I've really just put dairy, cleaning/laundry products and biscuits/snacks on my Waitrose Xmas order for now. Adding a bottle of sherry made the order up to £40 and I'll add more once I have sorted out who I need to feed.

I have just had my first online delivery from a local butchers, who has only just built a rudimentary web shop. Amongst the various meats I also ordered some veggie burgers (flavours looked good) that turned out to have sold too well this week. Rather than phone to check what to do, they subbed with....

My best ever sub, which I've mentioned many times once or twice, was not far off 20 years ago. Tesco couldn't deliver my tub of pistachio nuts so sent me a packet of ....

Rich Tea finger biscuits. Hmm I wondered if ginger nuts had been an intermediate stage in the thinking, if any thinking had indeed gone on.

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g

There was an interesting item on the radio the other day about how tricky it's going to be for turkey farmers this year. They had already ordered in their young birds by the time the lockdown was ordered, and they are now stuck with lots of monster turkeys designed to feed the huge family gatherings that shouldn't be happening this year, and not enough smaller birds for 4-6 people. There was talk of possibly cutting the monsters in half.

I expect what will actually happen is that a lot of families will do something a bit different this year. (We won't, because I am the cook and I am a stickler we are sticklers for tradition at Christmas, and I love having all the leftovers in the Christmas-to-New-Year period.)

Presumably they can be dismembered & frozen - crowns & drumsticks? (Or turned into Twizzlers...Hmm)
@PersephonePromotesEquanimity just how bad can that M&S loo roll be? They offered it to me as a sub but I refused it based on the uniformly appalling reviews. Is it just sawdust? (The next week they subbed Velvet which is just fine but how are they always out of bloody Andrex?)
Local Lidl had a pallet-full of Andrex 24s on Monday (ditto Charmin)

Maybe it’s all being diverted Confused

I'm sure they can, but I don't know enough about turkey farming to know how easy that will be to do. Presumably most turkey farmers produce birds which are ready shortly before Christmas and designed to be sold as whole birds. Some of the bigger producers will have arrangements with butchers or food processors so their birds end up as turkey crowns with the other bits frozen or used in other products. That's the side that would need to be ramped up a lot in time for the birds being ready to slaughter. I don't know how it will affect the farmers' profit margins.

I hope The Archers scriptwriters have thought about this, as there's a key character who makes a tidy sum every year rearing a few turkeys for Christmas. [hops over to TA thread]

A great deal of my friends and family head to local restaurants, including the Indian for Christmas lunch. Guessing that will be allowed but for a maximum of six.
That said I did see something about it being relaxed for Christmas Day.

I hate to be the ‘I’m alright Jack’ type but having two adult kids and their partners means we are a family of six anyway so as long as this rule stays we should have a relatively normal day.

Olinguito · 08/10/2020 15:12

I don't have a smart pass, and haven't had an email, but just checked the website and I have access to Christmas slots. Nothing available after 21st Dec though.

lexloofah · 08/10/2020 15:14

@username108 I had a Colin caterpillar cake in my order for Monday but I edited it out yesterday, I wonder how long it takes for an item to get back in circulation, suppose someone else has nabbed it sorry

I actually don't think I need a Christmas order as already ordered meat & veg locally and can get most things in advance and freeze some things.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 08/10/2020 15:33

Still no Christmas slot email for me but I did get an email today saying

“Things are a little busy at the moment and slots are selling out faster than usual. To make sure you get the deliveries you want, we recommend booking slots further in advance.“

But there are no slots available to me beyond 22nd October when I already have a delivery!

Shellingbynight · 08/10/2020 17:57

I got my Ocado Christmas email yesterday and booked the slot today, there were slots available for the whole period and I chose the 22nd. Everything I wanted was available - unlike Waitrose which had multiple unavailable items for the slot I booked with them on the 20th. I'll cancel Waitrose now.

And then this afternoon for some totally mysterious reason, Ocado emailed that my smartpass was due for renewal next month and they are reducing the price by £10.

Shellingbynight · 08/10/2020 17:57

To be clear - £10 p.a. not per month!

PersephonePromotesEquanimity · 08/10/2020 18:17

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou, yup, exactly the same here, nothing at all after October 21st - even though they're urging me to book up in advance. Confused

Madcats · 08/10/2020 19:53

Do Colin the Caterpillar cakes survive the recently enhanced bag packing algorithm?
I reckon I'd be delivered "Colin's cousin, the slug"
