The briefing just seemed so, abrupt today. Suddenly it’s ‘the last ever briefing’, most things are allowed to open up next week, keep your distance, and then a “right we’re off good luck” sort of exit. While there’s still hundreds of deaths a week.

Seems a bit premature - I would’ve thought they would at least do a weekly briefing. I can’t decide if they think taking the briefings off the air will be “out of sight out of mind”, and people will chill out and start spending and going out again. Or whether they’ve run out of steam and need a break before the autumn colds season descends. Whitty seemed sure this wasn’t going anywhere and we’re in for a year plus of this. What do you think?

Couldn’t agree with you more!

LovingLen · 23/06/2020 21:18

I would expect to have some sort of briefing about the quarantine and air bridges, probably due in about a weeks time so I will see what happens then, if we don’t get a brief on that I will be quite disappointed

Lemons1571 · 23/06/2020 21:23

I don’t get it. Maybe viewing figures are down and most people no longer watch it. I wfh full time though so it’s a good way of finding out if guidance is changing.

I imagine Boris wanted the briefings gone long, long ago. Since Cummings, really

Qasd · 23/06/2020 21:26

It is what the rest of Europe have done! If either works for us all or not at all..I genuinely do not know which but genuinely think it’s a second wave across Europe or not the U.K. policy is not now significantly different from others.

colouringindoors · 23/06/2020 21:27

I think it's part of the Tories "back to normal! nothing to see!" approach.

I'm not optimistic.

Lemons1571 · 23/06/2020 21:29

Are they capitalising on a few months of an economy boost before the shit hits the fan in October? Then they can blame the public for not following 1m+

Distinct possibility

MarjoryStewartBaxter · 23/06/2020 21:39

Bonkers isn't it? I reckon we're all back in lockdown by October at the latest.

dingledongle · 23/06/2020 21:39

All a bit odd tbh

The 'scientists' did not look very comfortable especially Chris Witty.

I cannot imagine people waiting until July 4th for new rules!

Second wave here we come Sad

colouringindoors · 23/06/2020 21:41

Lockdown in dummer has been deadly for my mental health. The thought of it in November actually really scares me.

colouringindoors · 23/06/2020 21:41

*summer!!!

This! I honestly think that they fully expect the figures to rise and outbreaks to occur, but hope that the economy can pick up before the next wave in winter if it comes. I think they're more or less saying that we just have to get on with things now, social distancing seems to have gone out of the window for lots of people now anyway. Personal responsibility is going to be very important going forwards I think.
flack · 23/06/2020 21:48

neah, opposite, I predict no true second "wave". Ripples yes, but not another big peak of deaths as big as previous - in UK. Because policy is not to let this happen even if the control measures have to bankrupt the country. The loudest voices support this strategy (minimise deaths at all costs) so that is what will happen. But we could all be on house arrest again, sure, that part I can believe easily.

In USA I predict a huge (bigger than previous) 2nd peak which could be followed by a 3rd wave sure. Because they are more tolerant of letting the deaths happen.

Yes. If all you're allowed to do is walk in the park and it's cold and raining that will be really awful.
halcyondays · 23/06/2020 21:50

People must still be watching the daily briefing because it’s usually in most popular programmes on iPlayer. Seems very strange to stop them completely. At least do a weekly update.

googlepoodle · 23/06/2020 21:53

I was a bit taken aback this was the last one. Surely weekly updates could have been continued. It seems abrupt.
I have no idea if there will be a second wave - arguments for both sides.

QueenofmyPrinces · 23/06/2020 21:54

I think the end of the daily briefings is the start of things going wrong again....

It’s like Boris got bored, washed his hands of it all, has told us just to crack on with it and then left the building.

The Scientists came across as very nervous to me today.....I don’t get the impression they’re as optimistic as Boris is when he’s wagging on about life starting to return to normal.

I have a bad feeling about the upcoming months....

ineedaholidaynow · 23/06/2020 21:56

I assume Parliament will have the summer recess soon

Poppinjay · 23/06/2020 21:57

I suspect that the daily briefing is no longer working too well as a party political broadcast so it doesn't benefit them to continue.

NotEverythingIsBlackandWhite · 23/06/2020 22:06

What do you mean by the briefing seemed so abrupt? It lasted just over the usual hour. It has got to a stage where they don't have something to tell us every day beyond the statistics. It is pointless to waste their time unless they have meaningful things to announce. We will still get to hear when they have something worthwhile to tell us.

YouJustDoYou · 23/06/2020 22:07

I'm more worried about putting food on my table for my children right now.

Not happening. We can't afford a second lockdown.

Meanwhile, I'm unspeakably glad that this one is over.

I wondered whether it had something to do with the summer recess, I also wonder whether the rumours of Boris quitting are true and he is going to go through the summer, of see its alright, we followed the science and then quit in September.
