A holiday, yes but an education? No!

Thread title says it all really. Seems more important to get the economy going, but not so important to make sure children can get back into school and start catching up on the education they have missed. Really! Confused

Teacher contracts say they need to work enough to get the job done. Essentially. Doesn't mean to say a school can direct your time over the holidays, our time has already been directed in my opinion.

Retired65 · 23/06/2020 20:07

Teachers do get paid for their six weeks holiday. They are salaried staff. The way their pensions are worked out reflects this but having said that they are entitled to a holiday.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 23/06/2020 20:14

‘Lessons outside for secondaries’😂😂😂😂

Hmmm plug thewhiteboard in where?
Dock the computer where?
My lessons need plug sockets. We could take a portable power source with us l suppose. Extra fun if it rains.
Laptops are ancient and have no battery life. Guess we could plug them into the portable power source. So rain and overloading it would be even more fun. Really would make the lessons go with a bang!⚡️⚡️⚡️

Usual fussing and screeching if a wasp lands on some one.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 23/06/2020 20:16

We don’t get paid for the six weeks holiday. You are talking shite. I’ve been a teacher 25 years, I’ve never been paid for the 6 weeks holiday

Our school are paying staff to go in for summer schools. Why would they pay them twice?🤔

MarshaBradyo · 23/06/2020 20:17

It’s crap to see pubs etc open but not schools.

But most other sectors have to fight to survive.

sirfredfredgeorge · 23/06/2020 20:18

Would it really be worth all the logistics and changes just for a couple weeks?

Yes, there are kids who have not seen an adult outside their abusing families for months, leaving them another 10 weeks before they can ask for help or be noticed is horrific.

It's not about a couple of weeks education, it's about protecting children.

Going back at the end of June, would have given children in our area 4 weeks of schooling, which would have been worth while. Though maybe not practical for social distancing and bubbles, etc
I think it is a pity that there could not have been some agreement to go back a week early in August with an extra week holiday at October half-term, but I think the logistics would be too complicated, as some (teachers and children) would have holidays booked, etc.
Going back in September makes sense, therefore, and I hope by then the virus will have disappeared and they can abandon the social distancing stuff.

It's not about a couple of weeks education, it's about protecting children.

But then surely this highlights how under funded and under resourced social care provisions have become in the past ten years -under the tory government-. I remember a time when children in abusive homes were able to receive much more proactive support outside of just what is able to be provided by some schools (again resources).
CallmeAngelina · 23/06/2020 20:23

Gawd, YET another one who can't comprehend that the fact that teachers receive a pay check IN August does not mean that they were paid FOR August.

blueglassandfreesias · 23/06/2020 20:23

@NeverFit because us teachers have worked non stop (including Easter holidays, bank holidays and half term) since lockdown began, that's why!

FuchsiaFox · 23/06/2020 20:23

strikethrough fail

As have many of the children.

I am desperate for my Y3 to get back into school - and would love it if she could have a morning or two to see friends and say goodbye to her teacher. But have come to terms with Sep at the earliest for actual ‘school’. No ‘three months holiday’ here - It’s v close to end of term, she has worked bloody hard on the home schooling every day, as have her awesome teachers who are setting home schooling as well as working in school (enough that they’ve reopened to Y5 last week too, as well as YrsR, 1, 6 + KW). She needs a holiday, her teachers need a holiday and time to prepare for Sep. I say this as a FT worker on their knees with exhaustion trying to juggle it all.

SmileEachDay · 23/06/2020 20:25

Yes, there are kids who have not seen an adult outside their abusing families for months

I hope it reassures you to know that every school I know, including my own, has been working hard to ensure this isn’t the case. We’ve had the most vulnerable in, we’ve knocked on doors and we’ve been relentless in our safeguarding.

yearinyearout · 23/06/2020 20:25

Exactly! So many people don't obey the rules when sober, never mind when inebriated. Look what happened with street parties on VE Day.

Quite, and we haven't seen a spike as a result of VE Day.

listsandbudgets · 23/06/2020 20:29

OP your children may have enjoyed a long holiday but mine have worked every single school day. DD (ear 9) has worked to a full timetable. DS (year 3) has had 4 good lessons per day - videos with related resources supplied.

Their teachers must be exhausted from producing those lessons. They will all need a break before the next academic year. Its certainly not been ideal and its been a difficult thing for me and DP to deal with along side working but its been done.

Year 2 aren't back yet by the way.

iusedtobeabletorun · 23/06/2020 20:30

But I’m afraid we are, angelina - we don’t work in august (true) but that doesn’t mean august is unpaid.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 23/06/2020 20:33

It is unpaid.

The summer break is NOT NOT NOT paid.

SmileEachDay · 23/06/2020 20:34

iusedtobeabletorun

What do you think teacher’s contracts say?

Justabadwife · 23/06/2020 20:35

Cracking idea OP. Have a biscuit Biscuit

Let's get teachers who have if you hadn't noticed still worked for last 4 months either from home or in hubs/schools, looking after keyworkers children.

Not that they probably need some time off right about now, but that's fine they dont deserve it this year and they can work through the 6 week holidays because we all know teachers get paid in the summer holidays 🙄 《- for the OP not the teachers.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 23/06/2020 20:38

Maybe this is why they aren’t back.

More schools have had outbreaks than health workers

A holiday, yes but an education? No!
iusedtobeabletorun · 23/06/2020 20:38

Emoji - that’s a common myth.

Teachers are not on term time only contracts with pay spread over 12 months. That’s TAs, not teachers.

A teacher on a standard contract that adheres to the burgundy book are paid for the whole year, including school holidays. They work 1265 hours over 195 days - directed time.

That’s why you can’t be required to work the summer because in normal circumstances the 1265 hours have been used up by the end of the summer term.

iusedtobeabletorun · 23/06/2020 20:38

If you don’t believe me smile check the burgundy book.

There is nothing about term time only contracts in there.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 23/06/2020 20:39

It’s not a myth. Our salary is divided into 12. This covers the summer break for which we are not paid.
