless.

I’m in Leicestershire, too, but my village is closer to Leicester. I would assume lockdown would cover the city, plus the suburbs which are linked to it, eg Birstall, Syston, Oadby, Wigston, Glenfield, Beaumont Leys etc etc. We will soon find out....
MRex · 28/06/2020 12:53

They'll need to use the army, it's the only way of getting tight enough lockdown; if everyone's disregarding distancing in one area despite knowing there's an increase in cases then it's hard to see what else could be done.

feelingverylazytoday · 28/06/2020 12:53

@UltimateWednesday

Probably not if they're keyworkers. If they're non essential workers then presumably they'll have to either work at home or go back on to some kind of emergency short term furlough.
Orangeblossom78 · 28/06/2020 12:54

I thought they had given the power to local mayors- or were going to. Hopefully it is Ok for them

MRex · 28/06/2020 12:55

I thought it was just one area of the city that they've narrowed it all to? The mayor was saying they need ethnicity info, but surely local people already know who's ill if they're mixing so much.

Viviennemary · 28/06/2020 12:55

I think it's just a threat. Those photos of all the people gathering in huge crowds make you wonder how enforceable any of it is.
