Just listening to the briefing. So pretty much all back to normal on the 15th apart from education? Does he really think people are going to docilely distance still??

They will open on the 1st, I agree - they have re-written the 5 tests since they were announced, to make it look as if we meet them.

However, all year groups in for a month? No. With secondary having been pushed back 2 weeks, I can't see the rest of primary being for more than a couple of weeks part time, if that.

highmarkingsnowbile · 25/05/2020 20:37

cant, you didn't need the government to dictate that to you, you are perfectly capable of puzzling that out on your own.

FourTeaFallOut · 25/05/2020 20:37

Or, you could just have your family around to meet in your garden and keep a two meter distance the same as Una car park and better than a shop. I have a chhhiiiillllddd - it's my instincts.

GreyGardens88 · 25/05/2020 20:38

If you can go to Primark from 15th June would IBU to take a train to see my parents

sexbearhouse · 25/05/2020 20:39

This is just intended as a distraction to stop everyone asking uncomfortable questions about the crock of shite they want us to swallow about Cummings.

A lot of shops won't be able to open because they won't be able to ensure Social Distancing. So I guess those staff will still be on furlough until end Oct. At which point we are due second wave.

SistemaAddict · 25/05/2020 20:40

No breakfast or after school club this term at our primary school so grandparents will be very busy. Or rather more busy than usual.

OhTheRoses · 25/05/2020 20:41

No. You wouldn't. The economy is going to hell in a handcart. I thought shops were opening on 1st June. Why aren't they. What is the explanation. What is going on that we haven't been told.

ky07 · 25/05/2020 20:42

I'm pretty sure its higher risk wandering around crowded shops than visiting select family, but fuck logic.

Tanfastic · 25/05/2020 20:44

I assume social distancing will be in place in shops, so massive queues outside. Shopping will be hideous. Can you imagine the queue to get in Primark. I'll pass thanks. All I'm interested in is when I can see extended family and my give my mum a hug.

MyKingdomforaNameChange · 25/05/2020 20:46

Outdoor Markets and car showrooms on the 1st June. It was always going to be a phased reopening.

VenusTiger · 25/05/2020 20:46

Good grief - common sense where have you gone?

If you're over 70 and/or vulnerable, you're not exactly going to go swanning off to the shops are you, until you're advised/guided to do so - therefore, yes, going to a shopping centre if you're not showing signs of the virus will be allowed after 15 June, but not going to visit elderly relatives is still going to be the case, because they were asked to isolate for longer from the very beginning.

Eckhart · 25/05/2020 20:48

I think other changes will be announced before 15 June that will make this easier than it looks from here.

They really do seem to be making the announcements in the most anxiety provoking way possible.

BeijingBikini · 25/05/2020 20:48

YES - I will be first in the queue at TK Maxx

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 25/05/2020 20:50

but not going to visit elderly relatives is still going to be the case

It’s visiting any relative, not just the elderly and/or vulnerable

jugglingbeans · 25/05/2020 20:50

You'd hope so wouldn't you? I was not impressed (and told her so) that my 80+ vulnerable mum decided to go to the shops today to buy a new landline phone. She didn't need one, she just felt like it.

PurplePansy05 · 25/05/2020 20:50

But who will shop there if hardly any office workers are back? This move will prove unsustainable in a matter of weeks.

CountessFrog · 25/05/2020 20:51

They do need to do something to prevent queuing outside shops, it’s hideous.

I do it outside the supermarket because I need food, I’m not prepared to queue outside department stores, ill shop online.

HatRack · 25/05/2020 20:52

Whatever happened to the "school is not childcare" dogma so trite on mumsnet before covid kicked off??

Echobelly · 25/05/2020 20:53

I don't see why local high street shops shouldn't open - though malls and anywhere that would attract people from a wide area wouldn't be a good idea. You don't often see more than 2 customers at a time in our local flower, photo or bed shop, and no one's hanging about in them for ages, so I'd say let them open if the owners are happy to.

We can't resist every single change and on balance, local shops are a low-risk - they won't be crowded or have people lingering in them. Infection has dropped even with supermarkets and essential shops open, local non-essential shops are not going to up the risk meaningfully.

Pomegranatepompom · 25/05/2020 20:56

PIL are over 70, we won’t visit them despite what DC has done. I don’t understand why people think this is a green light that makes vulnerable people suddenly immune.

If you choose to visit relatives that should be shielding, you will be increasing their risk.
If you choose to get a train for non essential travel, you are increasing the risk for everyone on that train.
Spending time with relatives increases your chance of having a high viral load, minutes in a supermarket doesn’t.

cologne4711 · 25/05/2020 20:56

I just won't queue, I am fortunate that I can walk into town inside 10 minutes so I walk in and if all three shops have queues I just come home again. Yesterday I was really lucky, walked straight into Waitrose, wasn't in there very long though I had to queue briefly to pay, came out and there was the longest queue I'd seen outside!

It's time they got libraries open too even if they just open for computer use and to collect reservations. Have they redeployed library staff to contact tracing or are they furloughed?

Lovemusic33 · 25/05/2020 20:58

I won’t be going to any shop unless it’s something I can’t buy online. The shops being shut has saved me a fortune. I would rather shop from home and not risk being around others. I’m sure social distancing will be in place and I don’t fancy queuing outside primark on a hot summers day.

Twospaniels · 25/05/2020 20:58

I’ve had emails from a couple of local independent non essential shops saying they are opening on 1 June. Do they now have to put that off til 15 June?

FurForksSake · 25/05/2020 20:59

I imagine shops won't be very busy to start with so will part unfurlough or leave some staff on furlough. Not every shop worker will be a parent.

I have no idea how things will work through the summer holidays with no information as to whether any of the sports or holiday clubs will run (assume not?).

But we have to start somewhere and get things going, gradually at first, look at R, move forward. Hopefully by September we will have learnt what we can do in a SD way and wraparound care will re-open. Also nurseries and childminders can re-open from 1st June, so only 7-10's with no care at all. Secondary age could conceivably be left.

Fiddlersgreen · 25/05/2020 21:00

@OhTheRoses it wasn’t 1st June for shops, I think they originally said 4th July for non essential shops?
