It's now mandatory to wear face mask on public transport with exceptions for disability, young children etc.
This should have been done ages ago.
They also admitting face masks offers some protection

@LoafEater and @ProfessorHasturLaVista you don't have to remove your mask when you actually arrive at your destination off public transport. Just keep your mask on as you shop or go about your business/work. You can then just use one mask and wash it when you get back home.

Cornettoninja · 04/06/2020 18:08

you don't see nurses just removing them and also it's a risk to you touching your face etc so has to be considered

No, but we’re not being asked to wear them so we as individuals don’t catch covid we’re being as to wear them so we as individuals don’t spread covid. We don’t have to wear them to the same standard as medics because we’re simply reducing the spread of our coughs, sneezes and breathing.

Even with imperfect use masks make an impact.

We are using them everywhere in my town (East Coast USA). Most people are not finding them too much of a bother and a whole cottage industry has sprung up with people making them, people donating their spare material to those that can sew, others making patterns.

Our local guidelines say they have to be worn all the time inside commercial or retail establishments by staff and customers and if you are outside you have to wear one if you cant socially distance - so on an outdoor train platform for instance or on pavements which are crowded. Private spaces are exempt except for lobbys of multi-occupancy buildings.

Most people have cloth ones, some with a pocket for a piece of filter material, most people just wash them out in hot water when they get home in the evening

Ridiculous.

Great news for those of us who are asthmatic.

Also pointless for the huge number of people who seem to think that masks are a magical shield of immunity. People fiddle with them, adjust them, or wear them only over their mouth not their nose.

Just as well I don't use public transport. They can sod right off if they think I'm wearing one in the supermarket.

My children would not be able to wear masks from what age is it mandatory and what would they except for disability exemption ? A drs letter ?

Oh, and if you are sitting at a table to eat, you can remove your face covering to do so, but all eating will only happen at distanced tables when restaurants reopen for dining next week

strugglingwithdeciding · 04/06/2020 18:10

@Cornettoninja but it is important people are aware of this also and that it doesn't mean they are then exempt if social distancing and this is my experience in supermarkets
I have no issue with them on public transport but think people should be aware of not touching them too much as well and that they need regular washing etc.

surely if you are wearing a mask and are finding it easy to breath with it on, its probably not providing you with that much protection. Every little thing helps I guess though, not sure why its taken 6 months to recommend this

If this stays over winter season be interesting to see if cold and flu numbers go down if they dont then it's pretty pointless

If you truly will suffer hugely as a result of this policy, I feel for you. Its never going to be possible in things like this to do the best thing for every individual and I'm sorry you're one of the people who will suffer.

If you will be slightly or not at all inconvenienced and are mouthing off your objection, I have no patience for you. We will today or very soon hit 40,000 deaths in the uk. God forbid you find yourself slightly inconvenienced.

Then we need dialogue about those who can't and why. I'm starting to accept that my world and that of my children will be shrinking to nothing but the house as masks become normalised but I wish people would put some thought into why instead of assuming we're selfish.
@JingsMahBucket that's not correct. I was reading on this today and you need to discard them (into a sealed bag) when they get damp and then wash on at least 60 degrees
Sigh. The point is that you don't have to carry about a bevy of masks with you contrary to what you were saying.

Also, great if the government is telling you to wash them at 60 degrees. That still doesn't mean you need loads of masks as you stated before. You still only need 1 or 2. For extra clarification for the slow folks, I'm talking about the fabric masks, not the disposable ones.

I hope they will also be ripping out all upholstery on seats and replacing with easy to clean hard surfaces on buses etc and stopping at every stop so people don’t have to ring a bell....
Deep cleaning the buses every night ?
Limiting the amount of passengers ?
Or will it just be the same as it’s always been but everyone just packed in wearing masks 🤔
Predict some lovely altercations over disability related non mask wearing think life is about to get harder might just avoid it ☹️

Bloody ridiculous. I have a homemade one that's as much use as a chocolate teapot and I think its idiotic. All this hiding from danger bullshit, theres a reason we like to let kids be exposed to germs, to build their immune system. It's not too comfortable and in hot weather I'll slink to top deck and pull the damn thing off. If I'm on top deck with no other person near me then why does it matter? World has gone totally tonto. Providing them is well and good if you travel to the actual depot, I dont, I get on in a residential street and off in the centre off town by the library. No where near bus depots. And I thought fscr coverings didnt even work. All this is a massive reassuring plea because they want to be popular. Fucks sake. Protests and breaches are fine but public sans mask, not so much

To emphasise, masks don't stop you catching it, they reduce the spread if you have COVID.

I do but apparently everyone else is more terrified of covid, despite the fact that the risk of vanishingly low for the vast majority of people. But there you go.

@cyclingmad interestingly, the studies I was browsing through showed different spread through face coverings for different viruses.

Some face coverings also sometimes increased the risk of transmission of certain diseases. It was an interesting morning's reading 😃

Good, I bought several a while ago because I use public transport to get to and from work.

My hay fever snuggled up nose keeps sneezing so this will hopefully give some people around me added peace of mind that I'm attempting to contain my germs.

"Also, great if the government is telling you to wash them at 60 degrees. "
How often do you have to wash them? If I wear a mask now, it would just be to the supermarket. Would they need to be washed after every wear? And do they need to be washed in a machine? I would obviously not put the machine on every day if I start wearing it more often.

As for asthmatics - aren't visors the answer?

Completely agree and thank you for stating it this way. People are trying so hard to be contrarian find reasons to complain. I like to use this phrase to apply to folks like this: People are doing THE most in order to do the least.

It would literally take them less energy to do the right damn thing than come up with all these bogus ass reasons to avoid doing the right thing. It's sad.
