Holidays - will you be booking one?

Just wondering what people are intending to do about holidays. When the government announce the air bridges/travel corridors will you be booking a holiday?
Do you think it is wise?

our foreign holiday at Easter was cancelled. We've booked a UK break instead, in a quiet part of the country where we'll be happy even if we're just doing different walks and enjoying different takeaways. I am keeping an eye on how things look for overseas (our favoured destination is outside of Europe) and will book only if and when restrictions are lifted enough for us still enjoy things.

Woeismethischristmas · 28/06/2020 16:04

Oddly enough Ive had three bookings at my holiday cottage for August today. Suspect its payday, I need a break bookings. All Uk though normally I get a lot of international guests.

Rollergirl11 · 28/06/2020 17:24

We were due to go to Turkey beginning of August. I’d only paid low deposit so we cancelled it. Think it’s definitely possible that it would have been on if we hadn’t with social distancing rules in place which would be no fun in an AI hotel. So I think we’ve dodged a bullet there. Have just booked a weeks stay in a lodge in Devon in August instead. Hopefully we won’t be in a 2nd lockdown and it will go ahead!

Angelonia · 28/06/2020 18:02

We do usually go abroad but not planning to this year. Maybe a few days away in the UK instead (not near the beach!).

HairyToity · 28/06/2020 18:19

We've booked a UK holiday. Everyone I know is either doing UK self catering or forgoing a holiday this year.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 28/06/2020 19:42

We couldn't go on our booked holiday to Turkey last week. So despite not being riff raff or furloughed, I'm keen to book a holiday to Spain at the end of August.

DH is dragging his heels though and isn't too keen.

UmbrellaHat · 28/06/2020 20:27

Am thinking all these UK bookings s really good thing! Let's spend money on our own country. When the Dc were little we mostly had holidays in the UK as no fly and the kids were just as happy. Really think abroad is overrated for little'uns. Yes weather not reliable by children don't seem bothered with that.

goose1964 · 28/06/2020 21:34

We have a "holiday" when we go up from Bristolish to Manchesterish to see my son and his family. It looks like we can't do it for the foreseeable future as we don't drive and trains are going to be a nightmare.

areyoubeingserviced · 28/06/2020 23:03

No- I usually go abroad in August, but I just cannot be bothered this year.

okaasan · 29/06/2020 21:14

Beaches here in Devon were absolutely rammed in the evenings last week - if you go to the beach, you'll be in crowds of people. Dartmoor is better if you go off beaten track

Beatrixpotterspencil · 29/06/2020 21:56

If everyone does a uk holiday, that’ll certainly be the end of any kind of ‘secluded’ or peaceful break.
Seriously there isn’t even enough space for us all. I’d find it more off putting to be honest. I like a bit of room to breathe...

And imagine the fucking queuing.

Nice idea though.

B9008 · 29/06/2020 23:13

Judging by the number of cottages etc available in the UK in August, it’s far from
Selling out and perhaps people just think it’s a bit too soon. I really don’t get the clamour to go abroad this year given the circumstances

CarlaH · 30/06/2020 08:52

Holidays are meant to be relaxing not stressful.

Keeping away from others, wearing masks, worrying about hostility from locals doesn't sound very relaxing to me.

Maybe people abroad might be less hostile but hear they seem anything but welcoming.

zafferana · 30/06/2020 09:34

We are going on a UK holiday in August (booked pre-Covid). If FCO restrictions are lifted though I would go over to France/Belgium/Holland via the Eurotunnel and staying in SC accommodation. As you just sit in your own car on the train I don't see that it's any more risky than staying in the UK.

I wouldn't feel comfortable flying yet. We're debating booking something for the October half-term, but I think we might drive if we do decide to go. Right now, we know nothing about what's going to happen as countries open up. This virus could flare up again worse than before, for all we know. Countries that are opening up could shut down again with little warning. I wouldn't want to be stranded somewhere a flight away from home.

1990shopefulftm · 30/06/2020 09:38

No, I'm pregnant and asthmatic and before all this we were going to take a UK break in august but it's not worth the risk to me now.

pettyprudence · 30/06/2020 19:58

We are going ahead with our campsite holiday in France end of August (booked a caravan last Nov!) - they have confirmed all their facilities are open and we will be self contained anyway. Feel ok about travelling by Ferry as we can head straight to the outside deck. If unable to travel for any reason we will lose all our money as made seperate bookings and our travel insurance excludes anything relating to covid-19 (but it's a very cheap holiday). My only concern is funding a further stay if in the unfortunate event we came down with covid whilst in France and had to self isolate for 14+ days. We could manage it but would be a blow.
Also have a few days away in our friends holiday cottage in Wales (we are also resident in Wales) where we can go for walks straight from the front door, take nice food etc. They will be pretty much the same as our usual family holidays but maybe with face masks to board the ferry and in shops.

UltimateWednesday · 30/06/2020 20:17

I'm not even ready to book a UK holiday. Not because I'm scared of the virus but because everywhere seems so unwelcoming and because with partial opening and restrictions in place it all seems a bit traumatic.

I have planned a walking tour of my home county, which I'm actually really looking forward to. obviously the sun will shine for the duration There's so much about this county I never knew and hopefully the pub beer gardens, at least, will be getting back to normal.

InOutofmymind · 30/06/2020 20:24

Was going to wait until next year to go abroad but i think we will be hit with a very bad round of new CV infections this winter/spring so all overseas travel will be banned again, i hope not but i cannot see how it wont happen?

So looking to go to Spain end of September, everything is already paid for, just need to re book the hotel 7 flights.

Pootle40 · 30/06/2020 20:26

@puffinkoala

We are going to Jersey. It looks like one test on arrival-results in 12 hours, max 24 hours - strong advice not to socialise until results. Only over 11 to be tested. No further tests.

We figure we unpack, have dinner in the hotel, go for a walk and expect the results by the time we have breakfast the following day if we arrive at 3pm.

Definitely more relaxed than was previously suggested.

tigerbear · 01/07/2020 00:29

I was supposed to have my honeymoon in late August in Italy. Our wedding is cancelled, but we’ve decided to go on the honeymoon as a holiday instead. We’d cancelled our accommodation at the start of lockdown, so had to rebook. Very little available on AirbnB - so many places already fully booked for whole of August.
I spoke to a business contact in Florence today, and he said that everyone there is wearing masks.
Now I’m kind of beginning to regret it - wearing a mask in high temperatures isn’t very appealing!

RufustheRowlingReindeer · 01/07/2020 10:27

We booked ages ago to go to greece at the end of September

I wouldn’t book a holiday but i will go on the pre booked one if i can

Aragog · 01/07/2020 10:49

Possibly. We are supposed to be away on the 18 July. We were supposed to be doing a Lang haul trip to the us and Canada, but that is obviously off the cards

Depending on the air bridge news we may go to France for a few days.
18 y ddwas already supposed to be in France with a small group of friends visiting a friend who now lives over there in about 10 days time. The idea was to meet her over in France and the three of us enjoy a break together.

If I am due to return to school full time and dd go off to university in September I'd like to have a family break together if we can. We may consider driving as it would feel safer perhaps, though I am fairly confident flights are deemed relatively safe. And a short flight to Paris with a mask wouldn't be an issue in terms of mask wearing.

But we need to look more into. Our current travel insurance covers us still for general health and medical needs, though I suspect Covid will bot be covered as we would be booking after lockdown.

Aragog · 01/07/2020 10:51

I don't actually think spending a few days in France will be any less safe than a few days elsewhere in the U.K. to be honest.
Only difference really is the travel - and that can be sorted fairly safely I think.

lockdownalli · 01/07/2020 17:11

When are we getting the damn go ahead???!!!!

PersonaNonGarter · 01/07/2020 17:37

What is the hold up with these announcements? Are other countries saying they don’t want us because Leicester?
