A holiday, yes but an education? No!

Thread title says it all really. Seems more important to get the economy going, but not so important to make sure children can get back into school and start catching up on the education they have missed. Really! Confused

Take them to the pub...thats allowed.

But seriously...it's an absolute disgrace.

FabulouslyElegantTits · 23/06/2020 18:36

Are you talking about secondary? Primary schools are starting back in full in September, Years 1,2 and 6 are mostly back in, alongside the key worker children. It's only a few weeks until the end of term, it would be daft 'pushing our (countries) luck' for the sake of 3 weeks.

FabulouslyElegantTits · 23/06/2020 18:37

And I think pubs opening is bonkers! Once people are pissed, inhibition and common sense go out of the window.

cheninblanc · 23/06/2020 18:39

I'm so disappointed. If my teenagers can go to the cinema why not school?

NeverFit · 23/06/2020 18:40

Exactly! So many people don't obey the rules when sober, never mind when inebriated. Look what happened with street parties on VE Day.

I'm Scotland the government are talking about schools going back full time in August, they are focusing on that instead of getting pubs open.

AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii · 23/06/2020 18:42

Someone has just told me that Nicola has said no UK holidays for Scotland this year? 🤔 what the hell? Guess I won’t be getting to visit my neice and sister in October then 😡

Livingoffcoffee · 23/06/2020 18:43

I hope this doesn't come across as goady...I don't have school age DC, but won't term be done soon - so kids would/will all be off anyways? Would it really be worth all the logistics and changes just for a couple weeks? Or would you want schools to be doing something over the summer?

Timeforanotherusername · 23/06/2020 18:46

Time has run out for schools. They'll be back in September.

I think we just need to accept that and move on and enjoy the new freedoms. I say that as someone desperate to get schools back for education not childcare.

I think Holiday Clubs can open and i plan to use them over the holidays. My kids need socialisation. I can plonk them in from on TV while I work but HC will be better.

Nicola has said Scottish tourism can start mid July. So hols to Scotland will be possible.

ineedaholidaynow · 23/06/2020 18:46

Social distancing is still in place. Primary schools are as open as they possibly can with social distancing. 1m+ still wouldn't mean full classes.

Secondary Schools are more complicated. They are more like some of the other businesses that still can't open.

NeverFit · 23/06/2020 18:47

Surely, children have had such a long 'holiday' already, so why cant they start back in July and work through August to catch up on school. Then current year 6 children can transition better to high schools in September.

August holidays were created for when children had to help to bring in the harvest. Don't think many children nowadays even know what a harvest is! So lets junk it this year and use August to get children back into learning.

Good luck finding teachers who are going to work through the summer holidays 🤦🏻‍♀️

And what about holidays that people have booked? If kids are all off at different times how will they be taught effectively?

Timeforanotherusername · 23/06/2020 18:49

My kids ain't been on holiday. They have been doing new learning and my youngest been back at school.

They need a holiday. And so do the staff who have been working really hard to deliver the new learning. I know not all experiences have been the same but our school has went above and beyond.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 23/06/2020 18:49

No. Teachers deserve a break over the holidays. Children can go back in September as stated. (I'm not a teacher).

My DS has been doing work every day at home since lockdown, I don't want him doing work over the holidays. He deserves a break too.

PeskyRooks · 23/06/2020 18:50

My children haven't had a holiday they've been doing home schooling every single week day!

ktp100 · 23/06/2020 18:51

@NeverFit

It will never happen due the the amount of teachers who have worked right through lockdown.

My sone has only had weekends off since lockdown began. He's worked really hard and needs a break.

Timeforanotherusername · 23/06/2020 18:51

And we have a holiday planned in August. My kids need that too as they have not seen any friends or family for a very long time.

Poochnewbie · 23/06/2020 18:52

My child have had a holiday. She’s worked really hard every single school day. I want her to have the 6 weeks off.
How do you suggest schools are staffed over the holidays?

HairyFloppins · 23/06/2020 18:52

My child is not working through July and August and we will be going on holiday if we can.

Teachers deserve a break as well.

ballsdeep · 23/06/2020 18:52

The teachers haven't though!!!!!
Choice4567 · 23/06/2020 18:52

@FabulouslyElegantTits year 2 aren’t back

Barbie222 · 23/06/2020 18:53

It is too expensive to open schools in the summer because teachers would need to be paid for another 6 weeks. They are not paid for the summer break. Most children haven't been having a "holiday". They've been learning at home or going to school as key workers. No teachers have been furloughed because they are all working with small groups of children or setting the work for children at home. So short of asking them to work for another 6 weeks for free, we can't.

ineedaholidaynow · 23/06/2020 18:53

@NeverFit I don't know whether you mean to be so goady.

My DS certainly hasn't had a holiday. He hasn't been in school but his school has provided a live timetable for remote learning, so he is working from 8.30 to 4.00 (with lunch breaks). He also has daily homework and tests. He has been given revision packs to work through in the summer holidays as will have exams when they go back in September.

whenwillthemadnessend · 23/06/2020 18:53

I can't see why secondary can't have lessons on the grounds. Half inside half out. At least part time until July 20th.

Downton57 · 23/06/2020 18:54

@AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii What Nicola actually said was: "We hope we will see that lifted in the coming weeks and see our tourist industry back up and running by the middle of July.
At that point, assuming all the evidence is still pointing in the right direction, I will be delighted to encourage people to have staycations in Scotland and in all the beautiful parts of our country."
