Thread title says it all really. Seems more important to get the economy going, but not so important to make sure children can get back into school and start catching up on the education they have missed. Really! Confused

I really want them to open so am hoping this is not the case.

It's such a huge loss for kids. I have been homeschooling my kids for almost 2 months now but i'm not really satisfied with it.

If the holidays / theme parks / pubs mean the schools can't open surely that is not fair. They need to look at other things than this R number I think. Children are lower risk as well.

@NeverFit I totally agree that education is massively important and DH and I were having this exact conversation the other day. However, getting the economy underway can’t be underestimated. If schools aren’t ready to re-open then they’re not ready. Plain and simple. If pubs can then they should. Get people spending money so they cash is flowing finally. Having pubs open wasn’t chosen OVER schools it was just because they were ready and able. Would you have preferred it if pubs stayed shut until schools opened? In my opinion that’s daft because anywhere that’s ready should open.

Embarrassed,

I understand what you mean, but that ignores the interaction between different settings when it comes to infection.

In school, because infection control measures cannot be as rigorous as they are in other environments (constraints on space and staff mean that if we want to get all children back in, there will be no social distancing), we rely for 'adequately safe' opening on very low rates of infection in the community.

If pubs are opening, again an environment that presents challenge in terms of maintaining social distance, then that means community infections may rise. That has a direct effect on whether schools can open.
