Just listening to the briefing. So pretty much all back to normal on the 15th apart from education? Does he really think people are going to docilely distance still??

I don't think anything will change. I doubt schools will go back or shops,will reopen. Just been on fb and seen the hoards,of people at the beaches. So either the infection and death rate will shoot back up so we still won't be able to ease restrictions or see family. Or the rate won't (seems highly unlikely)and it will be pointless to continue social distancing. Unfortunately I think it will be the first option.

Pixxie7 · 25/05/2020 22:42

I don’t know if I am being naive but I just don’t get the logic. People are being encouraged to go back to work, go shopping, return to school yet families can’t see each other.

WotsitWiggle · 25/05/2020 22:44

Could secondary age look after themselves?

DD is 12, in year 7. No way could I leave her for a full day at home on her own whilst I go to work, especially if she's meant to be doing schoolwork as well! Left to her own devices, she'd stay in bed on youtube all day.

Luckily I can work from home, so this hopefully won't be a dilemma I need to address, but it's wrong to assume all secondary age children can take care of themselves for 8+ hours a day, every day, for weeks on end.

FourTeaFallOut · 25/05/2020 22:49

Could secondary age look after themselves?

In the same way teachers cannot just leave books lying around the school and take the day off, leaving children home alone to get on with school work won't work for most teenagers.

StatisticalSense · 25/05/2020 22:49

@Pixxie7
Your employer won't go bust if you don't see your family but is likely to if you can't work and customers cannot obtain their product or service. Keeping the economy functioning is much more important to society than seeing family members ever will be and therefore it is perfectly logical to prioritise measures that protect the economy when evaluating which restrictions to relax.

lilgreen · 25/05/2020 22:50

The 15/6 announcement was a distraction promise to get us to forget about the inconvenience of Mr Cummings. They’ll announce it properly nearer the time.

peoplepleaser1 · 25/05/2020 22:52

@Pixxie7 I do understand your point but to many people getting shops open means they can work and businesses have a chance of not folding. I'd love to be able to see my family but the need to work for me is more vital than this right now.

StatisticalSense · 25/05/2020 22:55

@FourTeaFallOut
The idea that teenagers need to do their school work between 9 and 3 Monday to Friday has gone out of their window in most cases, unless their is live online teaching and in such cases the school can take a register enforce attendance through their usual measures. It really doesn't matter if they are watching youtube for much of the day and doing their school work when their parents are home in the evening and many may well choose to do their work in the day if they knew their parents were going to force them to do it in the evening if it hadn't been done.

Pixxie7 · 25/05/2020 22:56

Thank you for your replies and I get what your saying, I just think there is a group of forgotten people.

thismeansnothing · 25/05/2020 22:57

The other week didn't Boris say shops etc opening was dependent and the R rate staying below 1?? What if it doesn't or creeps up? Or if there's a second wave? Will we be told or will it be swept under the carpet so people can still shop? Just been catching up on all the news and it hasn't even been mentioned ?!!!

peoplepleaser1 · 25/05/2020 22:59

@thismeansnothing as far as I understand all the 'unlocking' measures are dependent on the 5 measures being met and R being under control.

PasserbyEffect · 25/05/2020 23:00

Keeping the economy functioning is much more important to society than seeing family members ever will be

So... "There's no such thing as family. There are individual men and women and there is society"? Confused
Somehow Thatcher's version sounded less fascist.

Pomegranatepompom · 25/05/2020 23:01

@Pixxie7 We are much more likely to get/pass on the virus if we have contact with relatives than if we have a brief contact with someone in a shop.

DoctorHildegardLanstrom · 25/05/2020 23:10

@flopseyR72

The company that I use to work for, sent out messages to all staff about whether the shops that they had closed (some stayed open) to get ready for opening on June 1st, other shops are to stay close till July.

The problem being is that alot of staff are parents and if they cannot work, they will have to take unpaid leave or quit. If they quit they can't claim benefits for 3 months, which is putting the staff in an awkward position at the moment and I am not sure the company really gives a shit, as I assume they know in a few months time, people are going to be beating down their door for jobs.

Legoandloldolls · 25/05/2020 23:14

I cant wait to go out primark. But I have managed to get everything we desperately needed from super markets.

I'm going to leave shops for a while until I know how long the queues are. I doubt it's going to be much fun when they reopen so unless I'm desperate I'm not keen to rush out

Skybluepink123 · 25/05/2020 23:15

Where or when will we here from the scientists about the 5 conditions being met before lockdown measures are eased significantly? BJ just suddenly announced considerable easing of lockdown but there was, IIRC, no real explanation of how the 5 conditions will be monitored. I have 3 children who all have shielding letters. This easing of lockdown has me concerned, particularly when there doesn’t seem to be scientific support.

SistemaAddict · 25/05/2020 23:25

@user1497207191 it's not my mum that's shielded, it's me.

They tell us how they are doing with the five tests every night.

How many hospital beds are empty on the inforgraphic, deaths and infection numbers are faking in a sustained way, they tell us the R number. I think they've even told us they've recruited 20k test track and trace staff and they are starting to use the system.

HepzibahGreen · 25/05/2020 23:33

It very much matters to me if my dc are on you tube all day!
Also, It's one thing leaving an 11 year old for an hour or two after school, waiting for you to get back from work. It's not on to expect them to be alone 8-6 5 days a week. For some children, especially only children, that would be really weird and lonely. And other children with siblings would fight! Kids are not suddenly grown up at 11.
And not all kids live in nice areas-my cousin's house was burgled one afternoon by junkies looking for stuff to sell. I'd be nervous to leave dc for hours and hours tbh.

WhentheRabbitsWentWild · 25/05/2020 23:44

@StarintheMorning

I personally can't wait for the charity shops to open . Want some more books as read most of them now during lockdown .

feelingverylazytoday · 26/05/2020 07:45

Yes, I desperately want charity shops to open. I need a new telly, don't want to pay for a new one, and there's three just sitting there.

Raaaa · 26/05/2020 07:46

Whatever happened to the "school is not childcare" dogma so trite on mumsnet before covid kicked off??

As someone said family and friends would be the childcare if needed but that's not allowed and yes school is childcare in a sense to most people as they need to work to live.

alreadytaken · 26/05/2020 08:03

check your local facebook pages People are swapping books and jigsaws and if there is someone from a charity shop on there they might agree to a physically distanced collection. Businesses can sell online after all Smile

homemadecommunistrussia · 26/05/2020 09:10

Your library is probably offering an enhanced digital service too.

SistemaAddict · 26/05/2020 09:33

Our library uses the BorrowBox app for digital books. It's great. I've bought my mum books from eBay as she can't do online reading on her tiny screen and she's a bit of a technophobe.
