Just listening to the briefing. So pretty much all back to normal on the 15th apart from education? Does he really think people are going to docilely distance still??

statisticalsense do you believe a 4yo travelled 250 miles without a loo stop? If you know how to achieve this you could make a fortune advising other parents.

flopseyR72 · 25/05/2020 21:36

I would be interested to know if anyone working in retail know if the companies are actually going to open on 15 June. Just because they can doesn’t mean they will while staff are still on furlough etc

Destroyer · 25/05/2020 21:36

Whatever happened to the "school is not childcare" dogma so trite on mumsnet before covid kicked off??

Before all this, friends and family would become the childcare - now that’s not allowed. That’s what the difference is.

FurForksSake · 25/05/2020 21:37

Which is why I wrote no care "at all". Other age groups will be in for some hours each/ most day(s) and so staff could be part unfurloughed and work a shorter shift. It's not perfect, but nothing is going to be.

FurForksSake · 25/05/2020 21:39

Companies are soon going to be expected to pick up part of the furlough bill, they will want staff back and stores making money.

Millicent10 · 25/05/2020 21:42

I will be shopping for shoes for 12 & 15 year old boys, surprising how quickly they grow in a couple of months. I wonder what restrictions there will be, will they be able to try on shoes? Will I even be able to take them or will it only be one single adult only as per my local supermarket?

thisenglishlife · 25/05/2020 21:42

@thisenglishlife wrong thread
Was replying to that very comment that was in this thread

Discobar · 25/05/2020 21:43

@furforkssake - many companies will not be able to get up to speed revenue wise anywhere near quick enough to get majority of staff back from furlough. It will be the managers/assistant managers/supervisors being worked to the bone

Oops sorry Grin

iwishiwasonhol · 25/05/2020 21:54

if they are going to open shops, then they need to start putting more public transport on ,as someone who doesn't drive, but works in a supermarket with an hourly bus service rather than the normal 4 buses an hour service and with them only allowing 11 people on a single decker,i have been late twice in the last week as I have to walk the 45mins in after being turned away as the bus is full

MeadowHay · 25/05/2020 21:56

We will be getting DD's feet measured and shoe shopping for her as soon as we can, she's about to turn 2 and we are struggling on that front. We normally go together as she always gets upset and then do other shopping in the retail park while we are there, we don't drive so get the bus. I'm thinking shops will only allow 1 adult to supervise a child and public transport use will still be heavily discoueaged. So I guess only one of us will be able to take her and not do any extra shopping. I do wonder about public transport, vast swathes of the public don't drive and to go shopping we will need to get buses, I don't know how that's going to work especially people like us with prams when you're meant to be socially distancing. Taking DD shoe shopping is the only thing I can think of when we'd need to get a bus with her, but other people might need to get a bus to go clothes shopping for example. And just in general if people are fed up and go shopping/out more to occupy themselves, presumably public transport will start to get much busier, outside of peak times as people will go in the afternoons etc people who are on furlough or teenagers not in school etc?

MeadowHay · 25/05/2020 21:56

Ah we cross posted a bit wish!

thisenglishlife · 25/05/2020 22:00

I suppose the shops will have to open sometime soon, many won't be able to survive for very long.

Echobelly · 25/05/2020 22:01

Just thinking, if schools do go back with everyone in September, uniform shops will be 'essential'. No way will either of my kids fit all their uniform they ended the school year with. Our local one is usually a madhouse in summer, so I presume they will be purely click and collect.

BigChocFrenzy · 25/05/2020 22:10

After Cummings & Goings, the government had to relax lockdown pretty quickly, whatever the science

Or there'd be a bloody Peasants Revolt

Justanotherlurker · 25/05/2020 22:13

After Cummings & Goings, the government had to relax lockdown pretty quickly, whatever the science

A more realistic response is that around the 1'st of June has always been a target to ease lock down.

Trying to spin this into a cummings argument shows your RG degree didn't contain any kind of 'critical thinking'

peoplepleaser1 · 25/05/2020 22:15

My husband is a director of a retail store. Obviously no one wants shops to open if it's unsafe but please bear in mind that generally retail workers cannot wfh so their income relies on shops reopening.

His company have invested huge amounts of time and money on making adjustments which will make shopping as safe as possible for both staff and customers. They haven't yet received government guidance as to what measures are required, so everything remains flexible.

It's unfair to say it's all about tax. It's also about getting people back to work, saving businesses and livelihoods. Yes the two are linked but it's not just about tax.

Admittedly there is an issue for working parents whose children can't go to school but many workers aren't affected by this and you cannot put an entire industry on hold because a proportion of employees have no childcare.

It's very hard to say whether people will actually want to go shopping. In the case of my husbands store he is very lucky as he has huge numbers of customers waiting to shop with them (all will be issued appointments ASAP), but some stores will not be so lucky which is a huge worry.

CallmeAngelina · 25/05/2020 22:16

Education is meant to be back to normal by the 15th.

Where on earth did you get that idea from? It certainly won't be.

alreadytaken · 25/05/2020 22:18

well my attitude to this is different. I was ready to go on a spending spree to help rebuild the economy - but if they think I'm going to be a good little consumer after that disgraceful press conference they have another think coming.

bananaskinsnomnom · 25/05/2020 22:20

@Discobar I agree but some shops will be quicker than others - I know Mumsnet doesn’t represent the nation but I think clothes shops will do well fairly quick, if you look on here at how many people need new clothes and shoes for their children - plus themselves, me and my friends were saying the other day how much summer stuff we could do with, basics like vest tops, flip flops.....funnily enough no one needs swimwear this year but nearly everyone who I speak to (in a close way) have had a clear out of their underwear too Grin

Other shops (thinking of my high street) not so much - Card shops I can see taking a while, independent gift shops could take time, electrical shops possibly as a lot of people have lost income and this won’t be the time to update iPads etc.
Home stores, for furniture etc, I could see getting off to a positive start potentially where people who have had weeks off have redecorated etc - or the flip of that, like electrical, people won’t be able to afford the big stuff yet.....

I’m happy to give the local eye brow threading lady my business (wearing a mask) when she’s allowed to reopen. I’m not looking good.....

@Echobelly school uniform madness dash could save a lot of shops!

bananaskinsnomnom · 25/05/2020 22:23

@cantkeepawayforever I agree! Mine won’t fit all year groups in full time under the current measures and class sizes - even with the plans of using the hall, the library, the computer room, dining hall etc (and I know as an independent we are lucky to have these extra rooms)

In that case it could lead to what I fear.....scrapping the 15 and the spacing. Whole class bubbles. If that’s not in place in summer, I’m willing to bet it will be by September.

Voice0fReason · 25/05/2020 22:26

I won't be going shopping any time soon.
The virus is still out there, it will still spread.
I hope shops put sensible measures in place to mitigate the risk.

Echobelly · 25/05/2020 22:34

I've said to DH that if flower shop at the top of our street (corner of high st) opens then as long as we're working we ought to buy a bouquet each week. Don't use them often as they're not cheap, but given the high street is filled with bookies and charity shops we're very fortunate to have something nicer on our street corner and should make efforts to support it.
