This is fucking me off more than ever today. I just found out that two more people in my village in the North East have succumbed to the virus. A lad I went to school with and our lovely long standing lollipop lady's husband. It's running through our village like the fucking plague. We are a bit behind the curve up here. Open up the beach toilets, the shops and the schools they say. Get the economy back on track. Fuck you Boris. And I don't know how DC can look himself in the face normally, but after that shit show last night he should be ashamed. But the elite narcissists don't feel shame. Or guilt. Or remorse.

Butterymuffin · 26/05/2020 15:49

Anyone else find it unusual that they got an ambulance for a child being sick? Ok he was distressed and had a temperature. But surely that's normal when vomiting. And people were not getting ambulance support unless lips were blue.

Yes @itsgettingweird I'd thought exactly this too. Of course we all worry about our kids and it's a worrying time BUT it sounded like a pretty standard childhood illness. The kind we've all got through with Calpol, staying with them through the night, cleaning them up and stripping the bed after they've been sick and so on. This doesn't seem to be the kind of parenting Cummings and Wakefield do. Instead they panic, decide they / their child is a special exception to the norm, and drive 4 hours across the country / call an ambulance.

PurplePansy05 · 26/05/2020 15:56

Slightly off-topic, but an interesting one from Sky News today:

news.sky.com/story/coronavirus-cheltenham-festival-and-liverpool-v-atletico-madrid-led-to-spike-in-covid-19-deaths-11994875

I guess what we've all suspected for a long time. How sad and shows the incompetence and utter disregard this government has for the people.

Roussette · 26/05/2020 15:58

I don't doubt he had the ambulance because of who he is. If the Father is ringing Police about security issues, they, as a family, are getting special treatment.

What I don't get about yesterdays garden interview. He's obviously an intelligent bloke, OK he's not used to talking to the Press fair enough, but he must be used to getting his point across in SAGE meetings and many other situations.
He did so badly.
I could've written a far better statement I feel, and answered the questions in a far more humble way whilst not prostrating myself in the rose bushes for the benefit of the Press.

One 'I apologise' or 'I'm sorry, I was so worried about my son and wife that I admit now I made a wrong decision and I can see how it looks to everyone out there who has been making the right decisions' and he might have managed to de-escalate the situation.

I can't believe some of these people are so so useless at this sort of thing.

But to me... when he was talking about rushing back to London, it was obvious that he does consider himself special, that he doesn't think the rules should necessarily apply to him because he's very important...
What did he expect?
If he just could have managed a smidgeon of humility, he might have pulled it off

PurplePansy05 · 26/05/2020 15:59

Going back to their parenting ways, at the same time they do not hesitate to put the child in a car for a 4/5 hour journey with at least one parent with suspected covid.

CarolynMartens · 26/05/2020 16:13

If no-one knew he was there, why the need for security? Clearly he doesn’t have security normally at his London house either otherwise he wouldn’t have been worried about attacks? If he does have security then he would have sorted it rather than his father?

YogaLite · 26/05/2020 16:20

There is an article on BBC website that describes his career, calls him ruthless and a Leninist in his philosophy by basically saying he works by throwing proverbial grenade to challenge establishment.

Also, that he genuinely doesn't care and he would only walk out if his advice is ignored.

If he is let off the hook now, there is bound to be a next "grenade"Confused

itsgettingweird · 26/05/2020 16:26

Perhaps they should send him to Coventry (in the silence sense not the place - he's already travelled enough).

Then perhaps he'll flounce!

itsgettingweird · 26/05/2020 16:27

Who is doing today's briefing?

peridito · 26/05/2020 16:32

I think he's a person with a range of conflicting qualties , being clever and machiavellian are only two .

I think if you work 23 hours a day and are high on the adrenalin of being at the centre of a political crisis you will loose touch with reality and how to balance priorities .

I think he panicked when his wife phoned him ,that clip of him sprinting from Downing Street after Boris was dx has stayed in my mind . He was rushing home .

Roussette is right

One 'I apologise' or 'I'm sorry, I was so worried about my son and wife that I admit now I made a wrong decision and I can see how it looks to everyone out there who has been making the right decisions' and he might have managed to de-escalate the situation

and thank you Roussette for the link to his wife's Spectator article .

ButteryPuffin · 26/05/2020 16:36

Think it's Hancock. Is it at 5?

SouthWestmom · 26/05/2020 16:41

My MP just tweeted her support for him. So disappointed.

HeIenaDove · 26/05/2020 16:45

MP Miriam Coates speaking in support of Cummings on BBC now.

Journalist not letting her off the hook though.

If we end up with another spike later this year would the public co operate with a Christmas lockdown.

Roussette · 26/05/2020 16:47

Oh good. Little Matty Hancock.
He's always so earnest and needs to be put through the wringer

Thank you Marina Hyde.

Who is your MP Noeuf? Do sympathise...send her the link!

itsgettingweird · 26/05/2020 16:49

Helena it's interviews with supporter like her which is where I struggle. She said "4 excuses". So they were excuses. And one was to get childcare.

But it wasn't. You could leave home to provide care to someone vulnerable. And Cummings himself has said it was in case he needed childcare - not because he needed it and then added yesterday also because if threats. Which afaik haven't ever been reported and that hasn't been corroborated as truth.

They are defending him using their words and not his.

itsgettingweird · 26/05/2020 16:55

I missed the begging of the chem teachers interview. What date did he say he saw Cummings? Was this the guy who originally said the 19th? Or did this guy always say Easter Sunday at Barnard castle and someone else said 19th.

And who apparently witnessed him in Durham on May 10th?

TruthTwisters · 26/05/2020 16:56

It's Matt Scapegoat in the firing line today...

Grant Shapps is breathing a sigh of relief. Grin

TruthTwisters · 26/05/2020 16:58

More like Grant Misshaps 😂

HeIenaDove · 26/05/2020 16:58

I missed the beginning of that too. Might look for that on i player later.

Laaf80 · 26/05/2020 17:00

I’m puzzled by why they have the ambulance information too.

Did they preempt a further sighting? Were they trying to garner sympathy?

Either way, this doesn’t look as if it going away.

Laaf80 · 26/05/2020 17:02

Also, that statement was clearly expertly written and tied to match the rumours/facts.

So why the hell did they give the Specsavers excuse? Surely a better excuse for Barnard’s Castle could have been given? Why provide something that can be easily criticised?

Was that an attempt to derail the narrative?

ButteryPuffin · 26/05/2020 17:04

Hancock accompanied by John Newton, test and trace coordinator. No sign of any medics. Camera angle just shows Hancock.

GrimmsFairytales · 26/05/2020 17:07

Did they preempt a further sighting?

Considering the rest of the statement was written around the sightings that already had proof, I guess this was the reason for including the hospital trip.

Funny how MW made no mention of it in her article.

If they had nothing to hide, why only mention it now. The obvious answer is they were worried it would be leaked, and so like Bernard Castle, and bluebell woods it had to be mentioned.
