Why are the supermarket workers not getting sick?

So tell me this ...if supermarkets are a "danger zone" why aren't the supermarket workers all dying and getting sick with this "killer virus"?

Same as teachers before
Lockdown.... or teachers that have been in school throughout?

I know of a few who had it. One way seriously ill. HTH.

Some are, a local supermarket had to close briefly as there was an outbreak, but yes on the whole it seems low numbers affected.

I suspect because most people with symptoms are self isolating. I think the real danger is for medical staff and carers, and possibly school staff because children don’t always appear to show the symptoms.

I’m sure some supermarket staff have caught it, but most places are being very careful about hygiene.

Oh do you know the occupation of everyone who has contracted the virus then?

They are I'd imagine but perhaps now most shops have put screens up and they is less footfall they are now at less danger of catching it.

The pinch point for them would have been when we were all panic buying and cramming into the shop with no controls.

Most school staff who I know (the ones in round here seem to be TAs) have had the virus. The teachers are working from home, planning and delivering online lessons.

And at a google by the 11th May 65 school staff have died of Covid.

I sure they are but one of the main risk factors is length of time spent with an infected person and I don't think supermarket workers spend a long time with the customers ( other staff, that I don't know)

There is a list of occupations and virus cases which was published last week. Hairdressers and dental nurses are particularly at risk.

It’s not definitive as the problem is it is not clear if the person caught the virus while at work.

Op, you’re right, the infection rates are very low, school staff, delivery drivers, cleaners, warehouse staff, many many places still operational..

They spent months before covid was on the radar, with people. They will have all had it no doubt.

Because only those that die or have miraculous recoveries are reported. I imagine supermarket workers catch it, are ill and then get better. Nothing like dramatic enough for the media to report!

The vast majority of people who die of Covid are over 65. Supermarket staff tend to be younger. In my local I'd be surprised if any of them are over 30. I imagine many of the staff have had a mild form of the illness.

Why would stores have to close because anyone caught covid though? That's not how it works. Lots of supermarket staff have contracted it, it also there are shitloads of protective measures in place now and have been for weeks. That's helping.

My neighbour is a supermarket worker, hospitalised with it.

Loads of them have had it they've just all recovered my husbands shop 75% of their workforce came down with it all recovered. My local supermarket a lot of them had it they've all recovered. But they have sanitisers people keep their distance and they have masks and stuff there fine.
It's actually been so helpful him working in one when all this was tits up we never run out of food or hand sanitiser because they get first dibs on it all.

Because it isn't a headline grabber like HCP, bus drivers ect getting sick even when they are proportional and not over represented.

Some people matter more than others to the news.

I think OP means why aren't they coming down in large enough numbers to have caused a specific outcry, like there have been for other frontline professions. There have been several specific reports on the numbers of carers who have died, and in London, the number of bus drivers. You'd expect supermarket workers to be in a similar risk category.

And to be honest everyone of them that caught it was before lockdown. Lockdown came to late I think for London. Touch wood I don't know anyone or have heard of anyone getting it lately. April/March was when it was really rough
