It's now mandatory to wear face mask on public transport with exceptions for disability, young children etc.
This should have been done ages ago.
They also admitting face masks offers some protection

About. Bloody. Time.

ArranUpsideDown · 04/06/2020 18:00

I'd like some research on visors v. face coverings.

It's a wretched prospect for deaf people for whom seeing someone speak can be very helpful (even for non-lip readers).

I wonder what the social niceties will be around holding up a mobile near someone to attempt to get Google's Live Transcribe or a similar app to work out what someone is saying.

JingsMahBucket · 04/06/2020 18:01

@DelphiniumBlue
I'm not convinced about this, if it's going to save lives, why wasn't it made mandatory in March?

Because Boris Johnson and his lackeys are a bunch of thickos who were too arrogant to admit the UK isn't immune to diseases by virtue of simply being British.

Pelleas · 04/06/2020 18:01

I predict that Mumsnet will be soon be full of the following threads Wink:

AIBU not to wear a mask
AIBU to think they should have been wearing masks
AIBU to have told someone off for not wearing a mask
AIBU to be upset because I was told off for not wearing a mask
AIBU to make my children wear masks
AIBU not to make my children wear masks
AIBU to be embarrassed by DH's refusal to wear a mask
AIBU to ask whether you'd prefer spots, stripes or flowers on a mask

YgritteSnow · 04/06/2020 18:01

Who will be providing the masks?

You! Obvs. Honestly the entitlement and demand for hand holding from some is laughable.

MasakaBuzz · 04/06/2020 18:01

@DelphiniumBlue

Lovely for an hour's commute on the (very crowded) tube in the usual summer high temperatures. And it's not just mildly uncomfortable, it causes unbearable itchiness and skin flare-ups for some of us. And if you've already had Covid, how can it prevent you from spreading it? I'm not convinced about this, if it's going to save lives, why wasn't it made mandatory in March?
With the greatest respect that’s exactly what I suffer with my hearing aids each summer. Not to mention the spinal brace I wore in my teens.

I could probably swing the disability exemption, but it seems sensible to me. I struggle with the paper ones, tying them, but the elastic ones work better for me.

FTEngineerM · 04/06/2020 18:01

Just throwing this out there... I find it ironic that a few months ago media/people were kicking off saying stupid things like ‘ban the burka’, face covering should be illegal in public and other things to that effect and NOW people are just gagging to cover their faces with it actually becoming MANDATORY on public transport... oh lord.

NotEverythingIsBlackandWhite · 04/06/2020 18:02

@Comefromaway

"I'm asthmatic and if my breathing is bad I too would struggle but I'd just have to not go on public transport on those days if need be."
The Transport Minister announced there are exceptions for people who suffer breathing difficulties.

amijustparanoidorjuststoned · 04/06/2020 18:02

@Pelleas Oh lord I can't wait for these Grin

Mascotte · 04/06/2020 18:02

@JingsMahBucket that's not correct. I was reading on this today and you need to discard them (into a sealed bag) when they get damp and then wash on at least 60 degrees

strugglingwithdeciding · 04/06/2020 18:02

@jings no you get a grip it takes seconds to spread it so drinking would be a risk
I really don't Care about a mask as I don't use public transport anyway so don't need one , although I do have several
But it's pointless removing them as the risk is still there , you don't see nurses just removing them and also it's a risk to you touching your face etc so has to be considered

formerbabe · 04/06/2020 18:03

This is a terrifying assault on our civil liberties.

Pathetic watching the sheep go along with this.

CoolCarrie · 04/06/2020 18:03

Here in South Africa we have had to wear face masks everywhere, except in your own home. No mask, no entry to shops , taxis, shopping centres or anywhere else.

Cornettoninja · 04/06/2020 18:04

@OnlyFoolsnMothers

Cornettoninja yes I find the picking and choosing of who should give up various liberties funny.
Exactly what liberty is requiring people to wear a mask on public transport imposing on? The right to show off your favourite lipstick?

Go on then, exactly how do you propose we should be dealing with this virus. You seem to be able to point out everything we’re doing wrong so please reveal the answers to everything, I’m sure your wisdom is greatly needed at this time.

strugglingwithdeciding · 04/06/2020 18:04

@DomDoesWotHeWants you realise we have one of the biggest lengths in social distancing most others are 1.5 or 1m

Whatevernext1 · 04/06/2020 18:04

As much as I think face coverings are a good idea,I've been advised by my asthma team not to wear one as it can cause breathing difficulties,not sure how I will go about using public transport when it becomes mandatory 🤷🏼‍♀️

Mascotte · 04/06/2020 18:04

Especially sheep with no awareness of the correct hygiene procedures, if they do want to wear them.

Lumene · 04/06/2020 18:05

I'd like some research on visors v. face coverings.

Would a visor not count? Given it covers your face I would have thought it would be ok as a face covering.

Pluckedpencil · 04/06/2020 18:05

Honestly no idea why the uk have to make everything so fecking difficult and complicated. It's a face mask - buy one, make one, use a bandana but for the love of God in a pandemic let's cover the places where mucus comes out! It's bloody common sense, they even knew that in the plague! It's taken the government six months to figure out that maybe China and the whole of the rest of Europe were onto something.

CoolCarrie · 04/06/2020 18:05

It’s not pleasant at all as it’s claustrophobic , and don’t know if it helps , but it’s worth trying.

strugglingwithdeciding · 04/06/2020 18:05

@pigoons exactly but apparently I need to get a grip

Lumene · 04/06/2020 18:06

As much as I think face coverings are a good idea,I've been advised by my asthma team not to wear one as it can cause breathing difficulties,not sure how I will go about using public transport when it becomes mandatory

There are exceptions for those with breathing difficulties. Maybe they will have an optional badge like the ‘baby on board’ ones for the tube?

venetianblue · 04/06/2020 18:07

HURRAY !!!!!

3 months after the rest of the world (it's now June) but we got there Glitterball

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 04/06/2020 18:07

Cornettoninja well mass gatherings of thousands in central and inner London need to be clamped down on. Keep the beaches shut! Perhaps do those things before you tell children who don’t seem to be severely affected by covid they can’t play on swings or in a local sand pit ffs
