Leicester facing full lockdown

According to the BBC www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leicestershire-53206506.
Anyone living there - how do you feel about this? Personally I would feel terribly trapped, almost like I was being punished, like when teacher's used to keep a whole class behind due to the behaviour of a minority.

I'm in a village about 10 miles from Leicestershire, I'm absolutely fuming that a horse fair took place in a nearby village. It was absolutely chaos, no social distancing. Absolute disgrace. I didn't even know it was on until we got caught up in the traffic jam.

How can they lockdown a city when they can't even stop a horse fair.

I'm very pro opening things up, but the few are ruining it for the many.

A mass testing programme focused on Leicester would be beneficial I think. They've added some mobile testing units which works on the basis that people choose proactively to book a test.

I would support a more mandatory approach. I also really really think that some business checks need to take place. We have a large number of factories that have been operating throughout, close working and low paid. There has been a lot of emphasis from the government about making these environments safe but no spot checks to make sure they actually are safe.

From what I’ve read in the press, the difficulties are deciding on the geographic boundaries for any local lockdown. As this would be the first in the UK everyone would be watching to see how effective it is.

Ps it's only one part of the city that's experienced a rise. Where kids are there's no cases according to local councillors

That article says that several schools have shut. More children than adults in schools so chances are that a child has tested positive?

randomer · 28/06/2020 14:05

a horse fair? as in travellers? as in people who travel?

I’m about 5 miles from the centre of Leicester, sort of opposite the area where the outbreak has been .
If we are locked down then we will just have to deal with it. I’ve not been in a shop since lockdown so not much different for me.
However, we have a caravan on the east coast and we’re so looking forward to going there on Saturday for three weeks Grin and will be so disappointed and angry if we can’t.
Who am I angry at? I don’t know, it’s not any one persons fault but I’ve reached a wall now with flat mood from being at home for months.
I’m luckier than many I know but it just feels so desperate and the thought of another lockdown and not seeing one friend is horrible.

iVampire · 28/06/2020 14:08

Except of course that the virus has an incubation period of 14 days, and you won’t test positive until shortly before symptoms (if it is a symptomatic case)

So testing negative on day 2 does not mean you aren’t about to come down with it in the next week

caramac04 · 28/06/2020 14:11

Just read that some cases are much closer to home, only a couple of miles away and in the county not the city.
This makes me more worried about a lockdown.

Frozenfrogs86 · 28/06/2020 14:18

I'm be gutted but I think it's probably a good idea to lockdown quickly and responsively so that these local lock downs are short and don't extend to longer, larger areas.

Babyroobs · 28/06/2020 14:18

Which area is that ? There has been an outbreak at a factory in Wigston.
Babyroobs · 28/06/2020 14:19

Just stocked up on toilet rolls just in case.

ShootsFruitAndLeaves · 28/06/2020 14:25

Leicester has one of the highest BAME percentages - way over 50% IIRC. Potential link?

No it doesn't. It is approx 50% white (50.5% as of 2011). And 'BAME' is a bit daft when Leicester is specifically Indian (28%).

There is no evidence that Indian people or those of other any other races are more likely to catch covid-19, but employment differences will affect things hugely.

Statements like these aren't that helpful:

'Leicester East MP Claudia Webbe has called for a lockdown due to a "perfect storm" of poverty, positive tests and higher ethnic diversity.'

It's likely that poverty spreads the virus easier, but it's positive tests or not that are the determinant for shutting down.

And not necessarily the number of positive tests.

Leicester has what 350,000 people?

Correct measure would be the estimated % of the population that are positive. And then maybe on a local level shut down pubs, workplaces, places of worship, etc.

rosie39forever · 28/06/2020 14:25

I'm about 10 miles from the city, this has been bubbling up for over 10 days with no action taken by the city, county or the government. Leicester city is an overcrowded Petri dish which is going to spill out through the rest of the county rapidly if mandatory testing for everyone and lockdown isn't introduced as soon as possible but there again Boris and his cabinet aren't really know for being proactive so here we go with exponential growth again.

Straycatstrut · 28/06/2020 14:25

I'd probably end up being sectioned. I've only just got my boys back to school, we're all slowly recovering from the mental effects we've all suffered... and they only have 2 weeks left now which makes me want to cry! I know teachers need and deserve their holidays (Sept & leading up to it will be crazy for them too) and I'm planning some lovely TY gifts as the ones at our school have been incredible. I'm clinging onto the hope of more things opening (National parks, swimming pools, climbing walls, playgrounds, sailing clubs, jujitsu etc etc) and their Grandparents being able to help with them. I had a breakdown stuck in with them 24/7 for 3 months by myself. They are so hyper and need constant activity and things to focus on or they fight and go crazy and take it out on me. I can only do so much.

UltimateWednesday · 28/06/2020 14:27

Why would a horse fair be banned? Outdoor markets are allowed.

So relieved I am working from home as my office is bang in the city centre. Even in non covid times there are frequently people spitting all over the place. Leicester city centre is the pits seriously, it's a real eye opener.
ShootsFruitAndLeaves · 28/06/2020 14:27

Except of course that the virus has an incubation period of 14 days, and you won’t test positive until shortly before symptoms (if it is a symptomatic case)

Not true.

If you get the nasal/throat swab or saliva test, you will get a false negative test result:

100% of the time on the day you are exposed to the virus. (There are so few viral particles in your nose or saliva so soon after infection that the test cannot detect them.)
About 40% of the time if you are tested four days after exposure to the virus.
About 20% of the time if you develop symptoms and are tested three days after those symptoms started.

rosie39forever · 28/06/2020 14:30

@Babyroobs quite, although I live in the county I never shop in the City only go if I absolutely have to for a hospital appointment, it's an absolute dirty hole of a place.

randomer · 28/06/2020 14:30

I think Indian is Asian and therefore BAME?

Genuinely no sure but I recall from my time there a lot of people living in very close and real poverty ( not connected to ethnicity)

Orangeblossom78 · 28/06/2020 14:32

Just said on radio it will be based on postcodes

ohthegoats · 28/06/2020 14:32

Hear that? It's all the traffic as people leave Leicester to go and stay with relatives elsewhere.

ShootsFruitAndLeaves · 28/06/2020 14:34

Why would a horse fair be banned

People like complaining about gypsies
