It's now mandatory to wear face mask on public transport with exceptions for disability, young children etc.
This should have been done ages ago.
They also admitting face masks offers some protection

@okiedokieme

I'm wondering about the intercity, my journey on the 15th is 3.5 hours, I'll at least need a drink!

Why do people on this website lack so much common sense? If you need to drink, just pull the mask down for the whopping 5 to 10 seconds you need to drink then pull the mask back up.

This isn't rocket science, folks. Jesus.

If you morally opposed a face covering just don’t use public transport. Simple.

I mean it’s kind of stupid and cutting your own nose off to disregard the same protocol that has been in place for SARS and MERS (with full WHO approval) long enough to have plenty of evidence of its efficacy but whatever - enjoy your bike ride.

The WHO and the government really dropped a bollock with their propaganda to preserve PPE supplies and hide their incompetence.

Face coverings are obviously useful for reducing the spread of a respiratory disease. I

Guess being introduced now as more people will be going back to work so places will be busier .
Also has to be exemptions for some , people with asthma some can't wear them but if the majority Are it may help

I travel on public transport daily and except for Care Staff, I haven't seen anyone wear one correctly. So for the person wearing one, it may cause issues.

But after watching a man cough without covering his mouth in Tesco, I wish they would be made compulsory in shops.

What about people like me who suffer from a facial condition that can't be covered and also shortness of breath?

strugglingwithdeciding · 04/06/2020 17:47

@twinnywinny14 I imagine because this is when more places open so public transport will be busier as more people going to work and shops etc
Also gives people time to purchase or make it they don't have one

If someone has such difficulty breathing, why would they be out and about on public transport at the risk of picking up COVID-19? errr because they have to earn a living, do a food shop, take their child somewhere.

I wonder if visors would be an acceptable alternative?
Or maybe just go full hazmat/spacesuit?

Personally I've got no issue with wearing a mask. It gave me a bit of a panic attack when we had to do it in Vietnam at the start of the year when we were travelling for a couple of weeks. I'd never done it before, but swiftly got used to it. It's a massive culture shock doing it in the UK. I always feel like an idiot when I wear one here to the supermarket, until I spot others wearing them.

We've habe been wearing them from ages here in Germany. Is not that hard, you take them off to eat/drink at coffee Shops/restaurants. Some People don't wear them on public transport and I just assume there must be a reason for them to travel without it. I haven't seen anyone asking anyone why they aren't wearing one... but almost everyone seems to comply.
A lot of people wear personalised masks too, made from fabric, which is fun.

Great. That rules out public transport for me as I can't wear the stupid things. Yes, my psychiatrist will write me a letter explaining why I should be exempt but I can't face having to deal with all the twats.

it is a small price to pay to get things moving again

It's a small price for some people. It's a massive one for others. I've tried a few, they have all had me ripping them off my face in seconds. I've made my face bleed in my need to get it off and then sat there shaking and crying for hours later.

But you'll need loads and a safe place to keep them once worn and to wash them correctly to disinfect. Nuts

@mausmausmaus the English government also recommended them on transport just wasn't compulsory

We will never know how many bus drivers would still be alive if this had happened 3 months ago. Perhaps the three that died from my local depot.

Also, I’d have to wear a mask to get the bus to Primark and then take it off to walk around the shops with hundreds of others?

@jings but then you defeat the object of you keep pulling it down to drink surely

@GreyGardens88

How are you supposed to drink an M&S pre-mixed G&T through a mask?

This is the best question of the thread. It is in itself a reason not to wear a blasted face-covering.

www.sciencemediacentre.org/expert-reaction-to-review-of-evidence-on-face-masks-and-face-coverings-by-the-royal-society-delve-initiative/

Dr Ben Killingley, Consultant in Acute Medicine (Clinical Lead) and Infectious Diseases, University College London Hospital, said:

“Regarding the analysis of the evidence base – the report is overly optimistic about the value of face coverings and it is incorrect to conclude that the evidence shows that face covering can reduce viral transmission in the community. There is in fact no good evidence that face coverings achieve this.

@EnlightenedOwl

Of course it's done people won't work or send kids to school because of THE virus govt inept NHS only interest is THE virus..no dental care..that enough?

Nope. Plenty of people are still working and sending kids to school. You want other things to open up again? This is how it works. We wear scarves over our faces on public transport and abide by track test and isolation. Or we don't and carry on in lockdown.

What is it you actually want? No one has that magic wand that makes it all go away.

Lovely for an hour's commute on the (very crowded) tube in the usual summer high temperatures. And it's not just mildly uncomfortable, it causes unbearable itchiness and skin flare-ups for some of us. And if you've already had Covid, how can it prevent you from spreading it?
I'm not convinced about this, if it's going to save lives, why wasn't it made mandatory in March?

I think the Germans are more compliant than we are.

If someone has such difficulty breathing, why would they be out and about on public transport at the risk of picking up COVID-19?

Maybe because they need to feed their kids and put a roof over their head?
