Not sure how I feel about having this download on my phone without my permission. How about you?

@MRex - Just to be especially cautious, as well as turning off Bluetooth it's best to turn off Mobile Data and Wi-Fi on your phone too. Especially if you don't want your mumsnet activity to be monitored by Them.

Very wise advise. You can never be too careful. Might be best to turn on airplane mode.

WinnieWonder · 21/06/2020 22:58

Weirdly, I"m in Ireland and I just checked and it's on my phone too.

And it wasn't the British govt or the British telecom companies that put it there. Confused That is odd.

WinnieWonder · 21/06/2020 23:00

I'm a dick?

Geez.

notacooldad · 21/06/2020 23:00

i will not be controlled any more than i have already with lockdown and impending redundancy due to lockdown
If you dont want to be controlled ( what ever you mean by that) your best bet is going off the grid.
Otherwise as long as you are moving about there's info about you.

OchonAgusOchonO · 21/06/2020 23:03

Winnie - please tell me this is sarcasm.

midnightstar66 · 21/06/2020 23:03

'On my phone too' 🤪. Actually it's not as I'm always a bit behind with updating, but I was feeling left out after 22 pages of it. Yes it will be on everyone's phones it's a basic software update like many others.

GlacindaTheTroll · 21/06/2020 23:03

My concern is that there was NO information given to explain it was being put on my phone

I'm not sure what the system is for android, but the Apple notification was linked earlier in the thread.

And here is a BBC article about the Covid app, which mentions that it needs to use this software (it's the thing referred to when it's talking about access to the API).

www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-52807635

There was quite a lot of news articles about this between 20 May (13.5 update) just after 26 May (the Apple/Google announcement the Beeb article refers to).

@WinnieWonder GrinGrinGrin

Patsyanna · 21/06/2020 23:21

Its on mine but says not turned on. Also says you have to turn blue tooth on

Talisin · 21/06/2020 23:41

sticks head in

Still? This is still going on? Do this many people really not understand how smartphones work? And don’t read anything but the opening post?

Nat6999 · 21/06/2020 23:45

It's on my Galaxy S10+, is there a way of deleting it? Don't like the idea of this happening without my permission.

syskywalker · 21/06/2020 23:46

And the stupid starts. 1 it’s apples and Google’s app which does not data mine unlike the failed Uk government one was intended to. 2 it’s not the app 3 you have to download the app 4 you also have to turn on Bluetooth. So it’s like you’re electrician installed a plug socket. Doesn’t mean you have a working telly. You need to plug it in then turn on the plug.

acatcalledjohn · 21/06/2020 23:47

It's staggering, isn't it @Talisin. Some fab PPs though. I honestly keep coming back for more comedy! Grin

acatcalledjohn · 21/06/2020 23:48

Nothing is happening especially reading.

myfifyhun · 21/06/2020 23:49

Same principle as when we got our lockdown notification via our phones. Husband is a techy and he says it is harmless. Explanation here; www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-53120290

OchonAgusOchonO · 21/06/2020 23:54

@Nat6999 - It's on my Galaxy S10+, is there a way of deleting it?

Yes, there is. A couple of suggestions up thread. One is to restore to factory settings. But that will only work of you have an archived version of the OS prior to this shocking invasion of your privacy being installed. The other approach in involves a hammer and a Nokia brick. The secind approach is much more reliable.

Don't like the idea of this happening without my permission.

If you write a stern letter to Samsung, I'm sure they'll apologise.

rainbowunicorn · 21/06/2020 23:54

If ever there was a thread to prove that a huge number of the Great British public were below average intelligence then this is it.

Some people really are as thick as shit. It is no wonder we have thread after thread of people who can't understand basic intructions or read information and actually comprehend what it means.

There is an explanation on the android version of this when you click on the more info link or the little question mark in the circle. How have so many people managed to find this API and not bothered to click the more info so they can understand what it means.
I don't have an apple device but assume there is also information on their version that explains it in an idiot proof manner.

GreyTS · 21/06/2020 23:58

Wow...all the stupid stupid people, I can't stop reading this thread, sensible and rational explanations posted almost immediately but still page after page of nutty reactions. Not sure whether to laugh or cry

OchonAgusOchonO · 22/06/2020 00:03

Uumm. That's the way averages work. Lots below average, lots above average Grin

There is indeed a ‘Learn more..,’ link on iPhones which leads to a handy dandy doc called ‘Exposure Notification & Privacy’ written in nice plain English that a 10 year old could probably understand.
WinnieWonder · 22/06/2020 00:11

@OchonAgusOchonO I've already explained, I'm a dick, and I'm of below average intelligence and I skim read. Hope that clarifies!

WinnieWonder · 22/06/2020 00:12

I'm not British though.

OchonAgusOchonO · 22/06/2020 00:18

@WinnieWonder - I'm not British though.

I know. I'm Irish too. That's why I was hoping it was sarcasm. Didn't want you letting the side downGrin

And you never know, you mightn't be below average intelligence. After all, you were clever enough to recognise that you're a dick.

WinnieWonder · 22/06/2020 00:26

I can only apologise! I committed the cardinal sin of being stupid and Irish. I was a bad ambassador for Ireland and I do apologise.

I can admit I"m a dick if I"m a dick, I've been on those threads where nobody reads the first 9 pages. But I am pleased to report that although somebody called rainbow unicorn thinks I'm stupid, I can live with that.
