Not sure how I feel about having this download on my phone without my permission. How about you?

You don't have to read 16 pages of everything, but it is a bit odd to read zero pages of anything beyond the OP

^ This.

For the people who are too busy and important to RTFT:^

Everyone's been in that meeting where someone arrives late in the middle of the conversation and disrupts everything by asking questions that have already been answered and repeating earlier comments, completely oblivious to the disruption they're causing, while everyone else rolls their eyes and thinks "what a dick".

This thread is that meeting.

And if this situation doesn't sound familiar to you, you were the dick.

Does anyone else feel like suggesting that people reset to factory settings, just for the shits and giggles?

WhatCFeryIsThis · 21/06/2020 21:03

@MRex nooo... I would never do that Grin

chicken12 · 21/06/2020 21:10

does not do anything without an app

ChequerBoard · 21/06/2020 21:11

It's pretty obvious if you listen to the news. NHS-x were building a contact tracking app. It's been tested on the Isle of Wight but has now been scrapped as it could not capture contacts from Apple iPhones (pretty major flaw).

Uk government have now agreed to use the app developer by Google & Apple instead but this won't be going live for a while as there are fixes and testing to be done before it's ready for use. In the meantime, when the latest versions of their phone software has been downloaded the necessary settings to make the apps work have been pushed down to phones.

It's an optional service - it's up to you if you want to download the app when it's ready and switch on the optional contact tracing setting.

Excellent suggestion. I did suggest that earlier on if they had an archived backup pre-the offending OS. But I prefer your suggestion. Much cleaner.
MRex · 21/06/2020 21:21

@OchonAgusOchonO - sorry, I missed that in the flood of "OMG my phone operating system updated as scheduled!!"

@ElizabethMountbatten - It's on mine but it's off.... I definitely didn't download anything to do with Covid!

Yes you did, when you updated your OS.

Ps - your phone needs charging.

I should have written it in ALL CAPS

GirlInTheMirror27 · 21/06/2020 21:43

I've got it too on my phone iPhone

OchonAgusOchonO · 21/06/2020 21:47

@GirlInTheMirror27 - @MRex had an excellent suggesting above to deal with it.

Ps - because I'm not excessively cruel: she is joking and you should not restore to factory settings.

LittleMissNaice · 21/06/2020 21:50

I don't have it. I mean, it's probably cos I've not updated recently, but now I'm wondering if I'm really just so dull no one wants to know what I'm doing 😭

iVampire · 21/06/2020 22:15

if I'm really just so dull no one wants to know what I'm doing

It ain’t what you do .... it’s who you’re doing it with

Sissyjd · 21/06/2020 22:16

Ffs just checked Android...turned bluetooth off. Not happy at all. Never installed it..i will not be controlled any more than i have already with lockdown and impending redundancy due to lockdown. Plus where i live know NOONE who has even had it!! Angry

acatcalledjohn · 21/06/2020 22:20

Can we play a game and call it Spotted Dick?

There is a good suggestion upthread if you don't want to be controlled anymore. It involves a hammer.

ItsGoingTibiaK · 21/06/2020 22:20

@sissyjd

While you were taking the time to see if this was installed and then turn off Bluetooth, did it cross your mind to actually read the thread or do a quick Google search?

bubbleup · 21/06/2020 22:28

@Sissyjd what aren't you happy about?

JuneJuly · 21/06/2020 22:32

I updated a shed load of apps today & I looked at each one to see what the update entailed. Not one of the Google apps mentioned that this 'feature' was included but, yep, it's there in Google settings now.

As it's off, I never use Bluetooth, & it requires an app I'm not too concerned that it's there. My concern is that there was NO information given to explain it was being put on my phone.

MRex · 21/06/2020 22:33

Just to be especially cautious, as well as turning off Bluetooth it's best to turn off Mobile Data and Wi-Fi on your phone too. Especially if you don't want your mumsnet activity to be monitored by Them.

loopylindazdaughter · 21/06/2020 22:34

On my phone too

dementedpixie · 21/06/2020 22:38

Why would Google app mention a software update? Your software update would have given info about it which you obviously neglected to read

SummerSazz · 21/06/2020 22:41

Having been on MN for 10+ years I honestly thought that the Mumsnet community was pretty intelligent and rational. This thread is sadly destroying that post by post on this thread Sad

winniestone37 · 21/06/2020 22:51

It’s not activated and can’t be unless you download the app. Get a fucking grip. No one cares where you are and what you’re doing.

OchonAgusOchonO · 21/06/2020 22:54

@JuneJuly - Not one of the Google apps mentioned that this 'feature' was included but, yep, it's there in Google settings now.

Probably because none of them can install an api on your phone.
