Not sure how I feel about having this download on my phone without my permission. How about you?

On mine and I live in France.

dementedpixie · 20/06/2020 15:08

That's because all phones will get the update regardless of where you live. Its wont just be uk specific

Iwantacookie · 20/06/2020 15:08

@demented pixie because at some point we will have a vaccine so why would we need it then?

dementedpixie · 20/06/2020 15:11

vaccine is a good way off still. Mind you so is a working app!

SunshineCake · 20/06/2020 15:24

@GlacindaTheTroll

Can someone show the picture of the app please?

Which app? This software update isn't an app. Some MNetters overseas might be using Covid exposure apps and might be able to tell you about them.

Turns out I somehow downloaded the one for Northern Ireland [oops].
SoupDragon · 20/06/2020 15:35

I haven't updated the OS or any apps on this device in several months

What iOS is it running?

MrsFezziwig · 20/06/2020 15:45

Hope someone from the government is reading this so they don’t spend even more millions of pounds developing an app to help with Track and Trace which people will refuse to upload as it’s an unbearable invasion of privacy.

On the upside, as a rather old person I’m slightly preening myself on my relative grasp of technology compared to a large number of people on this thread.

GoldenOmber · 20/06/2020 15:48

Also all the media coverage they could not find 10 seconds to say this will be appearing on your phone?

They did! www.theguardian.com/technology/2020/may/20/apple-google-phone-app-trace-coronavirus

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 20/06/2020 15:49

And here
www.theregister.com/2020/05/05/apple_googles_exposurenotification_api_update/

MrsNathanDrake · 20/06/2020 15:53

It will only work once you install an app for tracking. Apple and Google have done the back end work to their operating systems which currently support tracking apps very successfully in other countries. It will do bigger all here in the UK until an app is released here which complied with Apple/Google standards.

flumposie · 20/06/2020 16:00

Been added to mine but says off.

rainbowunicorn · 20/06/2020 16:13

@lootsharks well seeing as it is NOT AN APP it make sense that it is not in your list of apps.

Aragog · 20/06/2020 16:15

Its on one under privacy BUT it is turned off. It was automatically on off and it cannot be turned on as of yet, regardless of having any form of Covid related app.

It isn't an app on Apple. It is part of the privacy settings. Just like any other part of the privacy settings you don't choose specifically to have on there. And agin, there is an on/off toggle - though it is automatically set to off right now and cannot be turned on yet.

Chaotic45 · 20/06/2020 16:54

THIS IS FOR ANYONE WHO HAS FLIPPED THE THREAD and is outraged:

  1. Take a deep breath
  1. Read the thread for plenty of into about what this is (API addition), and what it is not (an app, an auto tracker).
  1. Back this up with your own research from trustworthy sources.
Talisin · 20/06/2020 17:35

From the BBC www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-53120290 for those complaining about the lack of media coverage.

MRex · 20/06/2020 18:28

@Iwantacookie - "they" did. Apple and Google have given multiple press releases about how they're supporting tracing apps with an API.

I'm going to have to stop reading this thread.

BertieBob · 20/06/2020 18:41

Oooh yes, it's on my phone.

OchonAgusOchonO · 20/06/2020 19:04

@MRex - I'm going to have to stop reading this thread.

I'm staying right here as the tinfoil hattery is brilliantGrin.

I had a recent friend request on FB from the mother of a girl my daughter was friends with in primary school. They haven't seen much of one another in 6 years so I haven't spoken to the mother since then. She was always a bit tinfoil hattish so I decided to have a look at her FB. It was full of 5G conspiracy theories. Much and all as a good conspiracy theory amuses me, I decided not to accept the request as I wouldn't have been able to restrain myself.

FakeCutlassesAreAGatewayWeapon · 20/06/2020 19:31

It's not an app. It's simply a way for an app to work if we ever get one. You can't even turn it on because it does nothing without an app.

If anything the tracking apps will be less invasive than the location markers most people seem happy to plaster all over their social media. It also uses the same technology as air drop and connections between smart watches and phones. Technology that's already in your phone.

0v9c99f9g9d939d9f9g9h8h · 20/06/2020 22:27

What do you expect to happen? This was always the price of easing lockdown. Did you not realise?

DuineArBith · 20/06/2020 22:43

I have zero problem with this. It does nothing unless and until I decide to download the app, and I probably will. It was the app produced by Cummings' mates that I objected to due to the lack of safeguards around personal information, I'm happier that the Apple/Google apps seem much more compliant with the law.

torydeathdrug · 20/06/2020 23:51

this is a very funny thread.

It's not on mine - I must be an Overlord (actually I just haven't let it update for months).

Tdaadfb100 · 21/06/2020 00:08

@TryingToBeBold

Make sure it’s on securely as it’s going to be a bumpy ride! 🤭

Tdaadfb100 · 21/06/2020 00:09

Did anyone’s phones actually start playing up?

OchonAgusOchonO · 21/06/2020 00:11

Did anyone’s phones actually start playing up?

Yes. Mine has started whispering "We know where you live".
