Anyone else think our reprieve might be short lived?

The briefing just seemed so, abrupt today. Suddenly it’s ‘the last ever briefing’, most things are allowed to open up next week, keep your distance, and then a “right we’re off good luck” sort of exit. While there’s still hundreds of deaths a week.

Seems a bit premature - I would’ve thought they would at least do a weekly briefing. I can’t decide if they think taking the briefings off the air will be “out of sight out of mind”, and people will chill out and start spending and going out again. Or whether they’ve run out of steam and need a break before the autumn colds season descends. Whitty seemed sure this wasn’t going anywhere and we’re in for a year plus of this. What do you think?

Why are people being so negative already? Sad

BBCONEANDTWO · 23/06/2020 22:16

I think they are not having daily briefs because there's not much more they can tell us and you can go online and see the number of cases etc. I also don't think there will be another large peak, I think the figures are going down and if everyone carries on being sensible with the SD we won't get the large numbers again. (I'm trying my best to be optimistic because it's bad to keep being negative all the time).

BunsyGirl · 23/06/2020 22:18

For the people complaining about lockdown ending, note that the number of children in care has gone up by nearly 50% over the course of lockdown. Have a long, hard think about that.

ScorpionQueen · 23/06/2020 22:19

How can we expect them to do daily briefings? They'll all be on holiday!

slimecentury · 23/06/2020 22:20

@BunsyGirl omg where is that figure from? That is truly shocking. The lockdown has opened my eyes up to the fact that schools do not provide education.

slimecentury · 23/06/2020 22:20

Do not JUST provide education

HuckfromScandal · 23/06/2020 22:21

It’s “doing a trump”
Let’s just move on and ignore.

Or
To me it feels a bit like the final scene in blackadder, where we are all being sent into the abyss...

rc22 · 23/06/2020 22:26

He did say they would do briefings when they had something to announce.

GabsAlot · 23/06/2020 22:27

when they have major announcements they'll do a briefing theres no point right now in every day

EarlGreywithLemon · 23/06/2020 22:32

Yep. South Korea really does have a world beating track and trace and is worried about a few tens of infections a day. We’re on a few thousands, our system isn’t fully functioning, and we’re opening up everything as fast as we can. Enough said.
I do wonder if the scientists are still willing to do briefings?

HannahStern · 23/06/2020 22:33

Boris Johnson doesn't believe there will be a second wave of infections this Autumn.

The devious bastard knows we will not even be out of the first wave in the Autumn as 280 new deaths were in the UK today, only 109 of these are historical.

SecularPanic · 23/06/2020 22:33

Last daily briefing. There will be others when necessary.

BunsyGirl · 23/06/2020 22:34

@slimecentury It was on the ITV news this evening. There’s also an article in the Guardian about it.

TheresABearInThere · 23/06/2020 22:35

Yes there will be a second wave. It was only a month ago they were predicting another 100,000 deaths in the USA by September and the UK is not levelling off enough to avoid a second wave.

DuineArBith · 23/06/2020 22:36

280 deaths today.

If 280 people died in a rail crash or a terrorist attack, it would be banner headlines, they'd be calling cabinet meetings, they might well convene Cobra, there's be a major inquiry. But, because it's Covid 19, it's all become boringly routine, even a cause for celebration that it's not worse.

These people baffle me.

Itwasnoaccident9786756453 · 23/06/2020 22:37

Hard to see how it can be anything but short-lived. Nothing really significant has changed about treatments and out of lockdown conditions, test track and trace were all we had to keep local outbreaks localised and not a pandemic. That's why having it was a condition of easing lockdown. Doubtful if we ever got the numbers low enough for it to work anyway but we don't have it. The UK reminds me of a terminal cancer patient who knows deep down that time is limited but they're going to make the best of it. We could get lucky, we could get a vaccine, we could get a very effective treatment. I pray we do.

strugglingwithdeciding · 23/06/2020 22:38

We dont need a daily briefing now just ones when things change
We are just opening things aa most of europe has and he clearly said anything can be reversed both locally and nationally
We have to start trying to open things , no economy , no nhs etc

YukoandHiro · 23/06/2020 22:38

Yeah it's mental. We've decided to bubble with just one other household (family) and neither will be seeing anyone else or doing anything else. And if we do (eg a dentist appt) then we'll leave it 2 weeks before seeing each other again

strugglingwithdeciding · 23/06/2020 22:41

@yuko do you not have to go to work then , lucky you

ineedaholidaynow · 23/06/2020 22:41

@BunsyGirl I don't think that is quite correct, the number of referrals has gone up 50%, not the total number of children in care.

Still horrific.

HannahStern · 23/06/2020 22:43

In South Korea (population: 52 million), officials are very worried that they are experiencing a 'second wave' as 17 new infections were recorded today.

Boris Johnson doesn't believe there will be a second wave of infections here in Britain. Only 280 new deaths (of which only 109 are historical) were recorded today.

The lives of Britains, my friends, have now become very cheap indeed in comparison to the lives of South Koreans.

SunflowerProsecco · 23/06/2020 22:43

Still 1000 new infections a day.
What makes me sad is the attitude on MN that it's all about the individual. No consideration towards others outside their own family; that vulnerable lives that will be lost are just one of those things as it's more important to get back to how it was before.

BanditoShipman · 23/06/2020 22:43

Has anybody else heard this? Saw on CNN today a man (Dr?) saying that A. Even asymptomatic cases can be left with lung damage (up to 60% of people have damage in one lung a lower percentage have damage in both lungs) and B. That they’ve done ‘tests’ and any immunity to covid only last two months??

I have t seen either of these mentioned anywhere else!

LangClegsInSpace · 23/06/2020 22:44

Hoping for the best, preparing for the worst.

FusionChefGeoff · 23/06/2020 22:44

Even Joe Wickes dropped gradually down to 3 x a week Grin
