Not sure how I feel about having this download on my phone without my permission. How about you?

It's on mines Confused

notacooldad · 20/06/2020 13:10

I wish people would stop saying other posters shouldn’t have smart phones as they aren’t smart enough
I wouldn't dream of saying that to anyone. On the other hand have you read some if the comments! They are bonkers.one person claiming they arent going to leave the house with their smart phone. People asking how to" switch it off" people saying they dont want to be tracked at all. Dont they realise you can be tracked anyway. How do they think they are able to prove criminals were in a certain area within a certain time by using mobile phone information.
I could understand the confusion initially but it has been explained over and over that this is an API. People have even explained what that means and people are still outraged!!

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 20/06/2020 13:19
  • Nothing on my phone but I would be happy to have the app when it’s available in my area..... Are you sure its not on buggeroff It's not in apps. It's in notifications. If you type Covid in search bar it comes up. I thought all phones updated now.*

My phone is now saying it will update tonight so it will probably be on there when I look in the morning. I do seem to get updates later for some reason. It’s not an app just an update to the operating system that will allow the app to work if you do get it. I’m not worried about it and will happily get the app when it’s available.

SciFiScream · 20/06/2020 13:22

It's on my iPhone but off.

Need to keep an eye on that.

Perhaps then listen to the explanations, read some of the links (and the blurb that is with this functionality in the iOS menu), and do some googling to get a full picture. But given that people don't, yet believe some idiot's FB status as if it were gospel, it leaves very little room for any other reasonable conclusion.

Anything less than doing your own due diligence is wilfully ignorant. You know, Donald Trump level ignorant. Not something to be proud of.

I know! Where do people think Google gets the information about (eg) how busy a shop is right now and how that compares to normal? They don’t have someone sitting on the door taking notes! But apparently I’m rude and condescending for being surprised that people don’t know this Confused

acatcalledjohn · 20/06/2020 13:26

Need to keep an eye on that.

You don't, unless you download a tracking app that requires that functionality. And turn on Bluetooth and location services. Until you fulfil those three criteria that software will do precisely nothing.

notacooldad · 20/06/2020 13:28

I think we need an announcement on news at
10 to tell people to calm the hell down!

rainbowunicorn · 20/06/2020 13:30

@SciFiScream - need to keep an eye on that.

Why? what do you think it might do? Genuine question after 13 pages of explanations as to what this actually is why do you think you need do anything at all?

flamingochill · 20/06/2020 13:32

If you're feeling paranoid then downgrade your OS or read the details about each update before you update. (Lots of people have auto update so don't read the details)

flamingochill · 20/06/2020 13:36

If you don't want to be tracked don't use a smartphone, don't use 4g /wifi, don't have a contract and don't call or text on a mobile.

rainbowunicorn · 20/06/2020 13:38

I am astounded daily by the sheer number of people that can't engage in a little bit of self education and critical thinking about things that directly affect their day to day life.
We see it on here all the time people asking random mumsnetters what the latest updates are. All this information is there to be found on Government websites, medical journals and decent news sources.
Everytime there is any update people come on here needing it spoon fed to them, literally they need step by step instructions for the most simple things.
It beggars belief that the majority of people are walking about with phones and have no clue how the very basics of them work. They will jump up and down frothing and being outraged but will not actually take the time to educate themselves even a little.

NotIncandescentWithRage · 20/06/2020 13:38

@Lemons1571

Added to my iPhone too. Exposure logging but no app.
Same with my iPhone.
WhoWouldHaveThoughtThat · 20/06/2020 13:58

Sorted - I smashed my iPhone 11 to pieces with a hammer.

Now who's laughing! Grin Grin Smile Confused Shock Sad oh bugger!

That'll learn them!
FluffyKittensinabasket · 20/06/2020 14:01

On mine too and DHs.

noraclavicle · 20/06/2020 14:03

@LonginesPrime

There's enough people who have posted on here to point out it simply enables you to download a tracing APP if you want to

Well if they read the comments on this thread, they probably would have read the notes on the feature in their settings.

Like the settings it's "headline > react", not "headline > read the details > react".

Agreed - 13 pages in and it’s still ‘OMG it’s on my phone’ Confused
Purplephonecover · 20/06/2020 14:16

I hope that U2 don’t release a new album

Chickydoo · 20/06/2020 14:28

Here too

GoldenOmber · 20/06/2020 14:30

I quite liked that U2 album Grin

rainbowunicorn · 20/06/2020 14:33

Why after 13 pages are people still popping up with Oh it's on my phone and the like. It will be as it is part of a software update. The majority of people will have their phones set to the default automatic updates. The API will be on your phone along with many others like it. It is not sinister. there is no conspiracy and if you have a bloody smartphone then 'Big Brother' has been watching you all along.

RubyTrees · 20/06/2020 14:38

I am astounded daily by the sheer number of people that can't engage in a little bit of self education and critical thinking about things that directly affect their day to day life.

That takes time and effort though...it's much easier to ignore the many helpful replies on this thread and scream hysterically.

OhSweetNuthin · 20/06/2020 14:55

So much stooopid 😫

Iwantacookie · 20/06/2020 15:02

To everyone saying you need to download the app I understand that but atm we cant get rid of this api covid 19 thing so I'm wondering if we will be allowed to delete the app after we've downloaded it. Also all the media coverage they could not find 10 seconds to say this will be appearing on your phone?

dementedpixie · 20/06/2020 15:06

Why would you download the app if you are going to delete it? Its not mandatory to have the app (that doesn't even exist yet!)
