Just listening to the briefing. So pretty much all back to normal on the 15th apart from education? Does he really think people are going to docilely distance still??

We have loads of people round here leaving boxes of old books outside their houses to take for free. Mostly crap, but it's always worth looking.
I never understood the school is not childcare mantra. It was a teacher friend who first said it to me when mine started school. She worked 2 days a week and her husband worked term time only..
School obviously has a dual function, as education and as somewhere to leave your kids while you work. When they brought in free and mandatory schools for the children of the working class it didn't have nothing to do with the fact that they had recently stopped children working full time. They had to be coralled somewhere while their parents worked!
It's not like our children go off to school and we think "ooh, I'm a bit bored now, I think i'll fill my day with a spot of screwing caps on toothpaste just for something to do"

nuttymomma · 26/05/2020 10:30

Come August, we will all be back to normal and the new normal that everyone spoke of won't actually happen.

The big shops can install screens and implement social distancing but it will soon be relaxed and everyone can enter as normal with no more queuing. No one will bother with it and the shops will give up.

The smaller shops can't do it, they might tell staff to wash their hands a bit more, but that's all.

Offices will have a few bottles of hand sanitiser that everyone will soon forget to do and no one will bother reminding them in a few months.

Its a fucking joke.

peoplepleaser1 · 26/05/2020 14:22

@nuttymomma some very unfair generalisations there. Small shop owners that I know will be implementing relevant procedures and are taking it very seriously.

Until or unless the risks of covid 19 are drastically reduced I'll be sticking to shops where sensible precautions are clearly being taken and everyone I know feels the same.

covetingthepreciousthings · 26/05/2020 15:34

I agree, the ones I know are taking it seriously and already put the sneeze guards up and stickers on the floors ready etc.

Carlislemumof4 · 26/05/2020 16:52

I agree with @nuttymomma about queuing systems for smaller/any non food shops.

Will stress I'm happy to queue. Was thinking yesterday about our city centre reopening though and how long it would take to get round just a few shops if you have to queue outside every one, waiting for browsing customers. I reckon people will quickly get fed up of that. Very different to joining one queue for the supermarket, rushing round for essentials, then home.

I am looking forward to local book shops reopening, won't rush straight there though.

purplebunny2012 · 26/05/2020 18:07

Knock yourselves out. You won't find me out shopping any time soon

CountessFrog · 26/05/2020 18:10

I’m going to Cornwall in August and I’m going to spray my hands and wear a mask!

leckford · 26/05/2020 18:12

My local independent shops will be please, so I will go and buy something!

DahliaDay · 26/05/2020 18:17

Our store has been open for weeks....essential retailer

Can promise you social distancing and all care around the spread of covid has gone out the window!! Stores put things in place, but customers no longer give a rats arse

userxx · 26/05/2020 18:19

@purplebunny2012 Excellent, one less person in front of me 👍.

Can't wait for the shops to open, let's hope the pubs aren't far behind.

vanillandhoney · 26/05/2020 18:22

I have friends in Portugal and it's pretty much back to normal there from the photos she posts online. No social distancing, crowds at the beach etc.

I imagine it will go back to normal much quicker than people think.

Pliudev · 26/05/2020 18:30

I agree with the person who said that, by August, things will be mostly back to normal. Unless there is a second wave and that seems quite likely. For those like me, late sixties, type 2 diabetic, I don't think life will ever be normal again. Call me a pessimist but is the new normal as you reach mid sixties to be about isolation? It feels that way. I hope for everyone else that things open soon and you can live your lives without fear. That's how it should be.

schooba · 26/05/2020 18:32

Thank God

LuckyLuckyWoman · 26/05/2020 18:37

Some Matalan stores are already open. The rest in England will be open before the weekend.

beingmum39 · 26/05/2020 19:23

I won't be shopping anytime soon. There will be queues outside, you can't try on clothes. I read the Waterstones book shop will quarantine every book that is touched but not purchased.. so sounds like staff will be following you around (whilst maintaining social distancing)

Celestine70 · 26/05/2020 19:42

I have no interest in going anywhere I don't have to. Certainly won't be going to any shops.

Skybluepink123 · 26/05/2020 19:49

I went to a shop today for a click and collect. Two weeks ago, using the same service, the customer waited outside the shop and the items were brought out. I expected the same today but instead the click and collect was right at the back of shop on the first floor. It was the furthest point possible and meant that I had to meander round lots of other people who couldn’t or wouldn’t observe the 2 metre rule nor the arrows on the floor encouraging one way traffic! People will forget very quickly what measures we need to take and I do worry about the potential risk to health.

DahliaDay · 26/05/2020 20:14

But why should the staff have to walk in and out of the store all the time for a click and collect outside?

You want ( need?) the product then the risk is yours

userxx · 26/05/2020 20:22

@DahliaDay Totally agree, bet that was a nightmare for the staff. I'm more than happy to meander around.

skodadoda · 26/05/2020 20:48

The virus is spread mostly in families
Heard this on the news tonight; it does seem to make sense - nonetheless very frustrating

Pawsandnoses · 26/05/2020 21:07

They’ll get all primary back before summer this way, albeit part time (half days or half weeks per bubble)

DD isn't in a year group that can go back. They had been open to vulnerable and key worker parents though. All of last week they were sharing their plans for opening next week for the designated groups; until 6.30pm on Friday when they sent an email to say that the new guidance (for 1st June onwards) given meant that the setting was not going to be safe for either the children that already are attending or the new groups. They therefore will be closing to all children on Friday. Duplicates of this letter were also sent out by other schools in the LA.

Skybluepink123 · 26/05/2020 21:59

Dahlia I don’t have a problem going into the shop but if we’re all supposed to be observing 2 metre distance, one way traffic in the shop etc but people don’t, then how can we be reassured that it’s safe to ease the retail lockdown?

AdoreTheBeach · 26/05/2020 22:12

Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. I’m not planning any mega shopping trip

Home delivery or a cluck and collect almost at closing time. I’ve found going to a shop close to closing, they’re pretty empty of people. I’m certainly keeping my distance and I wear a mask. I know, I know, but I feel better.

DahliaDay · 26/05/2020 22:20

We can’t! Because the public are mainly selfish arses

It’s not up to staff to keep risking traipsing in and out with click and collect orders. If you are feeling underage in store then maybe it’s time to re evaluate the importance of your purchase or get it delivered

Not rely on over exposed retail staff to do it

nuttymomma · 26/05/2020 22:21

@DahliaDay

That's what I'm talking about. People won't bother their arses after a few months and shops will give up trying.
