I know no one who’s had coronavirus and neither do my friends or family

Or any of their friends or families.
But I have 3 friends who’s businesses probably won’t survive, another who’s husband has just been made redundant, possibly more to follow, a friend who’s teen has sunk into depression. All the dc have missed out educationally and no prospect of getting back to school anytime soon. That’s just my selfish perspective. There’s loads worse off as a consequence of the impact of lockdown and the slow easing out.
Feeling so frustrated with this now. We’re all suffering and I’m not quite sure if the benefits are going to outweigh the losses long term.

My friend's mum had it and nearly died, my other friend's brother had it and another friend's FIL died from it

@Useruseruserusee

How is Lweji being stupid? We can try to avoid and prevent covid deaths by social distancing, hand washing, staying away from those vulnerable and by lockdown.
Ok do we lockdown forever with that lovely free money from the Government then?
TimeWastingButFun · 13/06/2020 23:33

Good. The lockdown's working, then.

Willyoujustbequiet · 14/06/2020 01:48

Count yourself lucky op.

I know 4 people who have died. 3 were young with no health conditions. I know many more cases locally. Several out of action for 8 weeks or thereabouts. None of the victims were BAME. Most were women.

I live in a rural, affluent area.

Lives over economy any day

Jrobhatch29 · 14/06/2020 07:19

@Willyoujustbequiet what age were these healthy young females that have died? Around 190 females under 45 have died, 80% had underlying conditions.

Hmm Obviously we do yes /s

Why be so obtuse to the other tactics the poster mentioned? There’s been zero indication from any expert or person in a position of power that lockdown is the only way to deal corona. Globally the aim appears to be managing life with corona virus as a feature long term but no one is about to let the disease run rampant completely unchecked because nobody has the infrastructure or frankly community resilience to manage flooding their healthcare or corpse disposal services. It may only be a small fraction of society that will die but 1% of 66 million people is a huge number especially if you’re also accounting for a large proportion of your workforce also being temporarily sick at the same time.

Yes lockdown was in part about saving lives but the cold hard facts include the fact that mass graves and cremations irreparably damage a nations psyche and expose the wider population to diseases that appear alongside improperly managed corpse disposal.

Take that as scare mongering if you want (I’m sure you will in fact) but it’s a consideration that the government had to take into account. People don’t just die and that’s it, the resulting consequences give rise to their own issues.

@southeastdweller

I said most likely many more would have died as I take information from the epidemiologists, the mathematicians and scientists rather than the media. The stats thread is really helpful for this, balanced and factual.

This article might help - from the Lancet. Their findings are that lockdown did indeed arrest this virus and slowed the curve of it in all countries that locked down. Countries that went into lockdown earlier had fewer deaths in subsequent weeks - the number of deaths per capita is shown here to be directly linked to the time and extent of lockdown. It's an interesting read

Clearly not.

As you may well (or should have) noticed, most countries are easying up lockdown and implementing other measures.
Read a bit about other European countries and how shops and restaurants are being reopened and small groups of people are being allowed.

It may take longer in countries who took it less seriously, started lockdown later on and used half arsed measures (any thoughts on any?), but the idea is to reach low numbers and then reopen society as much as possible.
It's important to observe lockdown to reach those low numbers, though.

If you want to be angry it shouldn't be at the lockdown itself, or demand it to be opened. It should be demanding proper control measures like effective test and tracing, for example.

I do seriously advise you to read a lot about this issue before posting clearly uninformed ideas while demanding that other pps agree with you.

PandA181016 · 14/06/2020 10:36

Yes we are all fed up with lockdown and cant wait to get back to some kind of normality, but lockdown has saved lives.
Had we continued on the path of herd immunity then those hospitals built to help with the pandemic would not be standing empty.
The goverment imo should have acted sooner and we may not have seen as many deaths as we have so far.

Whoopsmahoot · 14/06/2020 12:18

I know 4 - all in late 40’s or 50”s. Floored them all for a couple of weeks. The one who was the illest was the youngest one who was the fittest, keen runner and gym goer. Only thing about lockdown was it was too soft and too slow in the beginning hence taking so long to be lifted. Was the right thing to do but the wrong way to do it.

theendoftheworldasweknowit · 14/06/2020 15:29

@Lweji Who is supposed to hold Boris accountable?

I mean, if he had a 'normal' job, he would be on a performance improvement plan by now, with a view to being managed out for a complete lack of commitment to the role. Surely just because he's PM he can't get away with doing whatever he feels like until the next election?

Lweji · 14/06/2020 15:35

That would be Parliament, I suppose. His own party. And the electorate.
So...

Oly4 · 14/06/2020 15:38

Lucky you.
And given our huge death toll I hardly think your small sample size means anything does it?

mushroom3 · 15/06/2020 09:05

Deaths are 3x normal in our LA area. Lockdown happened too late and was softer than many other European nations. We had no quarantine in February/March when we should have done, as an Island nation we could have closed our borders. We had the testing capacity but the government was too useless to mobilise it (the equipment and trained personnel to do the DNA testing have been here all along). Our infection rate seems to have plateaued but not be coming down, it's still 1,500 plus per day among people who are tested. This means we can easily have a second peak as there is still quite a high baseline level of infection. This also affects the number of deaths too of course.

daisymay133 · 15/06/2020 09:48

The infections have massively reduced!!

We are testing upto way more people than previously (sometimes 10x) and that now inc exposed asympyomatic key workers

Anyone can now get a test !

Previously we only tested those in hospital at the start and who were unwell

All the mildly and non symptomatic people still had it then we just didn’t test them

I don’t know how anyone can say infections haven’t reduced 🤷‍♀️

I’m north west - peak area- and there haven’t been any new admissions for weeks

Most people getting it now are getting it from hospitals themselves

Lweji · 15/06/2020 11:45

More importantly, the number of deaths have reduced so far and steadily.
From a peak 7-day average of about 900 to an average of about 150.

Bigger clusters in cities saw the most deaths, but lockdown prevented spread to most of the country, with some regions seeing very few or no deaths.

As the number of cases is difficult to compare because of testing, the number of deaths should be the most reliable measure, if not without problems.

I know no one who’s had coronavirus and neither do my friends or family
Lweji · 15/06/2020 11:46

It is possible that infection numbers have plateaued in some regions while dramatically going down in others.

ethelredonagoodday · 15/06/2020 11:47

You are lucky. I know of several deaths, and as we have lots of friends who are medics, most of them have had it.
