Year 10 & 12

Anyone heard about their year 10 or 12 children going in after 1st June?

My year 10 is not worried either way, I am concerned about GCSE's etc next year.

I have seen many Primary school discussions but less about Secondary .

Had one email the day after t announcement saying the school and unions were working hard behind the scenes to decide on the safest and best way forward.
Nothing since.

Had a lot of communication from primary school though

Government haven’t released their Secondary guidance yet, only Primary. Frustrating having to wait for it.

My school have plans in place but the guidance should only be out by Friday, giving us exactly no working days to implement it if they say we should be in from 1st June. Going by how many times the primary guidance has been changed we will probably have to scrap what we have and start again! And what we have in place depends on getting plumbers in to fix the sinks.

I think most secondary schools have draft plans but are reluctant to share them with parents before the government releases the guidance in case they are completely at odds with each other and they need to change the plans. Not sure why the government are taking so long to release the guidance, you'd have hoped it was a priority...

Astounding that there is no guidance out yet, it makes me wonder whether they were waiting to see the response from Primary schools

I’ve had contact from the year 10 head teacher - she is putting plans in place for 1st June.
Year 12 I’ve had a text asking if I plan to send him. He’s at a different school and they are looking to reopen from 8th June.

As secondary schools haven't had any guidance from the government yet it makes it different for heads to do anything. Until that comes schools are planning but not much they can do.

e.g. lots of primaries planned initially for a rota then were told 2 days later that they couldn't do that.

Ds1 is in yr12, at an academy and have been asked if he wishes to return June 8th. He says he wants to go back.

Our school is gearing up and will use the half term to get things in place. Kids are getting almost full day online learning now but keen to get these years back in the classrooms. They sent a comprehensive survey out to parents and they are due to email us tomorrow about how this may work.
Y12 parents panicking about amount of university deferrals reported especially in light that some universities will only do online learning next year. I wouldn't pay for that. Which has a knock on affect on next years Y13s as there will potentially be many more students competing for places.

They will be making tentative plans, but in the absence of further guidance from the DfE, 11 days after the Prime Minister said there might be "some face to face" for those year groups, many schools will be waiting before finalising their plans.

So, to recap: Johnson made his big speech a week and a half ago and guidance for secondaries still isn't out. Wtf are they doing down the DfE?

I am wondering whether an email asking if there are any plans may be an idea- I really do not mind but just want to know!

Our school sent us a form to fill in to find out how many yr 10 and 12 pupils would be prepared to go back on 1st June. DS is desperate to go in.

My dd is year 10. I emailed her head of year at the end of last week, they're planning for them to go back in some form in the last week of June. She said there are different ideas being discussed but nothing definite yet.

Ds2's school emailed to say that they were planning to take those that hadn't done well with the online teaching first, then those that were struggling with specific subjects. So Ds who was been good with his work won't get to go back by the looks of it 🤔 He really needs to get back to socialise if nothing else, he's lost all his sport which he would normally be busy with. Am waiting for further details before I email and moan!

My ds' college is not reopening until at least September, although they said they will try to do some face to face tutor sessions in early July.

@chickedeee exactly! I will email and voice my concerns, at the moment our council isn't keen on any schools going back.

We had an email today. Son in year 10. There will be the chance for going into school towards the end of June, probably. Need to do some thinking as he is actually getting on fine with online learning, and we live with my over 70s parents.

Your school is still unlikely to with no guidance from the government yet OP. Some schools will put out plans early, such as private schools but most won’t yet-especially when the Primary guidance changed after two days of the first one being released.

@Susiesue61they may not be going back for lessons. If you read some threads on here some students are going back just for a chat with their teachers on their own, not in groups.

The main issues with Secondary Schools are that you can't use the bubble plan that Primaries are where only one adult has contact with a bubble, students are in different sets and have different options so hard to split them up into consistent groups and transport as more students will use public/school transport to get to school than Primary school pupils.

DS's school has gone with the option that they are not opening up but carrying on with full timetable online learning, subject to review if things change in the next few weeks.

Also whereas it is thought that the transmission rate for under 10s can be low (although there are some reports that suggest otherwise) I don't think that follows for over 10s

I've got a child in year 12. We had a survey emailed out asking where we stand on a variety of things including transport options, preferred options for face to face contact, how important we think various elements of social distancing are etc. The accompanying letter made it clear that the bulk of tuition would still be remote and that no firm decisions had been made yet. The deadline for returning the survey was only yesterday so I am not anticipating any update until next week.
I've got very mixed feelings about it all. I am worried about the risk of a resurgence of cases as lockdown eases but I am also worried about my son's education. He is working hard but he is very quiet and shy and he finds it hard to approach the teachers for help. I think even a few short face to face conversations would help him if it can be done safely enough.
