Holidays - will you be booking one?

Just wondering what people are intending to do about holidays. When the government announce the air bridges/travel corridors will you be booking a holiday?
Do you think it is wise?

We're hoping to go on holiday to a country with a much lower rate of infection than the UK. We don't live in the UK, but somewhere with current zero coronavirus, but need to travel via London. I've been working in an airport recently and physical distancing is being observed in the terminal as much as possible. In the plane, I will be sitting next to my own family, and wearing a mask, as will everyone else.

It feels as low risk as it can do in the circumstances, although I would prefer to travel by car but it's not possible at the moment. The journey means also that my children can see their grandparents. Honestly, the only bit that I'm worried about is being in the UK.

chocolatviennois · 04/07/2020 14:12

@UltimateWednesday Grin my holiday was booked last year and it would not be easy to postpone for various reasons not least eldest child leaving home. Have to say we are looking forward to it and will be taking great care with social distancing etc whilst away as we have been here.

Ethelfleda · 04/07/2020 19:49

Yep - Italy in September. Was supposed to go over Easter...

Aragog · 05/07/2020 21:43

18y flies to France with her boyfriend, to visit a friend who lives in SW France next Monday and then we are going by Eurostar the weekend after and will meet her, and the three of us are booked for a fortnight round France following that.

We've decided to just go for it now, but with being sensible whilst away, as we have been here. I'm clinically vulnerable but not shielding and feel that, with sensible precautions, we will be at no greater risk in France than we would be here in England.

We arrived in Barcelona today. Hats off to BA, the whole experience felt hygienic and stress free.

MsTSwift · 06/07/2020 08:04

God I can’t wait for a change of scene!

PomBearsyummy · 06/07/2020 10:13

Not going abroad this year, cancelled holiday back a while back. Very happy that some people are able to get away this year. Should help reduce the demand a little for next year :)

WhiteChocTwix · 06/07/2020 10:18

Go for it @MrsTSwift!
Like I say very happy with BA yesterday and I'm scrupulous with hygiene. I took Dettol wipes to wipe the case handles and our phones. Spare food bags to store used masks. Loads of hand sanitizer. The hotel is fairly quiet, so every other room appears to be occupied on our floor (more social distancing between balconies). Sanitizer everywhere. Expected to wear a mask when walking round indoors but not outdoors. Breakfast was a buffet but they had staff serving guests the food. The room is cleaned to a degree they even seal up the remote control in a clean bag when disinfected! Ate dinner outside by the sea last night, no mask. Everyone's different but I'm not fussed about wearing a mask indoors, everyone is just getting on with it. I'm enjoying the 30c heat and change of scene!

Aragog · 10/07/2020 09:39

Lovely to hear an 'on the scene' post about what it's like.

We are going to France, though me and dh are going via train. Dd is flying though. We have smallish hotels booked, so no big buffet type breakfasts and big resort pools. I don't mind wearing my mask (though have actually bought one of the sports type scarf ones with filter too as they're breathable) for indoor bits, and in transport and will have to wear one all day at the theme park but nice that we don't necessarily need one all the time when outdoor too.

To be honest I'm just looking forward to the change of scenery for a while!

TheAdventuresoftheWishingChair · 10/07/2020 09:47

Yes definitely - I can't wait. It will be fantastic to feel life is a little closer to normal for a bit. I feel safe travelling though I understand why some wouldn't.

Japa · 10/07/2020 11:11

No. We will be staying home and staying safe.

Aragog · 10/07/2020 13:20

Martin Lewis said on his show that if you renew an annual insurance policy your terms will be the same (pre Covid).

I would be careful with this assumption and not rely on it, as it isn't always the case.
My renewal came through yesterday and in big letters on the front it clearly says that Covid is no longer covered.
It. also no longer covered your your airline insolvency and supplier (hotels, car hire, transport etc) insolvency.

jasjas1973 · 10/07/2020 14:10

Martin Lewis is talking rubbish!

I took out an annual policy with Insureandgo in early March, on the 13th March they said they would no longer cover CV and neither would they cover CV if the trip was booked after the 13th March....as they are classing it as a "known event"
i am awaiting a full refund but that is purely down to their insurers to issue, so probably won't get it.

Oh yes, also, no supplier insolvency cover either, unless booked before 13th March.

Companies are making it up as they go along, there is zero consumer protection.

Thecazelets · 10/07/2020 17:25

Yes, my travel insurance renewal came through and the revised policy seemed to cover almost nothing, with anything remotely CV-related excluded. I've cancelled it for now as we're not going to go abroad until October half term at the earliest.

autumnredhead · 10/07/2020 17:26

Off to Ibiza in August. Booked yesterday.

WhiteChocTwix · 10/07/2020 18:19

@Aragog and @autumnredhead I hope you both have great holidays!

I've noticed the hotel staff are changing the sunlounger cushions as soon as anyone leaves the pool. This feels thorough to me. You're now expected to wear a mask out and about in Catalonia, but don't need to wear it when at the pool or beach, or when sat down to eat or drink. The change of scene and the glorious weather are doing us both good!

autumnredhead · 10/07/2020 18:22

@WhiteChocTwix thank you! You enjoy your trip too! I've been on out hotel website and even emailed the hotel directly and I'm really impressed with the plans they have in place.

Torvi · 10/07/2020 18:37

We've just booked to go to Lanzarote next month. We have a holiday home there with our own pool so we don't feel as concerned as we might in a hotel. My parents live out there which is also a factor as I feel quite in touch with what is actually happening there.

Lurchermom · 10/07/2020 18:46

We've rebooked our cancelled holiday to Italy in June next year (same weeks as before) but hoping to do a long weekend to France or Belgium in the autumn some time.

Scarby9 · 10/07/2020 19:00

Booked English holiday cottage for the first week of August on New Year's Eve last year for annual week away with my parents, brother, SIL and friend.
My DB, SIL and I spent ages working out logistics and safety ( I had a thread on here) and decided we could do it, without the friend. But my parents said no because of the journey, which was always the most difficult part.

Resigned to losing the deposit, but then I was talking with friends and have decided that the three of us will go instead. They will bubble as one household for the journey and to share a bathroom, but the house itself is very spacious and we can otherwise distance easily in the property and gardens.. We are going to go out whatever the weather, and enjoy the change of scene.
I am beginning to get excited!

Aragog · 10/07/2020 19:33

Thank you WhiteChocTwix.
Hope your holiday is lovely too.

Ineedtobecalm · 11/07/2020 18:11

We've rolled our eurocamp holiday in France to next year because I'm possibly overly nervous. We're going to the Norfolk Broads instead. Fingers crossed for nice weather. I'm hoping to eat out lots if we get discounts at restaurants. I'm actually really looking forward to it and if it all turns to shit I can drive us all home in a few hours. A lot of the attractions are opening up, but to be honest just a break away with some good books and wine and I'll be happy
