Thread title says it all really. Seems more important to get the economy going, but not so important to make sure children can get back into school and start catching up on the education they have missed. Really! Confused

OP posts:
LavenderLilacTree · 23/06/2020 19:24

My children haven't been on holiday. They have been doing school work at home. They need a holiday. As do the teachers and TAs and school admin and cooks and cleaners etc

PotteringAlong · 23/06/2020 19:26

Surely, children have had such a long 'holiday' already, so why cant they start back in July and work through August to catch up on school

I’ve taught all my lessons, as per my timetable. My pupils have worked through their work at home and submitted it well and they need a break. My kids have worked at their school work and they need a break. I need a break.

"why cant they start back in July and work through August to catch up on school."

Ahhhh a thinly veiled teacher bashing thread. Get over it

AlexisCarringtonColbyDexter · 23/06/2020 19:27

I agree OP- its disgusting.
Ive written to my MP about it

NinetyNineRedBalloonsGoBy · 23/06/2020 19:37

Just to clear up a few misconceptions:

  1. Teachers have NOT been "on holiday".
  1. Children have NOT been "on holiday"
  1. Teachers do not get paid for the 6 week summer break. It is unpaid annual leave.
cheninblanc · 23/06/2020 19:42

I've written to my MP too and been told there have been plans in place for dinner catch ups with 1700 volunteers in our area to teach the children. Plans to come soon he said

cheninblanc · 23/06/2020 19:43

Not dinner!! Summer

namechangerequiredagain · 23/06/2020 19:43

The teaching unions have argued vociferously against schools going back. I imagine this has quite a lot with it. I've read comments on here from teachers who have said they will refuse to go in, or 'self isolate'. I am sure they feel their actions are justified, and I am in no position to say otherwise.

Ooh, 1700 unpaid people teaching-that will be interesting!

No. The teaching unions argued that schools should reopen when it was safe and that they wanted to see the scientific modelling.

That happened and since then the unions have been instrumental in giving schools practical advice and guidance so they could be Covid safe and open.

namechangerequiredagain · 23/06/2020 19:46

'Teachers do not get paid for the 6 week summer break. It is unpaid annual leave.'

That is incorrect. Teachers receive an annual salary split equally over 12 months. Teaching assistants however genuinely don't get paid over the holidays.

iusedtobeabletorun · 23/06/2020 19:47

To be honest, I think going back in the end of June is a bit silly. England and Wales already break up for summer weeks and weeks behind most of Europe, including two other countries in the uk.

Far better to have a concrete plan for September.

cheninblanc · 23/06/2020 19:47

No need to be rude.

ilovecherries · 23/06/2020 19:47

@AlaskaThunderfuckHiiiiiiiii

Someone has just told me that Nicola has said no UK holidays for Scotland this year? 🤔 what the hell? Guess I won’t be getting to visit my neice and sister in October then 😡
That’s not what she said. She said to maintain the 5 miles for now, and she hoped tourism would be open by mid July.
YgritteSnow · 23/06/2020 19:51

Surely, children have had such a long 'holiday' already, so why cant they start back in July and work through August to catch up on school. Then current year 6 children can transition better to high schools in September.

Because the admin and infrastructure that would need to be put in place to accommodate this would be near impossible to achieve. Ensuring there's enough staff, creating the bubbles, planning and spacing the classrooms and public areas, arranging the part time timetables Even simple things like the building works and maintenance that take place in schools over the holidays would have to be cancelled but still pays for. Teachers have still been providing the curriculum on line so they'd still have to be doing that plus getting ready to get kids in over the next couple of weeks. It's just silly to equate the work involved in opening up a pub or restaurant to that of opening up a school of a 1000 plus children every day with all the covid measures that have to be taken.

Svolvaer · 23/06/2020 19:52

I can’t see all the Children being able to go back in September, not full time anyway, if social distancing is still in place. Even at one metre. There just isn’t the room in the average classroom. I work in a school so here’s an example - 30 children in Year 5/6 class. Usually sit in three long rows of ten desks per row. With social distancing of 1 metre the desks have to be apart meaning only five desks in a row. Hence only 15 children fit in the room safely.

So either the children come in part time or Boris rushes round the club try building extra classrooms in every school over the holidays,!

Appuskidu · 23/06/2020 19:53

Our contract says we are paid for 195 days. 190 days of teaching time and 5 days of INSET. We are not paid for the other days. Our pay is distributed equally across the months.

iusedtobeabletorun · 23/06/2020 19:54

That is actually incorrect app

SmileEachDay · 23/06/2020 19:56

That is actually incorrect app Oh? What do teaching contracts say?

SmileEachDay · 23/06/2020 19:57

Or do you means it’s 195 days plus the 5 (Ish) weeks holiday entitlement?

August holidays were created for when children had to help to bring in the harvest. Don't think many children nowadays even know what a harvest is! So lets junk it this year and use August to get children back into learning.

Mine have had lessons daily from 9am to 3pm since March 30th except for the half term and Easter holidays. They will be having the summer off and will not be doing any work.

IAintentDead · 23/06/2020 20:02

Kids would have been back in school if not for the unions scoring political points.
