I know someone on another thread suggest someone start one of these. Considering I've just watched a video with the person leading the vaccine trial,I thought now's as good a time as any. Here's the link to the video,it's really hopeful

Interesting. So it’s not been done that way before?

So they did the same for say, versions of the chicken pox or measles vaccine. There’s not much of that around, must have taken a while to get results

MarcelineMissouri · 16/07/2020 19:08

I think they may have used it for other vaccines, but my understanding is that that’s been when we already had a good treatment for the disease.

Apparently 30,000 people have signed up to volunteer to take part in one.

MarshaBradyo · 16/07/2020 19:12

Ok thanks, makes sense

Cuddling57 · 16/07/2020 19:21

Is anyone on the Zoe app?
I update how I'm feeling daily and they have sent out an email to ask if I would be interested in taking part in future trial vaccines.
So looks like they will start to widen the number of people involved in trialling the vaccine soon.

MarcelineMissouri · 16/07/2020 19:22

Yes I use it too and have said I’d be happy to take part in vaccine trials.

TheWhalrus · 16/07/2020 19:49

@MarshaBradyo Looks as if Oxford might be about to run a 'challenge' trial (alongside the traditional phase III trial), if this news story is accurate: www.theguardian.com/science/2020/jul/16/coronavirus-vaccine-oxford-team-volunteers-lab-controlled-human-challenge-trial

DebLou47 · 16/07/2020 21:18

Sorry I stated another thread didn't Patrick Vallance say o vaccine today or am I wrong

MarshaBradyo · 16/07/2020 21:19

Thanks TheWhalrus hopeful it is happening

Bramblyberries · 16/07/2020 22:01

that does sound hopeful. I wonder why it will take until the end of the year to start, if they have various volunteers already. I know ethical approval will take a while, and they have to wait for some more results from phase 3, but it still seems a long time before it would start, when they are saying that it would give results within weeks. I am sure there are good reasons for the timeline, but I'm curious what aspects will take until then.

TheWhalrus · 17/07/2020 08:49

@Bramblyberries: I agree ethical approval will be complex here and this could explain the delays. Furthermore I would imagine this falls outside of the usual consent processes even for trials of completely unknown agents. For example, I doubt the conventional 'informed' consent to exposing oneself to SARS-CoV-2 is even possible here because so much remains unknown about the late-onset effects, therefore it would be theoretically impossible for a patient to be fully informed of all the risks from enrollment. Legal issues could also be problematic in such a scenario.

neutralintelligence · 17/07/2020 16:13

@DebLou47 What did your thread say - the link seems to be broken now so I can't read it.

That Bloomberg article posted above is very interesting and informative.

"Gilbert has voiced remarkable confidence in her chances, saying the Oxford vaccine has an 80% probability of being effective in stopping people who are exposed to the novel coronavirus from developing Covid-19. She has said she could know by September. Asked by MPs in early July whether the world would have to struggle through the winter without a vaccine, Gilbert said, “I hope we can improve on those timelines and come to your rescue.”

“The British government gave £65 million to accelerate the work and secure 30 million doses for the U.K. by September as part of a deal to make 100 million in total, with some reserved for developing countries. "

Oxford university also have a good 'Covid conversations' series on YouTube, topics have included mental health and schools, but this one is about the vaccine:

PuzzledObserver · 20/07/2020 09:35

The UK government is backing more than one horse (which is sensible) - has secured stocks of 2 other potential vaccines, a total of 90 million doses:

The Lancet editor tweeted this yesterday:

Tomorrow. Vaccines. Just saying.

I presume it's the widely reported paper showing antibody and t-cell response.

BBC reporting vaccine trial results to be published today

BlastedMolluscum · 20/07/2020 13:25

Keeping everything crossed!

Beebityboo · 20/07/2020 13:27

Boris saying he's not confident we will get a vaccine even next year has really worried me Sad.

DebLou47 · 20/07/2020 14:24

@Beebityboo

Boris saying he's not confident we will get a vaccine even next year has really worried me Sad.
He didn't say that don't panic he said he is not 100 % sure he can't give everyone definite my mental health is so bad at mo so I need to be positive
BlastedMolluscum · 20/07/2020 14:33

From the BBC: Boris Johnson said: "Obviously I'm hopeful, I've got my fingers crossed, but to say I'm 100% confident we'll get a vaccine this year, or indeed next year, is alas just an exaggeration.

"We're not there yet."

It's unwise for ANY politician to say anything is 100% certain, they surely know better than that. But that doesn't mean that it isn't going to be possible and with all the different vaccinations that are being worked on surely there will be something available next year at the latest?

BlastedMolluscum · 20/07/2020 14:38

These are on The Lancet website and have a publish date from today (I haven't read the pdfs!)

Is the breaking news good news? Sounds hopeful

Boris is usually definitive about things which then turn out to be wrong anyway.

The vaccine news so far is promising.

Mybrowneyedgal · 20/07/2020 14:57

Cats I think it sounds really good, the results were what they were hoping for.

Although I'm confused why the UK has ordered 100million doses when the population is 65million? Is it because we may need two doses?

Catspaw123 · 20/07/2020 14:59

Yes it could be in some groups you need 2 x doses perhaps?
