Leicester facing full lockdown

According to the BBC www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-leicestershire-53206506.
Anyone living there - how do you feel about this? Personally I would feel terribly trapped, almost like I was being punished, like when teacher's used to keep a whole class behind due to the behaviour of a minority.

Jesus Christ it’s not rocket science, local outbreaks need to be stamped on before they spread and we end up back where we were in March. The government need to stop dithering and giving the virus more opportunity to spread and lockdown hard in infected areas. I for one in my county would be happy with a hard local lockdown to prevent neighbouring counties from getting infected and the whole country taking one step forward and two steps back. Awful thought.
Without an efficient track and trace system it’s the only way. I’ve gone from feeling optimistic and excited about life starting again to feeling flat. Looking at the US and the fact that Leicester may have to have restrictions brought back in before they were even halfway lifted has brought home the reality that this is far from over. I’m all for the healthy getting back out there and protecting the vulnerable but in reality I don’t think it’s going to be that simple.

Redolent · 28/06/2020 13:29

@Orangeblossom78

Well I suppose they will monitor case numbers day to day and if hospitals are overwhelmed as well, to gauge if and when to call it.
The problem is the exponential growth and the 2 week delay in the feedback loop. By the time cases are reflected in rising hospital admissions you’re kind of screwed.

They should really act asap.

crosseyedMary · 28/06/2020 13:29

It could feel like a punishment because anything where you have to take a loss or a hit can potentially feel like a punishment, it's difficult to get people to voluntarily work together for the common good when they see that the losses are unevenly distributed.
If everyone could work from home and had a nice home with a garden it might be ok but when some people live in very difficult conditions and other people live in more comfortable conditions we don't feel as if we have common ground and it feels unfair, that makes it much harder to accept a loss.

IncrediblySadToo · 28/06/2020 13:30

FMD they've had bloody months to work out how to do this and when to do it.

Every time you think they're as crap as crap can be, they just demonstrate how much crappier they can be!

THeyre going to have to get their shit sorted re localised lockdowns because otherwise we're going to be in one hell of a mess.

MrsExpo · 28/06/2020 13:31

@FrugiFan ... I assume you don't actually live in Leicester?

Try to consider what this situation means to the population of a large city. It's not something which is going to be done easily or lightly. I'm glad it's not me who has to make this decision.

GoldenOmber · 28/06/2020 13:32

@crosseyedMary

One problem is that if there is a threat of lock down and people will try to 'escape' in advance of it
Oh yes, like in Northern Italy. Would not be good.

I would much prefer them to have a plan in place for localised outbreaks and just go with that while they're 'analysing the data' and deciding what to do in situations like this. Otherwise we risk it being a much bigger issue that affects more people for longer.

Toddlerteaplease · 28/06/2020 13:32

The area involved was always going to be higher risk due to the demographics of that area. Very high proportion of Ethnic minorities, in closely packed terraces. And some very deprived areas. Although bordering on very wealthy areas.

Jaxhog · 28/06/2020 13:32

It'll probably be on a 'trust' basis. So it will work as well as all the other 'trust' rules have/are.

Babyroobs · 28/06/2020 13:33

I live just outside the city boundary and it doesn't surprise me. the outbreaks are all centred in areas with high Asian populations, which is basically most of the east side of Leicester. A couple of weeks ago at our local country park which borders one of the affected areas there were huge gatherings of people at the lakeside, lots of multi generational overcrowed housing and relatives always to and fro ing from India and Pakistan . I guess those people would have been quarantined but really people are not sticking to the rules at all. I went to my local Lidl yesterday and it was awful there was a problem with the tills and huge numbers of people queuing, people picking up stuff of the shelves , scrutinising it ( a bottle of squash !! ), then putting it back, numerous people touching the tongs to pick bakery items up, few people even wearing face masks. It caused me such anxiety I won't be going there again, so unsafe. We need a lock down as soon as possible in my opinion.

okiedokieme · 28/06/2020 13:33

I work there, live elsewhere! If they decide on a lockdown are they going to pay my wages?

Ps it's only one part of the city that's experienced a rise. Where kids are there's no cases according to local councillors

This is a very childish response and demonstrates why those in government can't rely on people to behave like adults. It's not about you. Not everything is being done to you.

It's areas of the east side of the city spreading from Evington down to Troon. It will not take much to spread long the soar valley. yesterday there was a huge horse fair at Mountsorrel with hundreds of people gathered who could now be taking it back all over the country for all we know.
Littlepurpleflower · 28/06/2020 13:39

Leicester and Leicestershire had below average covid statistics during the spring. Sadly it looks like we’re catching up.

okiedokieme · 28/06/2020 13:39

@crosseyedMary

There's no legal framework for this. Mayor has assured this

jacks11 · 28/06/2020 13:42

YABU
It’s not punishing you. It’s trying to keep people safe. I’ve no idea if the local situation warrants it, but if it does then I think they do need to do something to control the spread. What is your alternative?

DollyDoneMore · 28/06/2020 13:42

@Orangeblossom78

I thought they had given the power to local mayors- or were going to. Hopefully it is Ok for them
Only a small patchwork of areas have local mayors, so that can’t work.
user69 · 28/06/2020 13:42

Not all those areas are terraced streets or deprived areas, in fact one of them is the wealthiest area in Leicester.

gutentag1 · 28/06/2020 13:44

The article says there is no immediate prospect of a lockdown.

Seems like a slow news day to me, the whole thing is based on one comment from a known idiot.

okiedokieme · 28/06/2020 13:44

@Babyroobs

Different parts of the city have very different demographics. Troon is in the north. All the areas have high amounts of inter generational living and extended families are very close, quite different. I think the answer is to send every resident (including the outlying satellite towns) a test on the same day, and shut everything, including shops (excluding hospital of course) for 48 hours until results are back. Personally I'm not in the city now but obviously kids are worried

LookToTreblesGoingTreblesGone · 28/06/2020 13:44

I'm about 4 miles out of the city centre, my daughter is approximately the same distance but in a different direction.
I've only just started going to talk to her across her garden. I will wait to see if it's the city area or outlying areas too.

BeautifulCrazy · 28/06/2020 13:45

Confused
crosseyedMary · 28/06/2020 13:47

Of course you will feel trapped ....but you will use your intellect and realise that a lockdown is for the long-term good of everyone

Oliversmumsarmy · 28/06/2020 13:48

But what is happening now is the whole of the Uk has been in lockdown since March apart from a few areas who feel that the rules don’t apply to them.

Interesting to understand whether the areas facing lockdown again are the places where SD and lockdown meant nothing.
