Holidays - will you be booking one?

Just wondering what people are intending to do about holidays. When the government announce the air bridges/travel corridors will you be booking a holiday?
Do you think it is wise?

@BarefootHippieChick

icedpurple I know it's not true of every country, but there are plenty of countries where not wearing a mask literally means you won't be allowed in, shops, restaurants, public transport etc. Over here we've never been encouraged to wear them. I'm not saying they're foolproof, but they will certainly help.
Compulsory mask wearing on buses and tubes in london. I was on both yesterday. Everyone was wearing a mask and socially istancing
sashagabadon · 28/06/2020 09:32

@BarefootHippieChick

Masks are now mandatory on all public transport in England

Yes true - doesn't mean everyone is wearing one though unfortunately. And no, they actually won't be refused even without one.

Yes they will in london and yes everyone was wearing a mask yesterday when i was on 4 different tube journeys and 2 buses. Everyone was socially distanced too . Quite a few wearing masks walking slong streets too. I didn't and took mine off. People do comply with the rules in my experience . No need to be so pessimistic abour your fellow citizens

Have got 2 European holidays and 1 in Asia ... not sure I can squeeze anymore :)

Ps also booked another one in the uk.

Never been afraid of the virus so only fco could stop me

SoTiredNeedHoliday · 28/06/2020 09:49

GaDDay Really July 2021 Sad we were hoping to come for a trip prior to then. But you guys have done well with containing and almost eliminating the virus in the country so I guess its not a bad thing....

We were very lucky as had 3 weeks in Australia visiting family in January. Feel sad for our other UK family members as they had plans to visit in August and that's now not possible. They are going to book a holiday abroad in Europe instead, which I can completely understand.

I feel we've been lucky to get our holiday and now happy to stay at home. Depending on progress with keeping the virus in check we might book a self catering cottage in UK where we can keep ourselves to ourselves late September.

SoTiredNeedHoliday · 28/06/2020 09:50

MsTSwift do you do interrailing with kids in tow? How does that work for you ugys? Do the kids like it?

OP posts:
Parkmama · 28/06/2020 09:52

Nah decided that 2020 is the year for staying at home. Hopefully in 2021

SpeedofaSloth · 28/06/2020 09:53

No, it seems like too much hassle this year TBH.
We usually hire a cottage for a week in the UK somewhere but we are thinking of doing some day trips instead.

KenDodd · 28/06/2020 09:54

Maybe.
We were supposed to go to america at Easter but that was cancelled, I'm glad, I wouldn't have wanted to go then.

If we do book somewhere it would be very, very short notice, like leaving the next day. The situation could change so quickly that even booking a few weeks ahead looks risky.

SoTiredNeedHoliday · 28/06/2020 09:55

EasterIssland don't you worry about quarantine periods being imposed? Or getting very unwell where your insurance might not cover for Covid and you having to pay out of your own pocket for healthcare? Especially where you might not be able to fly back if you have a temperature etc?

I don't think it's about being afraid of the virus at all, I think it is making sure you can be treated if you get it and also making sure you are taking all the precautions to limit the spread (i.e not flying with any symptoms etc)

OP posts:
Movinghouseatlast · 28/06/2020 09:56

I think it is too risky. I'm desperate to go to Greece though.

I would also feel a bit guilty as my wages have been paid by the government! Also, if there were to be a second lockdown we would need the £3k the holiday would cost us.

Billiemate · 28/06/2020 10:02

Our abroad holiday was cancelled.

We've now booked in the UK. I'd love to go away, but still feel the risk is too high. I don't think a hotel stay would be safe at all and the only possibility would a villa, but even then the flight is risky...

VoyageInTheDark · 28/06/2020 10:10

No. Had to cancel our uk holiday this year and lost money and it still seems too risky to book anything at the moment. We usually have a uk break in the autumn as well but things could be worse again by then so I think we'll wait til next year to book anything.

EasterIssland · 28/06/2020 10:59

@SoTiredNeedHoliday If there is quarantine then holiday wouldn’t be viable hence we’d move it but right now there are no quarantines. I don’t mind in the uk as I can wfh. Also I’ve insurance bought in January which would cover me. However Dh doesn’t have insurance as his renews in August and Columbus doesn’t cover Corona for new insurances so I’ve searched and there are Insurances that would cover you

Bubbletrouble43 · 28/06/2020 11:09

@sashagabadon
Yes in London the mask wearing on buses is being enforced, my Dd who lives there tells me. However I'm in Cornwall and the bus that passes my house multiple times a day has many people without masks on it that I can see, in fact the majority. They aren't crowded buses though, this is a rural area. There is only ever a dozen ish people on the entire bus, all well spaced out. Not sure if that is why?

MsTSwift · 28/06/2020 11:13

Sotired this was to be our first trip so cannot report back! Kids 14 and 12 and quite grown up so they were well up for it. Doing an amended version of the trip by road with lots of stops.

Hopingforsummer1 · 28/06/2020 11:20

We would have probably risked it if we didn't have children (great discounts at the moment!) but the experience sounds unpleasant and stressful for families with young children. We've booked a UK holiday and we're really looking forward to it.

Tootytata · 28/06/2020 11:41

Lemons1571

Martin Lewis said on his show that if you renew an annual insurance policy your terms will be the same (pre Covid). If you terminate and buy a new policy then Covid will not be covered.

EasterIssland · 28/06/2020 11:50

@Tootytata Columbus will not cover you post covid when you renew your policy they won’t cover you if you do it post March. That’s why I’m covered (renewed in jan) but not my husband who was to renew on August.

But there are other companies which I’ve seen that will cover new policies

AlphaJura · 28/06/2020 11:52

No. We went to Corfu last year with a baby and 2 older dcs. It was enjoyable but the travelling was a bit stressful. Before covid I had decided I was going to book anything this year. Glad I didn't! If I had booked something, I would be hoping we could still go but just going to leave it for this year now.

I've thought about booking ahead for a uk break next year as would have longer to pay it off but still nervous in case we have a resurgence of the virus in the winter which affects it.

SoTiredNeedHoliday · 28/06/2020 13:53

Seems like the majority of people on this thread are not booking trips and if they do will do it very last minute..... BBC though reports that bookings are soaring now the air bridges are to be opened.
Wonder who's going and where?

I could not even think of going to a hotel or big apartment complex - would the pools even be open? I could only consider a private villa with private pool....

Just booked self catering cottage in remote part of Scotland...

SneakersandSocks · 28/06/2020 15:47

No, even if it’s safe to go places etc, everywhere in the U.K. is going to be packed ( which spoils it for me) and going abroad , I just feel we wouldn’t enjoy it or be able to relax as much especially with places still having certain restrictions. We are waiting till next year so we can fully enjoy it.

Hollyhead · 28/06/2020 15:57

Hoping to book something for late July, hopefully Greece but maybe Ibiza. Been browsing Jet2, hotels are super cheap considering it’s school holidays!

MistyMinge2 · 28/06/2020 15:58

We missed out on a self-catering cottage in Devon in May. As much as I'd like to rebook, I've ruled this year out. We have booked a campsite for late August, but won't lose any money if that has to be cancelled. Aside from covid, I'm concerned that UK coast is going to be heaving and will take away any enjoyment. Being stuck in traffic jams, unable to park etc puts me off.
