My friend has just said she's not rushing into anything /going anywhere for the rest of the year.
Do you think Lockdown is over too fast ?

OP posts:
ChavvySexPond · 23/06/2020 19:32

I understand that things are going to get bad again so they're giving us a little break but honestly, I'll be continuing much as before because I want to visit vulnerable older family members and I don't want to sob at their funeral wondering if I was the one who infected them.

ChavvySexPond · 23/06/2020 19:33

It would be a lot easier if this government hadn't lied to us so much.

ChavvySexPond · 23/06/2020 19:34

And we had an adequate track and trace system.

QueenCT · 23/06/2020 19:40

I'm concerned about distancing when shielding is lifted.. I'm guessing by then virtually nobody will be social distancing and there will be a flood of extremely vulnerable back to work etc

ChavvySexPond · 23/06/2020 19:47

Sir Patrick Vallance, giving evidence to the Commons health and social care committee emphasised the importance of abiding by the two-metre social distancing guidelines set out by supermarkets and other essential shops during the lockdown.

“The risk at one metre is about 10 to 30 times higher than the risk at two metres, so distancing is an important part of this.”

ChavvySexPond · 23/06/2020 19:52

I think work is one of the biggest risks because of the air conditioning and the prolonged contact.

There weren't many situations in every day life where people were less than a metre away from you anyway, were there? Just queues. And I'm not getting in a lift. I'll tell you that.

CrotchetyQuaver · 23/06/2020 19:57

No. The country cannot even begin to recover fully until the schools get back to normal and all other forms of childcare. If we don't get back to "normal", the extent of the economic downturn will be awful. Not to mention all the government borrowing that's funded the past 3 months that will need to be repaid. We have to get back out there again and try to return to something like normal. Otherwise I reckon there'll be another Great Depression. It's clear some sectors - such as aviation and the arts, particularly theatres and concert halls - are going to take a very long time to recover (if they ever do)

annabel85 · 23/06/2020 20:34

@Midrangecolours

Rest of the YEAR??!
Personally i'd say if you want to do something do it now while infection rates are low. Once everything opens up again (and once we head to winter) infection rates will soar again.
annabel85 · 23/06/2020 20:36

@violetscone

Yes, they are. They’re trying to have the second spike now in the summer, blatantly.
But they can't afford to lockdown again, so how will they slow the spread once it starts getting out of hand like in March?
TSSDNCOP · 23/06/2020 20:39

Just because things are easing, there is still no reason to go completely nuts. Take it slowly, be measured, be risk aware. First you can savour the extra freedoms at a slower pace, second you will get more than if you hurl yourselves into crowded areas for prolonged periods.

Just use your loaf!

joan04 · 23/06/2020 20:47

Question to those that think things are opening back up too fast;

What are you using to evaluate your risk? Statistics and science show that in a nutshell you would have to meet 1,700 people to find one infected, let alone contract it from them. Those odds are also increasing by by 2 to 4% a day. To put into perspective you have more chance of drowning when leaving your house.

At what point should things reopen? If things drag on much longer there won't be an economy left to reopen.

GarlicSoup · 23/06/2020 20:48

Yes far too fast, I think it may lead to a second wave.

annabel85 · 23/06/2020 20:54

At what point should things reopen? If things drag on much longer there won't be an economy left to reopen.

And we could wait a few months to open things up and get a second wave then anyway and at a worse time.

I think the measures are about right (it's not ideal but the economy can't be forgotten). If you look at March you still had packed out commuter trains, fans packing into football and rugby grounds, pubs, bars and restaurants packed out with no social distancing, Cheltenham races, concert venues all over the country packed out etc etc.

None of these things will be the case now (although coummuter trains will be busier the masks on public transport will help slow transmission).

Rates will go up but it can be relatively contained. The hospitality sector is going to be decimated though.

CountreeGurl · 23/06/2020 21:07

Wealth over health is what's happening. I've no desire to go to pubs etc. I can't see what would be enjoyable or relaxing about it at all. New infections are way to high for these measures to be safe

BooseysMom · 23/06/2020 21:09

I wonder if the new 1m rule will mean schools will go back sooner now?

Did anyone else notice a newsflash on the rolling bar just before the briefing started saying the govt want to get all years back in August? There was even a specific date! Or is the heat affecting me?! Confused

FizzFan · 23/06/2020 21:10

Wealth over health is what's happening.

Who pays for health with no money coming into the economy? What about the health issues that will be caused by poverty caused by a crashed economy? Do only Covid deaths matter to you?

annabel85 · 23/06/2020 21:12

I'll be staying at home, save for essential shopping and socially distanced walks probably till next year unless i'm called back into the office (currently wfh).

However, i'm glad shops and pubs are back open and hope people go to them. For one it helps salvage the wreckage of the economy and secondly they're the guinea pigs to test how virulent the virus still is.

FizzFan · 23/06/2020 21:15

“The risk at one metre is about 10 to 30 times higher than the risk at two metres, so distancing is an important part of this.”

Surely numbers are important too. Back at the start of lockdown 1 in 40 people were estimated to have it, so 2m was sensible. When 1 in 2700 have it, it seems OTT.

Second wave or not we just have to get going. I would hope the care homes fuck up wont happen again so even if there is a second wave hopeful it won’t be as bad. It’s going to be here until a vaccine, and that may never come, so we need to get on with it.

MarshaBradyo · 23/06/2020 21:17

The risk at one metre is about 10 to 30 times higher than the risk at two metres, so distancing is an important part of this.

Interesting virologist on R4 on this, said it sounds a big increase but it’s roughly 98.5% to 97% not getting it when going from 2m to 1m and mitigation helps again.

pontypridd · 23/06/2020 21:19

It’s all happening way too fast for me. We’re just carrying on as if it’s still lockdown.

userxx · 23/06/2020 21:30

Not fast enough for my liking, I've got my favourite restaurant booked for the 4th July, can't wait 🙏

Stellakent · 23/06/2020 21:32

What I read here on Mumsnet doesn't reflect what people I know think in real life. Most people I know think we need to get back to some sort of normal and are prepared to adapt - book tables in pubs/restaurants, queue outside shops as necessary etc. I only know a couple of people who think we should stay in lockdown. One is a gloom and doom merchant and the other has the luxury of a pension and is loving the drama of it all.

I work in an industry where all our work has gone for the foreseeable future. Some of my colleagues have cried and been suffering anxiety and depression over how their lives have been turned upside down and how they are going to cope. We have to move forward and get the economy going again.

IcedPurple · 23/06/2020 21:34

Wealth over health is what's happening

It's not like the thousands who can now go back to work are wealthy. We're talking waiters, barmen, cleaners, hotel receptionists, drivers etc.

Do you think they should be on furlough indefinitely? Who's going to pay for that?

ToothFairyNemesis · 23/06/2020 21:37

@joan04 Statistics and science show that in a nutshell you would have to meet 1,700 people to find one infected, no that’s incorrect , if there are 1:1700 people with Covid19 statistically you won’t meet 1699 without Covid19 first. That’s not how it works.

jasjas1973 · 23/06/2020 21:38

mmmmm i think that somehow, we have managed to wreck the economy yet not bought CV down to the levels required for the sort of easing we are embarking on.
The economy will not restart if there is a virus that is untreatable, attacks the elderly, either in a care home or not and anyone with any underlying condition and has a death rate 10x that of flu.

We are where we are though, we can't go back in time and have to hope that over the next few months of summer and autumn we can get Cv levels down and a tracking system in place that will help us if or when any 2nd wave happens in the winter.

Rather scary Johnson thinks no country in the world has an app up and running! Is he in charge of the show or not?
