A holiday, yes but an education? No!

Thread title says it all really. Seems more important to get the economy going, but not so important to make sure children can get back into school and start catching up on the education they have missed. Really! Confused

Where will the staff come from @whenwillthemadnessend if you split the classes in half?

Poochnewbie · 23/06/2020 18:56

That should say that she hasn’t had a holiday.

BabyLlamaZen · 23/06/2020 18:56

It's all about social distancing. Kids can't do it 🤷‍♀️ sucks I know

runrabbitrunrunrun · 23/06/2020 18:59

Tourism makes money and education costs money.
That’s all it comes down to.

Piggywaspushed · 23/06/2020 19:00

Summer holidays don't exist because of harvest. It's a well worn myth.

fortmums · 23/06/2020 19:00

Yes, I felt physically sick to hear about the Pubs.

I think PM said "There is hardly an area of the country I don't intend to visit in the course of the reopening of pubs and hostelries of this country."

This is not essential. Beer + socializing = I think spreads the virus.

At least PM used the word "mask" in Parliament at noon. I am from Asia and I think that if we'd all been wearing masks from February then some 40,000 lives could have been saved.

Victoria6386 · 23/06/2020 19:01

There's an infinate amount of educational resources online and sending kids back to school with about 3 weeks left makes very little sense. They shouldn't have to be spoon fed information throughout their entire education.

Samsen · 23/06/2020 19:02

I agree. Don’t get me wrong I’m glad things are starting to get back to normal but I’d my dc be able to go back to school safely then go to the pub, which i don’t do often anyway. If it’s safe for us to meet indoors with families and to go to the cinema, cafes, restaurants etc then why can’t kids go back to school?

Anactoria · 23/06/2020 19:02
@FabulouslyElegantTits year 2 aren’t back
Some schools have started years 2-5 back to join years R, 1 and 6.

My year 2 child started back this week. Doing mornings only though.

beaverbill · 23/06/2020 19:05

@NeverFit, how many days per week do you work for free? Where are you expecting the money to come from to pay the teachers? Supper staff? Office staff? Lunchtime staff? When you and everyone else works for free then we’ll talk about teachers working the 6 week holidays!

formerbabe · 23/06/2020 19:05

I hope this doesn't come across as goady...I don't have school age DC, but won't term be done soon - so kids would/will all be off anyways?

Yes but I'd be grateful for anytime back at school before then. My youngest DC is really struggling and cries a lot that she misses her friends...even a couple of hours a week at school would be a major boost for her mental health.

FabulouslyElegantTits · 23/06/2020 19:07

Sorry @Choice4567 I meant EYFS and Year 1 (I've been in today teaching a Year 1 bubble in my old Year 2 classroom!)

Aridane · 23/06/2020 19:10

It's only a few weeks until the end of term, it would be daft 'pushing our (countries) luck' for the sake of 3 weeks.

Pushing our luck is opening pubs and slashing the 2m to 1m (despite Chris Whitby’s heroic efforts to say it’s 2m failing which 1m plus additional measures)

ohthegoats · 23/06/2020 19:11

If they've done nothing since 20th March, then children have missed 1.9% of their education between R and Y13.

Socialising - make a bubble for them as if they were at school. Lots of park action, lots of it can be socially distanced too.

SmileEachDay · 23/06/2020 19:12

Lessons outside for secondaries?

Have you met England?

Dogsandbabies · 23/06/2020 19:15

@NeverFit

Surely, children have had such a long 'holiday' already, so why cant they start back in July and work through August to catch up on school. Then current year 6 children can transition better to high schools in September.

August holidays were created for when children had to help to bring in the harvest. Don't think many children nowadays even know what a harvest is! So lets junk it this year and use August to get children back into learning.

My children have not been on holiday. I have spent a lot of evenings and weekends planning work for them. Following the school curriculum and ensuring that they have caught up.

As much as I agree the children need to catch up I don't think starting schools in August is the answer. Mine have worked very hard and deserve a break.

Surely the solution is to assess children when schools are open and fill gaps by offering extra tuition.

Dadnotamum72 · 23/06/2020 19:15

One thing I would of liked out of this opportunity would have been to change the holidays permanantly and started the 6 weeks off for everyone at the beginning of July.

Completely agree

ToothFairyNemesis · 23/06/2020 19:19

Children’s have not had a long holiday! What a ridiculous comment.

Mostpeculiar · 23/06/2020 19:19

My god where’ve you’re been Op? I’m a parent whose kids go to the shittest school ever but even I’m tired of this, do we not have a sticky for all the usual q’s

LockdownLou · 23/06/2020 19:21

I think it is what it is now. I’m someone who has wanted the kids back for ages now but it would logistically be a nightmare to implement at this late stage. They will be back in September.

I’m pleased my primary children can now at least go and play on the swings at the park and we can socialise a bit more. We are just going to make the best of the situation now.

Jamjar77 · 23/06/2020 19:23

I know some teachers have been doing amazing work and really need a rest. Unfortunately my child’s teacher (year3) is not one of them. Haven’t heard anything from him since March and the work set is a joke. A few exercises on a website once a week and list of websites - no teacher interaction whatsoever. School won’t do anything to help despite being asked - “we just all have to muddle through...” They expect us to homeschool, with no support from them, and then send out letters telling us to make sure we are doing enough home-schooling so the children are ready for learning in September - it’s a complete joke! I certainly don’t want to tar all teachers with the same brush but some of them appear to be doing the bare minimum and are ignoring requests for help. Now they need a six week holiday to recover. What about the rest of us juggling full time jobs, homeschooling and toddlers?

SavoyCabbage · 23/06/2020 19:23

Holiday! Mine has done two hours on the Windrush (that she couldn’t fit in yesterday) an hour of maths, English, drama, French and geography.

Appuskidu · 23/06/2020 19:23

August holidays were created for when children had to help to bring in the harvest

I’m afraid that much as some people want this to be true, it really isn’t.

DoctorHildegardLanstrom · 23/06/2020 19:23

My son's school still have another 4 weeks to go till they break up.

I am now concentrating on trying to get him into the summer club. He is really missing out on the social side of school and my school has been really good with the schooling from home.

However we are both, really starting to get sick of each other and need a break from each other
