Anyone else think our reprieve might be short lived?

The briefing just seemed so, abrupt today. Suddenly it’s ‘the last ever briefing’, most things are allowed to open up next week, keep your distance, and then a “right we’re off good luck” sort of exit. While there’s still hundreds of deaths a week.

Seems a bit premature - I would’ve thought they would at least do a weekly briefing. I can’t decide if they think taking the briefings off the air will be “out of sight out of mind”, and people will chill out and start spending and going out again. Or whether they’ve run out of steam and need a break before the autumn colds season descends. Whitty seemed sure this wasn’t going anywhere and we’re in for a year plus of this. What do you think?

What do you want them to carry on saying? Until there is new news then there is no need for it, and they can carry on running the country!

Sunshinegirl82 · 24/06/2020 10:11

I’m optimistic and I remain optimistic! 40 million doses of the Oxford vaccine have been ordered and are expected to be delivered by October (assuming it works). I see no reason why the government would sit on 40 million doses of the vaccine and 3 months seems a reasonable time frame to vaccinate the most vulnerable (not everyone but those most at risk).

I accept it might not happen but I hope it does and I think there is a chance that it will.

ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia · 24/06/2020 10:16

I know plenty of doctors and surgeons with a few in my extended family and none believe there will ever be any vaccine or cure for Covid! Never was with previous coronavirus SARS or MERS or countless other avian flus as seemingly pie in the sky wishful thinking of any actual effective medical intervention!

Most of the Covid “news” is borderline spin to keep sprits up!

Possibly reason why UK are world leading in the fatalities count is because people here don’t care and never wear PPE nor follow any government guidelines strictly. Seems like 50-60k Covid fatalities is perfectly acceptable here as ok to save and protect the NHS but lose the “care homes”! And now Bojo is marrying his latest squeeze and catching up on fatherhood and hols presumably while Brexshit is forgotten about.

Sunshinegirl82 · 24/06/2020 10:36

I’m sorry but I find it incredibly hard to believe that any doctor is spouting that there is no possibility of a vaccine or cure! They must have very little faith in their research colleagues.

There are working coronavirus vaccines for animals, they have been around for years. A MERS vaccine is in clinical trials in the Middle East. We have already made progress on identifying treatments and that’s only by repurposing existing drugs. The advances made in the treatment of HIV for example show the sort of difference that can be made with drug treatments. We are only 6 months into this!

I can understand caution but a blanket “no hope is possible” seems excessive!

Mittens030869 · 24/06/2020 10:41

The lives of Britains, my friends, have now become very cheap indeed in comparison to the lives of South Koreans.

^This. It makes me very sad. It's very much an 'I'm all right, Jack' attitude, as COVID-19 only affects the elderly and those with underlying health problems, and sadly our lives don't matter.

NoraEphronsneck · 24/06/2020 10:41

I think the talk of local lockdowns as required means they're trying to pass off any future lockdowns as implemented by the local a

Oblomov20 · 24/06/2020 10:42

I haven't watched for ages. But am staggered that they haven't dropped down to a weekly meeting.

NoraEphronsneck · 24/06/2020 10:44

Sorry posted too soon due to bad signal.

I think they want local authorities to take them flak for any future local lockdowns that may be necessary rather than the government itself. So that no one can complain to them.

Second wave coming late August/early September I think - which will then put the schools back into more turmoil.

ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia · 24/06/2020 10:50

I would love to be proved wrong!

Not a gambling type but would not bet on it anytime soon. Not before the next big medical pandemic in any case. Aren’t medics still learning on the job on Covid? In other words more is unknown than known scientifically?

Possibly medics are advised to be Uber precautious in unrealistic expectations? There will eventually be some sort of assessment/public inquiry or litigation for the potential gross medical mismanagement of “care homes” - so possibly this may have an impact?

HollyBollyBooBoo · 24/06/2020 10:52

Yeah crazy times. Our business is already prepping for the second wave (which apparently always happens in pandemics) from October onwards. The NHS' ability to deal with the second wave will be severely compromised compared to the first wave because it will already be stretched due to the natural winter increase in requirements for its services.

ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia · 24/06/2020 10:52

Above comment in reply to Sunshinegirl82! Super account name by the way - nice and optimistic!

FrugiFan · 24/06/2020 10:53

But we’re very out of sight out of mind in the UK (no one even mentions Cummings now)
Because the Cummings "saga" was weeks ago and isnt ongoing. What would be the point of people keep going on and on about him? We know he was wrong, the government have said their piece, move on.

I dont think we will have the issues of "out of sight out of mind". Although we wont have the daily briefing there will be daily reminders that things are not normal - signs up all over the place, stickers and markers for social distancing, queuing and/or pre booking everything.

FrugiFan · 24/06/2020 10:56

Our business is already prepping for the second wave
Of course businesses are preparing for a potential second wave, it would be stupid not to. However this isnt proof that a second wave will definitely occur. I worked in a school and we had to have a whole protocol in case or terrorist attack or armed person entering the school. We didnt think it was likely to happen, but had the stuff in place just in case. Second wave prep is a good idea just in case, but people spouting it as evidence that there will be a second wave is just silly.

MsMonkey · 24/06/2020 10:58

We still have over 300,000 cases and over 1000 new per day, clearly we aren't even done with the first wave yet.

ChavvySexPond · 24/06/2020 11:11

I'd like an accreditation scheme for people who take coronavirus seriously and do all they can to avoid infecting themselves and others and some way of identifying those who aren't careful or conscientious about mixing and social distancing and go to the pub etc so I can keep them away from my grandparents. Do what you like but wear a red badge so we know to avoid you kind of thing.

Oliversmumsarmy · 24/06/2020 11:14

Personally I thought this was the 2nd wave.

I believe the first wave was beginning of December-end of January then there was a lull and then it returned with a vengeance

I think that ordinarily our figures would have gone down and we would have a bit of a spike when the weather turned bad.

The protests might not have helped. We won’t know the effects on the figures till end of June/beginning of July

I think giving out blanket figures on the whole country or by county isn’t the way to go. I think there are pockets of people whose actions are spreading the disease.
I was on a thread where someone from Liverpool was saying that the pubs hadn’t shut. The North West is one of the worse affected areas

I think we need to target these areas to really bring this virus under control

I feel like we are all taking precautions and probably live in areas where there are no cases but for a few the rules don’t apply

Never was with previous coronavirus SARS or MERS or countless other avian flus as seemingly pie in the sky wishful thinking of any actual effective medical intervention!

If these 'doctors' have any clue they'll know that Covid isn't an avian flu and that the reason there is no vaccine for SARS is because it's not needed. It more or less burned itself out back in 2003, so why spend millions researching a vaccine for an almost non-existant disease?

The actual experts - not random 'doctors' - appear to be confident that one or more vaccines will be available reasonably soon.

HairyFloppins · 24/06/2020 11:22

It's amazing the amount of doctors and nurses people know on here.

After a long 12 hour shift of people dropping like flies they then phone mumsnetters and fill them with doom and dread.

ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia · 24/06/2020 11:30

@ IcedPurple

Thank you for the above comment. I am not a doctor nor in any related scientific field but simply posted comments on how so many illnesses and diseases have yet to find a cure and I am guessing there may not be one for Covid too? Perhaps some helpful medical interventions but no cure. This is also partly because of all the false hope stories given by so many political elites here and in many overseas nations already and yet just like tracking apps fiasco nothing seems realistic or believable.

Would be fantastic to be proved wrong and if so which pharma stocks are ripe for speculation?

IcedPurple · 24/06/2020 11:34

A vaccine is not a cure though.

There are about 100 vaccine projects in development and those involved are confident that one if not several will be available soon, possibly as early as October.

Would be fantastic to be proved wrong and if so which pharma stocks are ripe for speculation?

Why not ask one of your 'doctors'?

FrugiFan · 24/06/2020 11:36

We still have over 300,000 cases
We have had 300,000 cases in total over the last few months. They dont count people who have recovered.

Anyone else think our reprieve might be short lived?
RightIsRight · 24/06/2020 11:37

@thewheelsonthebus23

Why are people being so negative already? Sad
It’s the left wing way...
FrugiFan · 24/06/2020 11:38

I know plenty of doctors and surgeons with a few in my extended family and none believe there will ever be any vaccine or cure for Covid
So what do they suggest we do? Live our lives in fear in lockdown forever? Or start living our lives, take reasonable precautions, and accept that there is one more way for us to die now - alongside countless other ways.

ResIpsaLoquiturInterAlia · 24/06/2020 11:40

Your lecture is noted - just what the doctor ordered!

Please dispense a batch when available! I will relieve you of some.

The daily briefing was becoming a ridiculous farce tbf. Like some strange ritual..

Politician does statement, shows the graphs or asks the scientist to read out the info on graph.
Public asks a question.
Politician says it's a really good question, doesn't answer it.
Another public question read out by politician.
Politician says it's a really good question, doesn't answer it.
BBC asks a question.
Politician doesn't answer it and instead repeats earlier statement.
BBC follows up. Politician makes another statement which doesn't answer follow up question either.
ITV asks the same question as BBC in a slightly different way.
Politician doesn't answer it and instead repeats earlier statement.
Repeat the above for Daily Mail, Telegraph, Buzz Feed, Smash Hits, Hull Daily Mail etc.
Everyone goes home.

No journalist can really get a decent line on the above so the news bulletins usually refer back to something more interesting that someone said earlier in the day anyway.

Repeat the next day.

Pointless.
