Anyone else think our reprieve might be short lived?

The briefing just seemed so, abrupt today. Suddenly it’s ‘the last ever briefing’, most things are allowed to open up next week, keep your distance, and then a “right we’re off good luck” sort of exit. While there’s still hundreds of deaths a week.

Seems a bit premature - I would’ve thought they would at least do a weekly briefing. I can’t decide if they think taking the briefings off the air will be “out of sight out of mind”, and people will chill out and start spending and going out again. Or whether they’ve run out of steam and need a break before the autumn colds season descends. Whitty seemed sure this wasn’t going anywhere and we’re in for a year plus of this. What do you think?

@Angelil

I'm not saying that it's all that high in terms of the whole population, but the attitude here is very different to other countries, where they react strongly to very small numbers of new cases and take action to nip it in the bud.

I'm thinking of South Korea in this case. They didn't even have to do a lockdown (although schools were closed), because they did a proper test and trace response to it.In this country, that just didn't happen, and it's still not being done.

I'm concerned about pubs in particular, as enforcing social distancing will be very difficult, especially with alcohol being a factor. I'm not so concerned about cinemas and restaurants, as social distancing can be managed in those environments.

I hate to think there could be a second wave and another lockdown. My DDs (11 and 8) have been badly impacted by this lockdown and really need to be back in school full-time in September.

I wonder where the 1000 infections are coming from.
I doubt they are spread evenly across the country

More detailed information would be helpful.
Then people would be able to monitor their behaviour in those areas.

Mittens030869 · 26/06/2020 08:56

@Oliversmumsarmy That would really help. It's what happens in other countries as well. I'd have a lot more confident about everything going back to normal (because we really need to, I know that), if I could believe this government knows what they're doing. But I really don't think they do.

Oliversmumsarmy · 26/06/2020 10:53

It would help if we knew that there was no cases in Solihull but 35 cases in Sutton Coldfield and 250 cases in Oldham

Even down to areas within towns.

There must be this information somewhere in order to come up with the UK figure

MonkeyToesOfDoom · 26/06/2020 10:59

Wonder how many of those Bournemouth beach goers yesterday will end up I'll or passing it on to others?
Looked mental to me. Idiots.
Multiply that by every beach in England, can only conclude the British mindset is "fuck everyone else"

EarlGreywithLemon · 26/06/2020 11:09

So much so that Chris Witty was moved to tweet about the beach goers yesterday.

HesterShaw1 · 26/06/2020 11:28

It wasn't every beach in England though (or Scotland, or Wales, or Northern Ireland). Many beaches round here had hardly anyone on them

It is back to the same policy we had in Feb/early March which was ‘Hope for the best’.
The positive this time is that the hospitals are empty because most other stuff is cancelled and not happening. (Not a positive if you actually need something doing).

Anyone watch the Independent SAGE weekly review streamed live on YouTube? Really good. There was concern by many members that while since April numbers of cases and deaths have reduced, thats started to kevel out in last 2 week. So opening up lots and reducing distances increases risk a fair bit. They were sort of saying pubs and restaurants where no-one will be wearing a mask provides biggest risk...

Basically, we're not back to normal, keep your distance (ideally 2m), keep washing your hands and stay outside with others.

Derbygerbil · 26/06/2020 19:36

@Oliversmumsarmy

You can get new cases by area and by date here if you’re prepared to do some Excel manipulation....

However it only shows “pillar 1” tests (those done in hospital or health settings) not “pillar 2” community tests. These account for about 25-30% of total cases at the moment. Also, I was hearing yesterday that testing is reckoned to pick up 30% of cases or so (3,000 estimated new infections versus 1,000 positive tests per day) so multiple the number by 10 and that’s (very roughly as there may more or fewer community or unidentified cases) the number of new cases in your area.

My area (Suffolk) looks very good indeed with no “pillar 1” cases at all last week! Other places are rather different. Ashford (Kent) and Bedford stick out. It’s a very patchy picture across the U.K. now.

I noticed today while shopping in the same place i did last week, that other customers were now not bothering with social distancing.. I nearly lost it on a couple of occasions, wtf?
I'm in West Wales, we're behind England in the lockdown lifting, so god knows what these customers thought had changed! or maybe they just didn't give a monkeys..

Pity he didnt speak up during one of the daily briefings like Van Tam did.
