Holidays - will you be booking one?

Just wondering what people are intending to do about holidays. When the government announce the air bridges/travel corridors will you be booking a holiday?
Do you think it is wise?

No, we’ve booked the UK. I am worried about travel insurance, plus the uncertainty that foreign travel will go ahead on any given date. We only need a small rise in new cases and all the air bridges will (may?) close, no refund as it’s a known event. I just don’t have enough money to risk losing it.

Lemonmaid · 27/06/2020 11:54

Would love to but circumstances mean it's not possible Sad
Already seeing smug braggy posts on social media from people who have holidays booked.

Chrisinthemorning · 27/06/2020 11:54

I booked Northumberland last week and Somerset today. We normally go abroad twice or three times a year but it doesn’t seem like a good idea this year.
We have an 8 year old and don’t fancy trying to get him to wear a mask which at the moment he doesn’t have to do- travels by car, only goes to school or outdoor play or to see one other family.

HairyFloppins · 27/06/2020 11:55

I have booked a fully refundable ferry and hotel and we are hoping to take our car down to Spain at the end of August. If FCO advice changes or rates go up we will stay at home.

We were meant to be going to the USA in August and I don't think that will be happening this year and I don't fancy flying at the moment anyway.

chocolatviennois · 27/06/2020 12:02

Our holiday to Europe was booked last October and we are now hoping to go on it. Travel is via Brittany ferries with a cabin. Our travel insurance covers covid - as long as FCO restrictions are lifted. Therefore we are awaiting the lifting of travel restrictions to be sure of going.

I would definitely not go anywhere by plane. I think one would be as safe in most parts of Europe as the UK if you can travel by ferry or tunnel to get there. Probably safest to book self catering at this stage. Might be worth looking at places that will be less crowded. Eg. maybe going to the alps and swimming in a lake rather than a crowded Mediterranean beach.

GreyGardens88 · 27/06/2020 12:05

Booked Italy this morning, for August. Only 4 nights though

lifestooshort123 · 27/06/2020 12:08

Booked Spain end August and October. Hotel cancellable up to 2 days before and flights paid via PayPal - they refunded our cancelled flights for June and July with no problems. It's a gamble we're prepared to take.

Piixxiiee · 27/06/2020 12:11

No we dont want to fly at the moment or in the next few weeks.... might stay in uk or might not holiday this year at all under the circumstances.

AgeLikeWine · 27/06/2020 12:11

Absolutely not.

I’m in a vulnerable group due to asthma so I will not be going anywhere near an airport, aircraft, station, train, bar, restaurant, theatre, cinema or any other crowded indoor environment in which social distancing is impossible until this nightmare is over.

Confuzzlediddled · 27/06/2020 12:15

We were supposed to be on a uk holiday 11th July, but as I'm shielding we've had to move it to next year 😢 hoping we can have a weekend away in August once shielding is paused but dh can't get time off work to go for any longer. He's cancelled one weeks holiday from the original July booking but I'm taking both as I'm getting burnt out!

Housewife71 · 27/06/2020 12:16

No, we usually have two holidays, one abroad and one in the UK. This year we are having neither. We don't even know if/how the schools are going back, the shops have only just reopened, people are going crazy - crowding beaches, protesting, stabbing each other......, there might be a second wave, who knows..... We would rather just stay at home.

SoTiredNeedHoliday · 27/06/2020 12:26

I'd love a holiday and we usually have at least two a year but I am nervous that the lockdown will come back or that people moving around so much will mean that kids can't go back to school in September etc.

I know its a balance of 'getting the economies going' and 'covid' but it feels the moving around can't make things any better but might possibly make things a bit worse? Confused

OldEvilOwl · 27/06/2020 12:27

No not this year

BrokenBrit · 27/06/2020 12:28

No, but I am going on a U.K. break.

StarcourtMall · 27/06/2020 12:32

We’ve booked fully refundable eurotunnel tickets and a country cottage in France. We’ll take our own car. Restaurants etc are already open in France and even if they’re not it will be nice to have different scenery for a few days. I haven’t told the kids yet just in case it’s another thing we have to cancel this year.

Piggywaspushed · 27/06/2020 12:33

I find this extraordinarily stressful. We have Spain booked for 8 August, fully paid(as advised by numerous travel experts) and were assuming it would be off and we'd be refunded.

Now, I think our hands will be tied. DH is vulnerable and so we usually get special insurance anyway (which will now exclude all sort of stuff ). I really don't want to go. I don't want to turn up for a 7 am flight 4 hours early. I don't want to have to wear a face mask for an entire flight. DH is also annoyed that we spent ££££££££ and other people now will have spent £, but I am phlegmatic about that bit.

Stamps feet and cries.

bibbitybobbitycats · 27/06/2020 12:34

I'd love a holiday in France, but I think travelling won't be much fun right now and who knows what will and won’t be open once you get to your destination? I don’t fancy a UK holiday either as everywhere will be so crowded. Social distancing and queuing will mar a lot of the enjoyment.

Nowifi · 27/06/2020 12:34

No! Because I've got no money, not because of the virus Grin

AlexaShutUp · 27/06/2020 12:37

No, we won't be going on holiday this year. It's an unnecessary risk and I don't want to waste money on an expensive holiday that we probably wouldn't enjoy that much anyway.

bibbitybobbitycats · 27/06/2020 12:38

Piggywaspushed have you bought travel insurance already? Is there any way you could cancel on medical grounds?

IcedPurple · 27/06/2020 12:38

I'll be busy with work until mid September but am hoping to be able to travel abroad as soon as possible after that.

SoTiredNeedHoliday · 27/06/2020 12:40

piggywaspushed no one could have predicted the length and severity of this situation, the price paid can't be worried about now. Can you not approach the travel provider and request a refund or in the least a delay to the trip until next summer? Sounds like you will be stressed out the whole time you are there.

SoTiredNeedHoliday · 27/06/2020 12:41

AlexaShutUp that is my feeling too, but the rest of the family are desperate to go and seem to be ok with it all......

OP posts:
halcyondays · 27/06/2020 12:42

No, we’ve cancelled our UK holiday, too much aggravation, not worth the risk.

AlexaShutUp · 27/06/2020 12:45

Hmm, that's difficult OP. Thankfully, my family are all on the same page with regard to holidays this year. We'll save the cash and treat ourselves to a nicer one next year!!
